Dave Burd & GaTa Interview: Landing Brad Pitt for Dave Season 3 Finale & Future of Series

Before the Dave Season 3 finale dropped on Hulu, Collider’s Steve Weintraub spoke with co-creator, co-writer, producer, and star Dave Burd, and in-series Dave’s hype man and real-life rapper, GaTa about the final episode and those insane cameos. Both have been with the FX show, co-created with Jeff Schaffer (Curb Your Enthusiasm), since Episode 1, and their dynamic is unshakeable (due in large part to GaTa’s unconditional support), providing the comedy series with laugh-out-loud hysterics and moments of surprising gravity. As Season 3 comes to a close, we find out how names like Academy Award-winner Brad Pitt, Drake, and so many others, fit into “Lil Dicky’s” rise to stardom.
Since the first season, Dave has followed the titular rapper’s trajectory to fame, from LD’s TH-cam breakout to Season 3’s Looking for Love tour. The show naturally makes creative, episodic choices while telling a story fairly parallel to the real Burd’s success story, and is packed with celebrity cameos that stun season after season in a very meta, “Dave just got rejeted by Doja Cat” kind of way. Season 3 took us across the country, from his hometown origins to the Met Gala, and all the bumps in the road in between, and culminated in a star-studded spectacular, that leaves us wondering where we’re going to go next with Dave, GaTa, Mike (Andrew Santino), Elz (Travis Bennett), Emma (Christine Ko), and Ally (Taylor Misiak).
In their interview, which you can watch or read below, Burd addresses Dave’s confounding Robyn (Chloe Bennet) choice, writing music for the series, and the ever-present themes that drive Dave’s hunger for success. They talk about GaTa’s audition for the part written specifically for him, and GaTa explains that they have a “real great friendship, like real dynamic energies, always vibing,” and that’s why their onscreen chemistry is totally unique to this show, adding that “everything is real.” As far as that epic Season 3 finale, Burd reveals how he got “iconic pillars of entertainment” to guest star on the show, and why each of them represent so much more than a flashy cameo, and where that will take us into Season 4.

I felt like I was in a dream watching that insane wild finale with Brad Pitt
Literally. The whole time I was watching I felt like I was in a state of disbelief seeing Brad Pitt. Had to watch like 2 more times to fully enjoy it 😂😅

@@cgill914i love how they tease us. Made it seem like that cameo in the video was good enough and not overdue it (was in the script) yet he was one of the 3 actors the entire episode. It was an amazing ending. It felt like an Atlanta episode with the anxiety based content and humor. It was perfect, I hope they give a season 4 and Luke Pitt is still alive in Dave’s universe
You can tell Gata isnt PR/interview trained and it makes him seem like such a normal everyday dude in a genuinely good way
Yep, i wouldn’t want him to be anything other than himself. He’s the coolest dude and so genuine. I’m so stoked when I see him on other stuff like, yeah my boy is leveling up! He deserves all the recognition and accolades.

This show really is such a gem, full of emotion and laughter! As non-actors, GaTa and Dave are so fantastic.

Dude that's what blows my mind. My first thought was this is a cinematically shot biography. This has to have happened because these guys are so authentic but the whole team is just THAT good. These guys could be Truman showing me and I would NEVER know unless they wanted me to.

Yeah just imagine he released an album with each season. Would be epic. Not to mention the fact that he's working hard on an album and not releasing one is life imitating art (the show).

As much as I’d like another season; they really don’t need one (release an album instead. Dave’s character has basically completed his arc. He has gone from the bottom to hanging with Brad Pitt and Drake. He had Platinum success and is going to the Met Gala. He is a legit star. And his personal life; he knows what he wants. He (just like in season 1) chose career over love. It’s what he really wanted.
I need him to address Theo Von calling them out for stealing his shit. Never seen Theo look angry until that moment when he points it out haha
Theo needs to sit the f-ck down. He’s so full of himself. I saw it, it was two totally different premises.
Theo’s a mediocre stand up at best. nobodies stealing anything from him.
