A game changer for me in breaking down sheet goods was putting a 4x8 sheet of 1" ridged insulation under my plywood. It acts as a sacrificial support and greatly reduces tear-out. Can use it when drilling holes too.
Five years ago I did that same bed build. It was an enjoyable protect to do. It turned out well and it sure makes a single use room into a multiple use room. It is very practical to do.
We are putting together a studio apt that will eventually be an AirBnb. We purchased the Rockler Murphy Bed kit last Dec and we are finally to the point we are going to start putting it together. Thanks for the great video!
Hey, April. Thanks for the step-by-step follow-along! One suggestion for you regarding sanding, and that is to do it prior to assembly, and especially prior to bedding down your hardware, as it's much more time consuming and difficult to do after it's in place. If you're worried about scruffing the sanded surfaces, a light wash coat of waterborne sanding-sealer sprayed on with your Fuji Spray HVLP spray system (which I know you've got, as we've seen you use it before), will do the job. And the nice thing about it is that when you apply your mild paint, the surface will be even smoother! Again, good build, as always. Cheers, Marty Schlosser
Love this! I'm just visualizing how I could raise it enough so a backless sofa can be in front of it and used as legs... then the bottom having something for support as well.
Hi it great seeing a proper wood worker I am a carpenter and joiner but now I'm in a wheelchair and now I can't get in my workshop I will have to disine lower benches
Another awesome project April. The detail pieces that you added to the outside of the door look cool. It might have been interesting if you saved the overlapping pieces, that you cut off with the trim saw, to attach to the outer edges of the sides of the cabinet. That way the sides would've been flush to the door. I was just thinking since they were already painted it would've finished off the look. Can't wait for the next video.
Great looking project, and very well presented! If you ever do another Murphy, I'd love to see you review/install one of those 'desk beds', where a desk hangs off the bed bottom, is a desk in the up position and the bed's foot/pedestal when down, but stays level throughout, so you don't have to unload it to use the bed. Our smallish guest bedroom would benefit from it, but I haven't seen the model or video yet that suits me, and you'd do a great job, as always!
Kinda serendipitous. Never searched for anything like this, but... Was thinking about something like this the other day... I dont have a ton of space but have been getting into playing VR games and have been trying to optimize my floor space. Thought that such a bed frame would be bonkers expensive - and pre built they are - but knowing there is a hardware kit that allows custom builds and is actually priced not so bonkers expensive is a good thing.
Outstanding! I've been contemplating that kit for our guest room... You made it look easy -- because it is! Thanks for letting me see how simple it is to build!
Watching you stand on the bed frame to screw things into the back wall was pretty comical. "You should be in the movies!" What wonderful dogs you have! They obediently jumped right into the bed with you to keep you company! Great!
Hi April; very nice and comprehensive video - thanks for sharing. I'm wanting to build the same Rockler bed and have just one question: do the "doors" have any structural value in stabilizing the bed frame? My build won't look like an add-on piece of furniture; it'll have traditional opening doors. Bottom line, can I skip the extra plywood that makes up the faux doors. Thanks, Daniel
Build question for you - how thick is your mattress? I saw the kit you used from rockler has a max thickness of 10" and I see that most Casper and Nectar mattresses are 11 to 12. Is there enough space to allow for thickness or does your cut sheet allow for this? Thanks for the vids!!
Very nice, can't wait for the floating shelves! I have done one in our office and want to do one in the living room but will wait and see your version.
Been there done that, queen with closets on each side. Rockler makes a great kit. Wait a minute, Rockler told me they weren't selling that type of frame due to break down issues. I had to make the whole thing out of wood.
Neat, you're did a Murphy Bed. I've been wanting to make one with shelving on hinges, levers/linkages for cranks to keep the shelves level when closing and opening so the stuff can stay on the shelves. Seems gravity might work if enough load/ballast... though to be safe the cranks with linkages seem more reliable and for repeatable operation so stuff don't fall off the shelves. Cool!
I’ve seen a design online somewhere for that idea, but it was a desk on the other side that stayed level at any position; was designed for a college dorm.
I saw your T shirt . I didn’t realize that you were from Texas . My wife is from Dallas and she moved to southeast La with me . I had to educate her about cooking because she didn’t realize we have to drink 🍹 when cooking .😁 or doing any project .
Definitely a difference in the culture, Kirk. I'm originally from SE Louisiana, ended up in Central Texas for nearly 25 years thanks to the Army and subsequent contract work at an Army post, and just moved back to SE Louisiana a few years back.
Hi I am new the subscriber. I always want to have one and make it myself. Thank you for making it easy and providing helpful tip through out the project. Take care and stay safe.
I LOVE IT! I wonder if your swivel tool cabinet idea would work for a queen/king murphy bed. I need a murphy bed. I would like one that swivels/revolve, so I could have a TV and shelves. What do you think?
Very nice job on that bed. Watch you balance on the bed while attaching the pieces to the wall had me LOLing. Glad you did not get stuck inside the bed.
What a cool video! I always thought those looked neat and loved it in old slap stick movies people would get caught up in one! Ha! We love our Casper Mattress and highly recommend it!
Dowel points are very useful for lining up dowel joint holes. You drill holes in the first board, then put the points in the holes, then put the second board in position against the first and tap it with a mallet. The points both mark the correct location for the holes on the second board and center-punch the holes so your drill won’t walk around. If you don’t have the points, perhaps you could put screws in the first set of holes instead (then remove them to put the dowels in). I haven’t tried it with screws, though.
With all the space you have in your new shop, have you considered buying or building a panel saw? Seems like that is an easier way to cut down sheet goods, it just takes up so much space.
Great design with the doors. The kit overall seems to be quality and easy to assemble. From a function stand point, from the video angle of its installation in the shed, it appears to have very little room for someone to get into the bed on the side closest to the back/side wall. That would make it easier for two people to use the bed without have to crawl over one another.
that it the unspoken truth about murphy beds. Normally they stay open after a couple of weeks. Nobody wants to remove the bedding every morning, stuffing it in a box or so without airing.
Question - did you need adjust the depth of the mounting brackets to accommodate for the fact that you did not apply 3/4" "shaker rails and stiles" to the two slab door fronts? In the Rockler instructions, they put the shaker trim on and it looks like those are then flush to the front of the box. Since you didn't add those, which is something we are going to do, we were wondering if the hardware position needs adjusting. Thanks! We are ordering panels pre=drilled from a factory and they need to know the locations.
After reviewing the dimensions for the plywood, there is a lot of waste. If I use the leftovers to piece together the 26 inch by 63 1/4 inch lower headboard, you can do this queen sized project with 4 pieces. Not sure two pieces totaling 26 inches is structurally deficit. What do you think?
Rocker doesn’t make a King Murphy bed kit. Not sure if they used to and stopped or what. But, could you look into whether it would be possible to use two of their twin kits to make a King?
Can I ask how it works with no headboard? Do pillows get trapped? Does it cause any problems while sleeping with no headboard? What do you do will the pillows when you close it up? I'm thinking of buying this hardware, but I want to make sure it butts up against the wall enough when open (or a headboard solution at least). Thanks!
Put a pair of bar-style drawer pulls in the vertical position, one on each board, to sell the whole "large cabinet" motif you've got going on. No one will know it's a Murphy until you pull it down.

April your TH-cam videos are brilliant love watching your so skilled and make great stuff love the bed and the workshop looks great keep the good work up 😀😀

You rock April! If you ever get tired of your shop I'll take it off your hands. Keep up the good work!!
Wish I was this handy! such a big and spacious workshop.
Love this! I'm just visualizing how I could raise it enough so a backless sofa can be in front of it and used as legs... then the bottom having something for support as well.
Great project. I added a shelving unit to each side and topped it with crown molding as a built in look.
you make it look easy! maybe its your great attitude. anyway how do you adjust the springs to make the bed easier to lift into the wall?
Hi it great seeing a proper wood worker I am a carpenter and joiner but now I'm in a wheelchair and now I can't get in my workshop I will have to disine lower benches

I haven’t checked in on you for a while. My god your shop is to die for! I’m turning green with envy. Nice work by the way!
I'm from Egypt , every time I watched your videos. April graet , great , great .
Outstanding! I've been contemplating that kit for our guest room... You made it look easy -- because it is! Thanks for letting me see how simple it is to build!
Holy crap, 1 million by this summer. Congrats. Well deserved!
You are an excellent technician. Well done.
And another excellent job completed, this gal is unstoppable, that anybody would want her to stop!! No No never.
You're an ocean of positive energy. Thank you.
Where is the cut list? I couldn't find it in the website
Also what thickness of plywood did you use?
Watching you stand on the bed frame to screw things into the back wall was pretty comical. "You should be in the movies!"
What wonderful dogs you have! They obediently jumped right into the bed with you to keep you company! Great!
You are some awesome lady! I am also a mechanically inclined lady. I drooled over your work shop! Just discovered you today!

I have the same question.
Hello April you did a nice job on that fold away bed you do really good wood products keep up the good work
Very nice, can't wait for the floating shelves! I have done one in our office and want to do one in the living room but will wait and see your version.
You’re shop looks incredible and you’ll be at a millions subscribers soon
Great work! Thanks for taking the time to make, film, edit and share.
April, you never cease to amaze me! You are so talented girl!
Thanks! First timer. "SUBBED"! I've always loved "Murphy" beds. This is pushing me towards that garage office/guestroom project. G'day!
I just built one. I didn't use a kit. It would have been so much easier with your accommodations. It's an impressive shop. And you do impressive work.
Aw thanks! Glad you enjoyed it.
Been there done that, queen with closets on each side. Rockler makes a great kit. Wait a minute, Rockler told me they weren't selling that type of frame due to break down issues. I had to make the whole thing out of wood.
Excelente trabajo. Saludos desde España 🇪🇸
Totally awesome April💯🤙🏾. I’m a big fan of you and your work. Thanks for sharing!
Excellent build-You are like a pretty catalogue of great ideas! Casper mattress is perfect for this unit! Your narration is so great.
Very informative video and nice shop. I am going to be taking on this project this weekend but I can't find the cut list on your website anywhere.

Sweet ! Would make a great place for guests and no need for a extra room
Great design. Good work April.

So close to 1 million.
You are very much hardworking and creative mind. Best of luck.
Glad to see you doing the good ole stuff again. Even though I like the saw mill, this video is the good ole April.
Why are people putting "thumbs down"?
Excellent job as standard.
Thanks for sharing
Just like you to add your own touch to the project, love the arrow design.
really cool project !
I think this shed conversion is a fantastic idea! Also love murphy beds!
Wonderful as usual April!
Awesome work April.
Made it look soo easy... cant wait to see how mine comes out 🤔

Great job April! Love the idea of turning that space into guest quarters.

Now that would be a great future video... a DIY panel saw build!
Wilker Do is going to hit 1 million before the beginning of Summer. Party time?
Enjoyed the video April. That is a cool project. Really looks good. Thanks for taking the time to produce the video. Y'all take care and God bless.
Great build and your work shop is awesome

This came out so good! Great job!
you never disappoint! nice work, April!
That's awesome but what about for those of us without a shop like that? Any other ideas?
I spend way too much time watching her videos...but they're that good!
965,000+ subs...wow, you are crushing it on TH-cam! Well done
Great built, beautiful job
Great build. Well done.
Have you got a storage solution for the bedding/pillows? Presumably they need to be removed each time you close it?
that it the unspoken truth about murphy beds. Normally they stay open after a couple of weeks. Nobody wants to remove the bedding every morning, stuffing it in a box or so without airing.
@@mucsalto8377 Oh, thanks. I hadn't thought of that. Darn.
Finally your back to wood projects. Thanks
Great idea. I checked out the link and it doesn't show the mattress support, only the hinge hardware. Is that separate?
Awesome build with awesome tools..
Do you close the bed with the blanket? Or do you take off the blankets/pillows beforehand?

Nice build. Sleep well Murphett. 😴🐶🐶🐶
I like all your vids. You are clear and concise.
It would be nice to know the general price range of the kit and mattress.
Like she said, links for them are in the description.
Beautiful, I’m going to get my hubby to build this awesome bed💕 thanks😊
I would love to be your Apprentice and soak up all of that knowledge you have! I love your work!!!
April,
Great job, where's you're cut list, I couldn't find it.. Cheers
You always come up with some kind of design factor that makes the project pop. Great job and I enjoy your videos.
I've been wanting to build a bed like this! Thank you so very much for posting this video! I absolutely love your wood working videos!
Highly recommend a mattress bag. Lots of bugs around in a building that isn't used often.
Did you ever add the night stands or floating shelves?
Looks good. Great idea on the design for it.
I’m jealous about tools you own and workshop. I made Murphy bed too , but without ready kit. Unfortunately I could not figure out “return” mechanism
I've been looking at that same Rockler Murphy Bed kit. Very nice! Thanks!
Nicely done April! 😎

The problem with studios is space. Enjoyed the project. Thanks for the discount and for sharing the build.

April your TH-cam videos are brilliant love watching your so skilled and make great stuff love the bed and the workshop looks great keep the good work up 😀😀
I Love this! We’ve been thinking about making one for a smaller room we have in our house, and this is perfect for it. I love that Casper bed too!
