    Hi Scoutcrafter
Been watching your vids for just a few months now.
Your restorations got me thinking about a adjustable wrench i was given a long time ago.
Only a small 6 inch affair and really badly negelected. In fact they had been left outside in the garden and were covered in baked on soil and rust.
This morning i was clearing the shed and came across the wrench,So decided it was time to have a go at getting them working again.
I used hand wire brush and wd40 to get them free and moving.Stripped them and gave them a good dersust and oiling.
They now work like new and imagine my surprise when i cleaned all the crap away and found they are BAHCO ERGO made in Sweden.
Great little adjustables now that were headed for the scrap bin until i saw your vids.

I enjoyed this restoration and nostalgia. We didn't have air pin nailers when I started vocational carpentry and cabinet school in 1975. Everything had to be jointed or doweled. Small facings that couldn't be attached required pin nails driven by hand with hammers like this. An excellent restoration as always!

Speaking about the tape, really everything made before incorporation of plastic was made beautiful, comfortable & durable. Drilling a hole in the handle was a nice tip, thanx for that. Straight pein hammer was a new revelation for me, thanx for this too.

    Polish on the leather
    And shine on the brass.
    The tape is fantastic.
    It's really first class.
    You brought that hammer
    Back from the dead.
    The gunstock finish
    Is beautiful-nuff said.
    The technique with that hammer
    When hitting the nail
Keeps a smile on your face
    Instead of a wail!
    An interesting hammer
    With An interesting head.
    We love the color choice-
    ScoutCrafter Red.

  • @troon5488
    @troon5488 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

In English terminology, the “brad” is referred to as a “panel pin”, used for pinning panels into a frame when making cabinets. The cross-pein face allow the pin to be sunk close to the frame, without interference from the round head, also reducing the likelihood of marring the frame. Anther viewer mentioned fitting glass to a window frame in a similar fashion.
Your finger and thumb are safe as long as they are below the head, as the “V” formed when gripping the pin acts as a guide to neatly channel the cross-pein face onto the head of the panel pin. When working as a tradesman, efficiency is key, as using extra time to pick up and put down another tool (needle-nose pliers) for each nail reduces your output.

Wilko the brand of this hammer is pronounced "will-co" or will-co's either is acceptable in the UK.
Wilkos is s low cost home and hardware store selling all types of Chinese made stuff. But that said they sell some reasonable tools such as your hammer.
In the past before plastic window frames these sorts of hammers where used to hammer the very small nails used to fix the glass in place before putting up the glazing bars in wood window frames
And I don't think a hammer from wilkos has ever looked so good

I pull out a hammer like that when I am restoring an old musical instrument case. All kinds of thin wire nails and short brass nails were used to piece together the wooden inserts that formed the base over which the velvet would be glued. I have a "brad driver" which is a wooden handle with some telescoping tubes and a small magnet in it. You put the brad in, and then push it in with the force the handle gives you, followed by tapping it in with a normal hammer if need be. I don't know when it was invented but I was curious about it after seeing it in a book from the 80s. People who construct light things out of thin wood like modelmakers and beekeepers seem to like it.

Evening John, your Pin hammer is made by wilko and when you’re driving small pins or tacks that cross peen will make starting the pin much easier. The old cabinet makers used to put the pins in their mouth and using a a Warrington pattern cross peen, they’d drive them so quickly and accurately it’d make you wonder how they did it and in a word, it was experience! Those carpenters cross peens come in various sizes up to fairly substantial weights. Most people today see a claw hammer as a universal carpentry and joinery hammer but in the past, in a joinery or cabinet makers workshop, cross peens were king and the claw hammer was looked upon as a tool for rough carpentry, shuttering and framing out on site. When I was at school, our wood working workshops had predominantly cross peen hammers in all sizes.

That's a really common hammer style in the UK. Sort of thing nearly everyone here will have in draw in the house somewhere for light work with small nails etc. Really good for putting a pin in wall to hang a picture etc or mending draws and picture frames and the like. As you say professionally it was used by cabinet makers and as others have pointed out glaziers. I really like them and keep a lookout for nice ones at car boot sales.

Place a thin peace of card on the glass and run the long flat edge against the glass with the card between and you will find that the glass has no chance of being broken.

Hi scout, nice leather tape , you used that cross pein pin hammer correctly, I have used one for years ,and can tell you every so often you will nip your skin when starting tack's ,and boy does it hurt,!****,lol. I favour a cross pein type of 10, to 16 ozs , for cabinet work and lighter joinery, whith one of these and a claw hammer of your choice for the general work ,I think you've got it covered, having said that I have more hammers than you could shake a stick at, ha, ha, but mostly only use a couple of em, the big ones are now wall hangers, as my wrist doesn't like swinging them these days, well I guess that's nailed it from me,lol, take care Scout, Best wishes to you and your's, Stuart.uk.

This video reminded me of the shop class teacher using a "Balpien" hammer to show us how rivet material together. Yet we made tool boxes with pop rivets

The Full metal jacket scene was very well done and just a little disturbing.

Wilko is a shop chain, like Woolworth's but smaller. The hammer would also be good at driving in window brads they are small and flat and the cross peen would hit them better against the glass.

Perfect restoration. Are you sure that wasn't the original handle and you just fitted it back on?! Thanks for the demonstration of the crosspien hammer. Who'd have thought that after so many needle-nose pliers, bits of paper and even that stupid plastic thing that comes with flat-pack furniture, there was a simple 'old-timey' method!

@@ScoutCrafter UK here, John, and I'm aware of the Wilko brand. [A hardware & household goods chain - a bit 'HomeDepot' i suspect]. Reasonable prices, mid-range quality. Rumour has it they're in some financial downturn but who isnt these days.

I have a couple of these cross-peen hammers and use them all the time - light weight, but quite a bit of concentrated mass, so very useful for small brads etc, as you showed.
Jacques Balpein - hahaha! - I wonder how many sucked that up? ;-)

The hammer is a wilko brand, the most expensive cost a round 399 but can be found on sale to as little a 199 !! All English people recognized this quality brand. For any one that would like the price in dollars, let me think... 5bucks sale two and a half buck.

I learned something new today! Out of curiosity, if the tape measure was dirty on the fabric and had stains and stuff, how would you tackle cleaning the tape?

    • @ScoutCrafter
      @ScoutCrafter  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Joe- Believe it or not they were specially treated and varnished to make them water resistant... If they are really worn and dirty you could wash them but you had to make sure they were bone dry before rewinding them or they would stretch or get moldy!

33 feet is 1/2 chain. 20 chains in 1/4 mile and is one side of a square 40 acres. 80 chains is one mile.
