The episode was literally called “other lives” I have no idea how they didn’t pick it up it was fairly obvious it was an alternate reality especially once everyone started having kids that don’t exist. It’s a concept that’s happened in so many other shows, a main character gets critically injured or their close to death and they start imagining their lives outside of whatever put them in that situation to begin with.
The guy with the camera was John Singleton. This episode was in dedication to him. It was an alternate reality of what would have happened if he went to college. The point is that he would've ended up in the same place. Everything after he wakes up is real.
There’s a story that he tells that when he was younger he got roughed up a little bit for trying to film on the street corners. So that scene was a true story. The baby in the ep is John’s child in real life and the entire episode has Easter eggs to Singleton’s body of work over the years.
Its basically an alternate universe. What could have happened if he stayed in school. The odds were against him regardless of what route he took. Everything after the ice bath actually happened

And the writers of this show later on came out and confirmed it. They were just showing what his life could have been if he never became the Franklin Saint that we know
If you remember the episode started with in Black and white. Franklin was in a lecture at college. And they were talking about alternate universities and parallel realities. Then he looked at that cute white girl amd smilled and then the class ended. Then as he and the white girl came out of the building it went from black and white to colour. So the little bit that was in black and white was a true path situation that Franklin was probably recalling and then he started thinking about what the teacher said and started imagining what things could be like in another world. A world where Louie and Jerome had a kid(or a kid that survived) where Alton died on the streets, where Franklin never left college and instead stayed but then gets kicked out of money, where Leon and Wonda are together and happy, where Teddy is a CIA Agent but not undercover and happy doing normal CIA work. You know all the what ifs. Then after the ice bath it's back to reality and there has been a time jump of probably a month or two. And things are out of control
Right the part after the tub is actually foreshadowing for season 4 and what the crack rock did you manboy in blue and the boys in red to represent the war between the blood and crips
No one liked the episode when it came out but the guy in the middle is sorta right him in that tub was him thinking of his way out which is why he told Teddy at the end they both was gonna walk away
This episode was confusing me too & then I looked at the title "Other Lives" and realized it must be an alternate reality. I do think it's interesting to see how all roads lead back to the same life outcome, but I wish it wasn't a whole 40 min of the episode.
The Clue was in the opening the Professor at the College was giving a lecture about "Parallel Universes" and the possibilities that might exist in an alternate universe, and the choices and events would be different...... actually was a Masterpiece Episode. It's helping the audience see that even if he was straight-arrow good-boy , Franklin was still a black man in an fuq'ed up White Man's World, but that his smarts would have eventually got him recruited by the CIA, probably doing the same thing he is doing now..........
It was a dream/ alternate reality. Remember when it first started the professor and the white girl was talking about who you are in a different life ( this was Franklin's life if he didn't go down the way he went and his alternate universe life)
The only part of this episode I found interesting was the girl trying to befriend Franklin in college was said to be a representation of Hillary Clinton who would go on to call black and brown men super predators in the 90's.
I knew I wasn't the only one. I was so excited for this episode following the last and 2 mins in I was like "oh.. I'm not going to like this one" I kept waiting for the title sequence and when it finally came up I was like yea that's probably the worst episode I've seen.
