The robotic movements, eyes moving before head, not watching reloads and hand movements like a machine, were Arnold Schwarzeneggers ideas. He told James Cameron who had originally planned on using OJ Simpson as the terminator believe it or not. Cameron was so impressed with Arnold's suggestions he asked Arnold to fill the role instead.
That twist in T2 is so clever as Cameron clearly echoed the start of the first film. The whole beginning implies that the T100 is actually a human sent back to protect against "the Terminator" much like Kyle Reese, even hiding any indication that it was actively killing people! They framed its initial attack to look just like a really good gut punch that knocks the Police officer out and in no way implies the metallic death blades that we later hear making very distinct sounds. Cutting away and implying he steals the clothes too while later we realise he just phase shifted into them. Its an awesome film.
You can hear Cameron and Schwarzenegger discussing the "mild" acid they used on the jacket on the "Other Voices" making-of feature on the DVD. It's the only time I've ever seen Cameron laugh. Incidentally the cop that Arnold bashes after being thrown, smoking, off the car is William Wisher, the screenwriter.
A real missed opportunity for the Simpsons clip with Rainier Wolfcastle screaming, "my eyes! The goggles do nothing" during the acid sequence for Radioactive Man
13:20 I remember going to see Thor Ragnarok with friends, and while it asn't such a big twist one of our friends had not seen any trailer or promo for the movie. I was like, "well, we're not gonna tell her anything, especially not that the Hulk is in this one! I kinda envy her, imagine seeing that as a surprise..:" Then we turned and she saw the poster. "Wait, the Hulk is in this one too?!" -.-
"The start of Terminator 2 is shot so you think the cop terminator is the good guy until the reveal". Doesn't the T-1000 literally kill the police officer to steal the uniform right at the beginning?
It doesn't show it. Until the very moment he says "Get down!", it's entirely believable that Arnold is the bad guy and Robert Patrick is the protector.
I actually just saw one commercial for Gensys before I saw it and I didn't know the twist, and I still wasn't surprised. John Connor being a terminator has been a fan theory type of thing for so long I was kind of expecting it to happen
I love the extra bit about Terminator always spoiling its surprise twist. And it's friggin' true. Rewatch T-2 and put aside the knowledge of "Arnie = good ; Robert Patrick = evil" for a second. Take the knowledge from the previous film of "big burly man = evil ; leaner, more conventionally attractive guy = good" and you will see that there is NO moment in the beginning of the film where you 100% are clear that the T-1000 is a robot and that he's the evil one. It's insane.
The best twist of any Terminator movie was seeing Matt Smith from Doctor Who as Sky-Net (or whatever the evil AI tgat made the Terminators was called).

On the subject of the scene from The Terminator at 2:42 thru 2:47: While I agree that that look of the damaged T-800 and the puppetry haven't aged well, I still think it adds to the intimidation factor of the T-800 with the "robotic" movement. T1 was also a horror movie as it was a sci-fi/action movie, after all.
It's kind of strange how The Terminator and Re-animator share a very large amount of their cast and that two of them decided to make a film about a teenage ballet dancer getting mind control powers from cancer
I always gave the rubber mask thing a free pass in the movie for the same reason I give the uncanny look of the stop motion animation a pass. The very concept of this movie is also VERY great for directors on a tight budget, because back then stuff like that wasn't as awful looking comparatively, but also it's the fact the character is a robot pretending to be a human. When you see the really unrealistic looking rubber Arnold face, to me it actually makes it even creepier because it's like realizing just how unnatural and false his body was - that it really was just a mask put on the robot. It made it hard to believe that anyone could really be fooled up-close, but he was also *damaged,* and my mind just kind of automatically assumed his disguise was falling apart. The uncanny look of the endoskeleton also helped sell the idea that it's a robot. If this was a dinosaur being animated then it'd be more silly today, but because that was a menacing killer robot, the uncanny movements are actually *A PART OF THE HORROR.* That's the genius of the movie imo. It utilized really cheap looking effects as a STRENGTH instead of a weakness that had to be worked around.
At 11:56 , I just turn to my wall and just admire a framed poster that's only slightly different. The "it's nothing personal" is just left of the shot gun in red instead.
Imagine being James Cameron trying to pitch T2 to a room full of producers. Arnold's back, guys! but this time he's a GOOD GUY.... ...AND he doesn't kill anyone...AND has a 14yo sidekick. Shit, you could tell me that Doom was Jesus, and that was his first attempt at ruling/saving the world, and I'd believe it. Like, three days after being crucified, Doom rolls the rock away from the tomb, dusts himself off, and says, "Well, I tried being a nice guy. Time to do things the hard way."
What amazes me about the rubber head scene is that the make up they use for Arnie towards the end (complete with missing eye, let alone most of his skin missing on the one side of his head) looks fucking amazing. But for some reason they decided to use, well, THAT, instead of just filming that one shot of motel scene when they were half done applying the (amazing) makeup for the final act.
