protip: university of hawai'i community college campuses give you the same lower div credits for a fraction of the cost as the uni (double check transfer credits tho) plus it all shows up in your STAR and Laulima stuff UH Hilo and West O'ahu are great for different types (big island is a different vibe and west has smaller class sizes, more catered to working students + uses the rail) but west has no dorms and is a pretty dead campus
Its so upsetting, I actually attempted to look into doing a few credits at Kapiolani but the CC tuition was MORE than my manoa WUE tuition per credit!! Im pinning this comment though, because everyones situation is different and everyone should look into it for sure!
as an australian who found this in their reccomendation box but has no connection to the university of hawaii, i love this video!! :) ur so sweet and real
this was genuinely the most HELPFUL video I've ever seen, I'm committed and really was trying to find a real vid on what to expect. THANK YOU SOOOOO MUCH.
This is so funny because people want to go University of Hawaii at Manoa but everyone here in Hawaii consider it a school that you go to if you cant get into any colleges in the mainland.
Sorry about the cons of going to UH Manoa. I went there years ago, stayed in Hale Aloha dorms the first few years, ate at the dining hall, etc. I hope the situations get better for you. Glad that you chose to go to school here in Hawaii. Go Bows! 🌈🤙
A couple more things about the weather here. First, the weather on one part of the Island does not indicate what the weather is like in other parts of the Island. I used to live just outside of Waikiki. My wife's family lived in Mililani. We would make plans to go to the beach and they would call to ask if we should do something else because it was raining. I would look outside and it would be clear and sunny. If you have plans, check the weather where you are going - not where you are. Second, have you experienced rain while the sun is shining? I moved here from Pennsylvania just before I started high school (and came back after college in California). I'll never forget the first time I was out walking, it was bright and sunny, and it started raining. The rain was just a drizzle but it was so nice and cooling. At first I thought that someone had their sprinklers on but no, it was rain. It's a wonderful phenomenon.
I was just doing research at the university a few weeks ago! This is really informative, even for someone who isn't thinking of committing but loves the campus.
It's interesting comparing your experience with mine. I attended UH Manoa from 2011-2014 and stayed in Hale Kuahine. In comparison to the points you brought up: 1.) I had a hard time figuring out how to join student campus activities, but it was always very clear when school started and ended. That was on the academic calendar. 2.) I never really got cold in Hawaii, but I moved there from a colder part of the country. 3.) The bathrooms were co-ed when I was there too, but they were always pristine the entire three years that I lived there. 4.) I really liked the food at the two lower campus cafeterias and ate there everyday until they banned trays. I got really annoyed about not being able to easily carry all the tiny plates they insisted that everyone use instead of trays, so I started buying food off campus instead. 5.) As far as I know, everyone in my building had double rooms with the furniture for two people, but there was only one person assigned to each room, so I never actually had a roommate. That made it really convenient when my friends and parents visited from the mainland since they had a place to stay. 6.) I used the bus to get to and from the airport, but I otherwise found it very inconvenient to use. I walked and biked to get around. The furthest extent was walking to Aina Haina and Bishop Museum, respectively, and biking to Kaneohe and Kailua. I also hiked over the mountains from Manoa Falls to Judd Trail and then took the roads back. 7.) I agree on the storage. I accumulated lots of books while I was there since I didn't sell my textbooks between semesters and I also like to read. An inconvenience was needing to pack all my stuff into storage closets on other floors between semesters whenever I left to visit my parents and then packing it back into my room when I came back. My dorm building didn't have elevators, so it was difficult moving all my books up and down the stairs at the end and start of each semester. 8.) Socially, I found it difficult to meet people on campus, but there was a board game group that would meet sometimes in that little building near Hale Manoa (I forget its name) and there are hiking trails that lead from Dole Street up to Waʻahila Ridge, which I learned about from people in my dorm. It was fun to go hiking up there, but don't do it after it rains because the red mud will *really* stick to your feet and make your feet heavier with each step!
Kailua has rain all the time. Mountains shield Honolulu from the weekly rain. And longer your stay here, the more 60F (Winter Nighttime) feels like 30F.
I just moved to Hawaii about a month ago! I’m 19 and not currently taking any classes but I clicked anyways HAHA. Weirdly to me it’s kinda dry here! I came from south Texas though where it was like 90-100% humidity mostly. So I have been having to adjust to that. I just started working down in Waikiki at a restaurant so super excited to finally make friends. This video was honestly refreshing
heyy i just wanna say u are literally the most gorgeous human being and i have been binging your videos all day!! im not even looking at colleges rn but this video was so fun and you make this school look so so fun, so this school will def be in mind when i am looking!
right haha! You get so used to it, that when you’re back on the mainland that you kinda miss it too. Like what do you mean I don’t get 20 seconds of light rain right now to cool me down??
I work here and yes the bathrooms can get pretty nasty those stains on the ground is just old wax peeling tho the bathroom does get cleaned every day and sanitized
Yes, it never felt dirty. I always saw someone cleaning in the mornings (made sure to smile and say thank you), and never once did I feel gross in the bathrooms, despite how they may look.
Hi, I'm from Japan, since I love languages and visited Hawaii when I was a child, I'm thinking about going to a university there, it's a bit scary for me since it's an English-spesking country, and English isn't my first language, But it'll be a great experience, so i'll give it a try! and i wonder something, did you say the bus is free with student ID?
Ive lived in Hawaii all my life and im in between going to college at UH or going to NAU. Since ur from flagstaff what are your opinions on the college there?
Born and raised here on Oahu, not at all interested in schools here- hell, I was homeschooled all through middle school (I’m actually looking at going to high school on the mainland😂) but we always drove past the dorms, and I was quite curious if it was different from my past experiences with elementary and the first week of middle school lmao. School here ain’t the best when it comes to most things
that is an amazing quesiton. I believe I didn't ever submit an intent to enroll, I just payed my deposit/first tuition statement! You do all of that through myuh.hawaii.edu !
What, but bro, I stayed in Hale Lehua, and the food was great. Unlimited pizza and fries is my spirit animal. Although someone jacked my Bluetooth speaker from the roof, so lmk if you find a UE Megaboom somewhere.
Everyone has a did experience!! I’m just used to eating much different food, there was just not enough protein for me. If I still lived there i’d look for you in sorry you lost it!!
i go to highschool near uh manoa and for track we run around there and we even had our scioly state competition there. i will say, it is not worth the money unless you NEED a degree. the dorms look horrible, and the education just can;t match the other colleges
are power strips and stuff really not allowed ? i've heard a lot about it, but i didn't know for sure. also, i just got my dorm confirmation... and a checklist of orientation. do i do the online orientation on top of obviously my in person orientation and move in? how long were your thanksgiving and winter break? i'm sorry for the spam questions.
Don't be sorry about questions! I had a power strip, just make sure they have one of those on and off switches, the ones without those aren't allowed. Do the online orientation, as well as in-person. In-person is actually super boring and I ended up leaving halfway through it, just a heads up haha. Thanksgiving break was only thurs-sun so you dont get the whole week off. Christmas break was I believe de 18-jan 8 I believe!
hey i’m committed and im scared of getting in trouble for stuff like air fryer and appliances bc they said they aren’t allowed but like how strict is that really 😭
NOT STRICT at least this year! Not once did I get a room check, I made the whole hall smell like dinner every night and nobody ever came and checked on me. Just make sure you unplug all appliances after each use, then if they see it and say something you tell them "I just take it up to the roof". BOOM then its no problem :)
my dad was mad at me bc this video was more negative than he thought it should be, but I'm like, dad its just the truth haha. I love it, and am so thankful, but it isn't perfect whatsoever haha
I’m currently in Junior of high school in CA and I always wanted to go to Hawaii I wanna apply to ur college and UH Hilo! Seeing ur vlogs of Hawaii seems so fun and I wish I can enjoy my life like you do in Hawaii!! But what ur most favorite part of ur school in UH manoa or sports and if you can maybe put on ur next video how did you study for the SAT/ACT test and is ur college easy to got in or any tips to apply for other colleges?

@@IsabellaKayC yeah a lot of friends and family from out of state assume that’s where they’re supposed to stay but there are a lot of better places to stay outside of Waikiki. The Fungi pizza is on another level at brick fire. How’s your poke tastes?
Hawaii is spelled Hawaiʻi with an okina. And pronounced with an okina and a “v” sound :) make sure you are pronouncing and speaking it properly. This is another thing to know and be respectful of in Hawaiʻi
yes absolutely! It’s so hard for it to become vocabulary when you aren’t surrounded by it, being alone in my dorm room definitely puts me in default mode unfortunately haha. But yes, when referring to it to uncles/aunties it doesn’t slip my mind for sure 👍
