@@ANTONINJAPAN Hopefully not only shorts. I could watch touring your houses and watch renovation for hours. Since we've seen this old house (not as old as the house I live in Leipzig, Saxony, Germany) we've seen the potential it has and it turned out great, so much things you could save. So much work (and money). Shooji turned out most beautiful I think. how about a buddha statue or similar for the 床の間? I really like the choosen pinewood for the second floor, btw. And good to see that you used recycled wood, (I make upcycling videos myself), this is a great opportunity and way cheaper. I was happy to see the translations every now and then from Japanese, but as many of your worldwide viewers don't know all the words for all types of wood in English, it might help to fix the subtitles at least to help people to unserstand more. Looking forward to see more of the renovation. Cheers and enjoy your vacation.

I love how you brighten the whole house inside with your choice of pine wood for the wall, ganbatsu wood for the floor and see through sliding doors. This definitely made the house feel bigger and also warm. Placing the ganbatsu panels for the deck vertically towards the front door and then horizontally made the space outside feel much bigger and softens the way the outside living space feels in the city. I love the saved tiles in the wet room and shower rooms! The wood bath and color for walls complimented the tiles beautifully. I love the way you kept the ceiling height to open up the bedrooms. You kept the functioning beautiful pieces of the home, restored it and brought it up to date. A beautifully well done work!

Wow, the upstairs bedrooms look so cosy and inviting. Also love how the bathroom is divided into three sections so 3 people can use it at the same time when getting ready for the day. I would only add a small sofa if one can be fit in somewhere. North Americans love to plop down on a sofa/couch after being out for the day. Take care.

Your home is beautiful! Pine has been overused in US and usually has been associated with cheap, unsophisticated decor. This may be the reason you have gotten negative comments. I agree pine is beautiful and you have shown how versatile it can be.

It’s good to see that you try to save these old houses. I get the impression, that Japanese culture is more about tearing them down and putting up new buildings but I think ancient settlements really come alive by old houses being integrated with newer ones and it preserves a part of history. Especially when conserving the original character of the building and interior.

The people hating on the pine are just being snobby. Being fair there are a lot of hackneyed DIY projects across the USA that are honestly not well-made or somewhat less than safe. But pine is super strong for it's extremely light weight. Also, the older cabinets in the guest bedroom is really cute, and gives character and style. Nothing worse than going overseas for the culture, and staying in a room that is indistinguishable from a regular hotel in any US highway.

fyi, pine is one of the harder woods, its great for most outdoor and interior builds. Save for stain for weather proofing which takes time its easy to work with. A go to for most builders because of its normally lower price point too.
Also, for the bathroom floor, look into the stuff they use the do the floors of garages. There is a clear, durable, latex you can just roll on.

I probably walked by when I was in Japan last March/April. Beautiful renovation!

Having followed your journey since the beginning of the channel, I honestly admire the broad strokes ideas that you have and can see that you are getting very skilled at these projects! However, I recommend asking someone who is very detail-oriented on how to bring the whole together. I noticed a lot of spots where even a little adjustments of existing furniture and decor would improve the aesthetics as a whole and make the house feel even more finished. So if you have anyone among your friends who has a little interior designer in them, please ask for their opinion!

      Love this!
Thanks a lot for your comment. Styling of the house was actually made after this was shot, and loads of plants and coziness was added :))

That's why he used pine and mixed all kind of woods (not coherent). It's fine for rental

There are so many empty houses in Japan that Airbnb isn't affecting local communities the way it does in other places. It's also highly regulated.

It's different in Japan, as Airbnb's are regulated, and they have a housing surplus. At present there are tens of millions of abandoned houses across the country, even in the suburbs of major cities.

Yeah a bit too much pine . Douglas fir would have given it a more authentic look. Tell us about your Airbnb travails in Tokyo.
