I’m watching an old video with y’all’s intro about your dream and my heart is so full knowing that you now have land. A dream couldn’t have come true for a nicer couple. I wish y’all continued blessings and thank you for sharing your journey with us.
Mr. Hollis I love your little tiller. I have one I bought on clearance last fall. I don't have a place to use it yet but I'm getting ready for when I get more space. Right now I have four 4x4 raised beds and a whole bunch of containers with peppers and tomatoes. Thank you for all your help in my adventures. Say hi and thank you to Mrs. Nancy.
+JCruz1054 I love the cultivator. It keeps weeds at bay and breaks up the soil/mud after heavy rain. It comes in handy more than you realize. I can't live without mine😍
My wife T, says another Hollis and Nancy surprise, watermelon radish, a first for us. They are just beautiful, we never knew you could make from radishes and their tops, when we go to the farmers market, we'll look for sone. You two are always teaching all of us. Thanks for sharing.Blessings!!!
Absolutely love your videos. Love your personalities and how detailed videos are. You are inspiring me to start me own garden. Would definitely love to see a video on the soup recipe. Thanks!!!
Great videos! I am a fellow urban gardener and a fan! Here, try this and you will love it. With more of the chopped greens and some chopped radish meat, saute with garlic and chilli peppers (depending on how hot you want) and salt. Yummy!
Love the 2 of you, I am growing Watermelon Radishes this year because of your video. I had never heard of them. I did not know that you could eat the greens from the radishes. I look forward to making a soup out of them. Thank you for the great job you do.
+shannon wright Thank you so much for your kind words Shannon!! The a watermelon radishes are really good especially cooked. When grown in the spring they are a little more spicy than when grown in the fall. When cooked they are very mild. A great substitute for potatoes in the crockpot. Enjoy your soup! Have a peaceful Memorial Day Weekend 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
I can't wait to see the soup recipe. I don't think most people have ever cooked radishes. So I am very curious how they taste. Also have to say I love the garden progression videos. I love seeing everything come together. Great videos!
+Tammi Palmer Thanks for watching Tammi. I like the progression videos too. We get so many going the file maintenance becomes a beast. We have lost a few by accidentally deleting them. Have a peaceful long holiday weekend👍
I've never seen these radishes. Now I'm going to look up what other kinds there are, cuz WOW!!!! I love not wasting the greens - I'll look at Nancy's soup recipe. (I love beet greens in salad because they are mild. I wonder what radish greens taste like, if they're mild enough for salad). Love and blessings.
Yes, I second this. I would love to learn how to cook using watermelon radish with Nancy. Just planted my first watermelon radishes this year. God Bless.
I planted these seeds in a large grow bag. The tops are healthy green, but the radish are small and look more like baby carrots. I cut one and it's def. a watermelon radish. Any tips for next year? Zone 6 , so planting will be over soon. Thanks in advance
Recommend planting in an earth bed in lieu of containers or grow bags. Do not add any fertilizer at all. Fertilizer will only make the tops grow and the bulb will be stringy like a carrot
I planted mine in early spring and they are quite small and going to flower. I have just learned that its important to plant your watermelon radishes in the last week of July so they can mature in the cool of fall.
+Kenneth DeMarco (Iwalkoutdoors) They taste great raw. Not hot, very mild. They cook great as well. Try them sliced up and cooked in the crock pot with a pork roast. Very tasty!!!
I've never heard of such a radish but those are beautiful! I'm just curious do you ever plant partial rows at a time and do succession planting on the rest of the row later? Or are you able to eat all the produce/give it away/ or can it in time.
HI...I'm in zone 8A. when is the best time to grow these? Since I've missed the spring/summer growing season, can I grow these watermelon radish in the fall or winter? Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us. I appreciate you.
Nope. They grow so fast you don’t have to ring them in👍. Great question! Best of luck to you with your garden this year. Have a peaceful Easter Weekend 😇
How big is your plot? In other words, How long are your rows? I see you have several rows dedicated to one plant. Do you grow enough just for you personal consumption or do you give away or sell your harvest?
I have seen seeds for these in the past and didn't know what I was looking at... Now..I probably won't find them. Probably wouldn't need to plant very many. Anyway...will Nancy share her recipe? Please?
I got the seeds from Baker Creek Seed Company. They are sometimes called Chinese Red Meat Radishes. Nancy has a video on our channel for the watermelon Radishes
+Linda Reilly They are a Radish. They are mild for a Radish especially if grown in the fall. They are good raw in salads, cooked in the crockpot with a roast and my personal favorite, watermelon Radish soup❤️❤️
I planted watermelon radish seeds and now the bulbs are huge but the bulbs are red on the outside instead of white like they are supposed to be. Did i do something wrong?
@@HollisNancysHomestead i harvested my radishes and found out that i was lied to. I was not given watermelon radish seeds, they were solid white on the inside and some of the spiciest radishes ive ever tasted. Nothing like watermelon radishes are supposed to be like.
LOL. I agree. We have shortened them up considerably from when we first started doing videos. Check out our newer videos and you will see they are shorter
+Ricardo Gonzalez thanks for watching Ricardo! When I say "the meat from the radish" I am referring to the middle 1/3 of the globe. Have a peaceful weekend👍

I am always fascinated how you to do your video from planting to harvesting.... I always want to see results that's is why I love your videos
+Dejan Durdevic
Thank you so much!! It is helpful to see the entire cycle of a plant so first time growers know what to expect along the way
Blessings brother! Did u add any fertilizer when u planted the watermelon radish!
+Marthy Mesa
No, do not add fertilizer to radishes. It will cause them to bolt
I always called that a Daikon radish. Looking forward to seeing soup! Thanks for sharing.
+Tooshie G
It is one of the many varieties of Daikons👍
I love your videos. I aspire to be as fruitful as you are when I start my farmstead. God bless you and yours and your garden always!

I didn't know they grew that big! I definitely have to thin mine out...
We planted okra for the first time this year. We love it but not to many people grow or eat it in the north. We are looking forward to harvest.
Okra loves hot weather. That is why it grows so well down here in the south. We LOVE okra. So healthy for you
I'm gonna have to look into getting some of these. They look Delicious. Have a blessed day.

I just planted these for the first time here in NH. Yours look great.

thnx now I know to look for them. I've never heard of them before.
Those are beautiful, if I had seen them in the store I probably would have thought they were turnips.

3 to 4 inches in diameter is about perfect👍
It would be good if nancy could do a video on how she makes the soup with the radishes. Yah bless.

They taste great raw. Not hot, very mild. They cook great as well. Try them sliced up and cooked in the crock pot with a pork roast. Very tasty!!!
Great and informative video! What kind of soil do you use for the radishes?
+Viviana Cisneros
Radishes grow well in most soils as long as it is well drained. No fertilizer required, needs direct sun👍
I've never heard of such a radish but those are beautiful! I'm just curious do you ever plant partial rows at a time and do succession planting on the rest of the row later? Or are you able to eat all the produce/give it away/ or can it in time.
+Fun On A Budget
Yes, I do several succession rows but we hub so much away that we actually don't have enough
I’ve never heard of those. They are beautiful! Do the greens taste similar to turnip, mustard, collards?
They are a daikon radish
How much depth does this variety need? I really want to try it but only have access to containers!
could you tell me..... are the pie plates to keep birds away?
+XoCaReBeArXo
Yes, check our our video on Bird, Squirrel and Rabbit deterrents. It will help you out😍
Do you ever do anything with the greens?
Sorry if I’d just waited a few more minutes. I want to make the soup.
how heavy is each watermelon radish?
About a pound

+Vickie Tran
Hi Vickie,
We are in Zone 8A as well. Yes, you can direct sow these in mid to late August. They take 60 days to harvest.👍👍👍
Thank you...I will sow these next month.
+Vickie Tran
Have a blessed day Vickie😇
How many seeds do you put in each hole?
+boosangel2
One seed per hole
Do you have to pull the soil away from the base of the plant like you do with onions?
Nope. They grow so fast you don’t have to ring them in👍. Great question! Best of luck to you with your garden this year. Have a peaceful Easter Weekend 😇
Wow :-) god is yummy.

Each row was 50 feet. We don’t sell anything. We grow extra to share with others. We share far more than we consume
what is those white things in your garden on the grown that look like golf balls

LOL. Eggshells. I let them bake in the sun for a couple of weeks before I till them in

They are a Radish. They are mild for a Radish especially if grown in the fall. They are good raw in salads, cooked in the crockpot with a roast and my personal favorite, watermelon Radish soup❤️❤️
Why my whatermelon radish grow up to 3-4inch and then fall on the grownd and die? I didn`t use any fertilizer.
Gorgeous radish....I didnt think they got that big. Not a good candidate for a container I suppose.
They can be grown in a five gallon bucket but you will get a much better yield in a raised bed or earth garden
Thank you
You are very welcome ❤️
