  • The Fly Navy Heritage Trust's and Royal Navy Historic Flight Hawker Sea Fury T.20, VX281, G-RNHF, making its 2018 public airshow debut in the capable hands of Lieutenant Commander Chris Götke, AFC, RN, on the first day of the Duxford Air Festival 2018.
The Sea Fury T.20 is a twin-seat trainer variant of the Sea Fury and, unlike the other aircraft of the Royal Navy Historic Flight, which are all registered on the military register, Sea Fury T.20 G-RNHF (VX281) is owned by the Navy Wings charity (Fly Navy Heritage Trust) and is operated on the civilian register.
The Sea Fury T20 was a fighter trainer and is still used today by the Royal Navy Historic Flight to give Sea Fury display pilots much valued access to a trainer version of this most demanding of aircraft types.
A masterpiece of power and performance, the T20 generates great interest and excitement at air shows around the country.
She was the second of 60 Sea Fury T20 aircraft built as weapon trainers for the Fleet Air Arm. Delivered to the Royal Navy in 1950 she served with 736 and 738 Naval Air Squadrons at Royal Naval Air Station Culdrose before being sold to the West German Government in 1963. Painted in the markings of an F10 single-seat aircraft of 799 Naval Air Squadron based at Royal Naval Air Station Yeovilton in 1949, VX281 was acquired from the United States in 2007 and rebuilt at North Weald.
The aircraft is loaned to the Royal Navy Historic Flight by the Fly Navy Heritage Trust and is displayed by the Historic Flight under an agreement between the Trust and the Royal Navy. In 2014 the aircraft suffered engine failure during a display manoeuvre at RNAS Culdrose Air Day and the Trust launched a successful £200,000 appeal to buy a new Centaurus 18 engine and the Sea Fury T20 was restored to fly.

An excellent display, nice to see another Sea Fury on the display circuit, I hope they get the funding to keep these flying, many thanks for posting.

Chris, The single seater is awaiting its rebuilt engine, in addition they're trying to get their second Swordfish back in the air and get funding to repair their damaged Sea Vixen. Sadly though, I have heard that the MoD are withdrawing funding for the RNHF in 2019 ( I hope that I'm wrong?).

Steve: I am afraid your information source is correct, funding was to be withdrawn this year, but as it is the RAF 100th anniversary it was postponed until next year, so all funding will have to be from donations, a difficult task in these less than prosperous times.

My favourite piston powered aircraft (other than the P-61). Absolutely wonderful!! The beauty and the sound of the Fury/Sea Fury. Magnificent!

This one features a GOOD announcer. He actually let the Fury's engine do all the talking!

Where were these used in anger ???

They were used 'in anger' during the Korean War by both the Royal Navy and the Royal Australian Navy. In one particular famous engagement a Royal Navy Sea Fury pilot downed a North Korean Mig-15 and became the first piston engined pilot to down a Jet Fighter. I think they were also used by the Cuban Air Force during the 'Bay of Pigs' Invasion. The Dutch Navy used them for counter insurgency in the Dutch East Indies and Burma deployed some in a similar combat role against China.

Sure hope the RNHF can keep this accident-free.

I'm just a Hill-Billy yank from MO, but I believe a Corsair could take her on & win(!)

Quite possibly, although as USA and UK are 'friends', thankfully they won't have to! It would be interesting to know how often, if ever, Corsairs and Sea Furys flew together in battle against a common enemy during the Korean War and other post WW2 conflicts?

@@HighFlight ;-) I was just 'pulling your tail' mate! The Sea Fury is bad ass (I think more than a few have raced very well in Reno & elsewhere) & a newer design than the Corsair. Was there a Hawker model (not Hurricanes) that was before the Fury that saw action during WWII? Cain't remember the name of the British gas-dripping plane (maybe not a Hawker) that IF you could get it off the runway without catching fire & the tail breaking off, it was a damn muscular fighter!

@@boboala1 No problem. It was the Hawker Typhoon and Tempest that preceded the Sea Fury. The early Typhoons had a tail structure problem leading to 25 aircraft and 23 pilot losses. I'm not sure about fuel leaks, but there was an oil seal problem on the props. Both were used for low level ground strike armed with rockets, bombs and cannons mainly I believe.

The Royal Navy sea Fury's were. Credited with shooting down a Mig 15 jet In the Korean war funnily enough and unfortunately ironically True the MIGs. had a British engine in it designed by Frank whittle. A advanced type. Gifted to a visiting. Russian commies party members by a labour government who wanted to thank the Russians being good chaps helping the allies defeat. The Germans. A Goodwill offer. And on the UNDERSTANDING. that they don't reverse engineer the engine. Lol can you see the faces of the Russians. Lol. When Stalin was informed of the offer he thought it a joke you couldn't make that shit up only us British could do that. Also. When the Americans got to find out they wasn't best pleased since they would soon be fighting the north Korean Mig equipped jets
