Great advice. I especially like your point about speed. When you are first learning to lay brick, or the first time that you are trying to learn anything, it pays huge dividends to go slow in the beginning stages. Speed should not enter your mind- set at all. Just focus on doing it correctly. The speed will come in time. I have a good friend who is a former Navy SEAL, and while I was helping him learn something new with horses, I told him, "You're too busy with your hands. Do less. Go slower with your hands." Almost immediately, his horse responded. Afterwards, we were drinking a cold beer, and he said to me that one of the SEAL mantras is this: "Slow is Smooth. Smooth is Fast." It makes sense. Focus on Slow and Smooth in the beginning. Fast will come.
my biggest gripe as a brick layer is most brick layers are more bothered about speed than quality of work. any clown can drop 1000 a day but doesn't mean they are right. I know instantly when some one is terrible when they start going on about how fast they are.
The bucket method is the best for mortor mix colour. Last year I was Labouring with a couple of bricklayers and it we were building a new corridor for a primary school. The manager was very hell bent on mortor ratio with a 3:1 mix. So at the end of the brickwork the colour of the mortor was constant and looked very nice too

I'll be replacing a failed window lintel on my 70 year old house this week.
Avid DIYer that was astonished but the three bids received. $1,240 to replace one 36" lintel, all the nopes.
Good advice for the young people coming through and definitely agree with the speed one as I think there is to much emphasis on speed and not enough about quality, I am currently working on a extension another couple of bricklayers where on and they flew threw it but ended up getting the sack as its a bit of a two and eight they have left places to hang your coat of and left wall ties out where there should be wall ties but they built what they built in no time but what did they gain the sack and a blot on there reputation, point is quality beats speed but learn good technique and be organised when loading out and this will add to your speed also with experience comes speed. Been a mason over 30 years quality is what kept us in business all these years 5 good tips don’t make cuts with a hammer, don’t oversand the cement a lot of masons do that hard to work with , keep walls and windows clean and end of the day, protect materials and don’t shift bonds just to avoid a cut 🍻🇨🇦
I start to really like this channel..))
When i have a large job I usually specify the mix and pack it into 25kg bags to have them ready for delivery. Although this needs a certain minimum amount to prove cost effective it is extremely practical and much cleaner especially when working in Urban or public projects. Although ready mix mortars are perceived as blasphemy in certain areas it is slowly becoming the norm in almost all large jobs and crowded areas. In spite of that, unless you know the basics don’t even try any ready mix anything.

Been doing it for years and the most frustrating advice when I was an improver (off the hod) was that speed would come. As hard as it is to take in... Your speed comes after you've learnt to be neat and precise.

I kicked off with a 12 inch Marshalltown over 45 years ago .... At 66 years old I still use 12 inch Marshalltowns . Gives you a great handshake !

Started on 12 inch marshal town way to heavy moved down to 11 inch great trowel.Also as improver/Beginner standing properly.Also when laying putting down the trowel and how to hold brick/Push and pull.
Exactly the same thing happened me when I was at skillbuild😂 I was the only one out of 10 people that didnt finish and I won the competition!! Nice one mate😂👍

I've just done as I was told.16 shovels to one 80 pound bag.always big shovels...lol I remember when I first started it was Friday pay day and it way 15m to 5 pay day and I just made a bag on my own accord and yeah the crew was pissed.boss made everyone continue till mid was gone and it was well after knock off time and pay day at that

I agree with everything you said even the speed and to anyone who says they can lay a 1000 a day my answer is union rate is 55 an hour and pointed on straight walling in 8 hours that's 440 . Nice video just a bit long but keep up the good work.

I think the bucket for mixing batches is a good idea although i spent 3+ years on the mixer and never fucked up the color that i know of
Used to lay with a 11” inch trowel that snapped over the years n bought a 9” trowel and it’s just perfect for everything

You’re 100% right about the speed I came second in my competition all because I went too fast and it was 2mm too low and for that reason alone I didn’t win safe to say I have learned my lesson now 😂😂
You shoul do a vid on how hard it is to go from hoddie to full time layer and the realalitise of time expected on the hod b4 your trained up..It tokk me 3years to get to trowel and evan now still hodd occationly.Price gang life lol.

A good tip. Don't be knocking your mortar up on your spots to much. The diluted mortar changes the colour and strengh. On some jobs where we get the premixed tubs that is for brickwork and can never be used on the face brick if knocked up. Ok for blocks though.
No 6. Don’t over order blocks!! I’ve seen that stack of blocks in most of your vids and I’m sure there’s a good explanation as there’s no way that’s an over order. So please enlighten me and I will sleep a bit easier 👌👌👌

In an earlier episode he mentioned getting a very good price on the blocks and ordered extra to supply a acquaintance. So he either renagued on the deal or hasn't collected them yet.
he bought them for his mate who is doing a different project because he got a discount so he can make some money on them, explained it a few weeks back

Gonna go for my bricklaying apprenticeship induction next Wednesday, I hope it goes well, do they pay for my tools ? Or should I have to buy them I heard you get a tool allowance?
Most of the time they give you cheap nasty ones so would advice you buying a cheap but comfortable trowel and maybe a nice level

@@debbieellis1701 there's a thing called tool allowance that the company should give you for tools.. You shouldn't need to buy your own you can go on .gov and see for yourself
my boss tells me to do the job as long as its alright but i am a perfectionist and i spend way too much time and hes like speed up chop chop and since then he took piss out of my speed etc pisses me off
Our ratio is 3 five gallon buckets of sand, one bag of mortar powder, one bucket of water (more or less water as needed)

right, precision is key. I as always on the saw, for 5 years. I guess because I would just cut and well thats it. Then I decided, OK, I am taking 4" blocks home, sand, and masons lime and build 4" block peir using my eye. Speed is cool, but so much gets missed and your body hurts and precision is key, when times are tough, the precision masons will stay working, the line burners will be sitting at home watching you work.

Obviously, because of your channel and your explanation skills you are better than than cattle and pigs. Remember, whether we like it or not folks judge us on our appearance.
