The leviathan didn't allow the catalyst to get away. The catalyst killed them all. It wasn't even a war. The catalyst destroyed them in mass. What you saw was the descendants of the few survivors.

    • @Wyrmksc
      @Wyrmksc 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

The Catalyst uses the term EONS, the cycles have been going on for at least two billion years. That is two billion years for the Leviathan species to continue evolving/developing it's powers they might not have been able to just slap a Reaper out of the air in the past. They have also had a culture of hiding for all that time.

    • @Raivo_K
      @Raivo_K 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Wyrmksc Not sure it was billions of years ago. If the cycles occur every 50000 years and the approximate number of reapers is in the single digit thousands. So if it's true that each cycle ends with a birth of the reaper. By that calculus 2000 reapers equals about 100 million years. In order for the cycles having been occurring for billions of years there would have to be 40000 reapers minimum. And that just does not make sense from what we've seen in the cutscenes and what the characters have said.

Destruction is paradoxaly the only moral choice I think,
Control make you a ultimate being that could turn Tyranical any day

it's the complete opposite of what we've tried to achieve bringing the galaxy together despite their differences so far

@@Deorman Because Destroy is the only ending in which you actively kill your allies, in spite of the fact that there are Viable alternatives in which no one has to die.
The negative consequences of the other 2 endings are just conjecture. Yes, Shepard "could" turn Tyranical one Day, but the Galaxy "could " also explode tomorrow. You dont sacrifice an entire sentient species because otherwise something bad "could" happen one Day down the Line.
Synthesis erasing every nuance between the Races by binding them into an Robotic hivemind(as the common argument against it is) is pretty much disproven in the Synthesis ending itself. Remember that scene where that Asari carrying the Box bumps into the aliance soldier, and he makes an apologetic gesture towards her? or how Your Loveinterest only notices that Edi looks sad when they look at her? Both things wouldnt happen in a hivemind, where individual perspectives are erased.
I personally just dont think valueing an shaky phylosophical point, or an "maybe something could go wrong" over actuall peoples lives can really be called the moral choice.
There is an understandable rationale behind the Destroy ending, but no more than any of the other endings, and at least from my perspective (lives > High Brow Phylosophy) its actually the least Moral ending.
You let Fear define what you are.
I meant no offense against you personally, i just really hate that constantly rehased argument.

I have to say Kali, I've watched quite a few playthroughs of this trilogy, but something about yours strikes a chord with me.
I'm not sure what it is exactly, but it must have something to do with the level of authenticity you exert in your choices, the genuine interest you have in the ME universe and its characters, your ability to look past black & white and see all the shades of grey, and the way we can actually feel how you're feeling in a given moment.

It isn't just with her playthrough, I've seen it with tons of ME playthroughs. People get very upset when you don't do things the way they perceive as being 'the best'. Or if you don't do the missions and DLC's in the order they think is best. I saw one youtuber getting abuse in their comments because they left the archangel recruitment mission till later in ME2. It's insane the level of backseating that goes on in comment sections.
People need to remember it's a blind playthrough for a reason. It's highly unlikely someone is going to make all the best choices without messing up somewhere. She did incredibly well really.

@@VenomKpp i remember hearing somewhere that bioware was actually surprised and a bit disappointed when they realized that like 95% of players just pick the paragon option for everything. its a whole rabbithole you can go down about human psychology, because obviously nobody in real life is that virtuous, but when people play games and can choose whatever they want, people almost always choose to be really good people. I'm thinking and hoping for the new mass effect that the choices and playstyles are more balanced

It's so weird when player's make the argument that they choose to not "Play God" when Destroy is literally killing all synthetic life. But great playthrough! This was fun. To me, with the extra knowledge that I learnt at the end of the game, Control is my personal canon ending because I didn't succumb to choosing the fate of other races whether merging into a new DNA or straight up killing all synthetics after everything we went through. They would be completely new Geth based on the old Geth: just like how the Clone Shepard is literally nothing like the original Shepard.
The Codex explicitly says that when an AI is deleted, its dead: uploading the same files into new hardware will create an entirely new AI. This is also the conversation Engineer Adams and Engineer Donnelly were having when talking about EDI being limited to the Normandy.
Anyone who fundamentally argues for the destroy ending on the idea that Geth "can just be rebuilt" are basically agreeing with Javik that they are toasters and ignoring the codex, books and statements that say this explicitly is not how AI work in Mass Effect.

I'm a little late watching your latest Mass effect episodes but I was busy sadly, but I finally I did my catch up. Thank you for your playthrough, it was one of the best on TH-cam! Made your own choices and done what you really wanted to even if it was not the best decision, but you belived it was and that's what matters, this playthrough was truly yours unlike some other guys on TH-cam, and even added some unqiue touch with your edits. Hello from France ! 🇫🇷 I just wanted to take a moment to say how much I appreciate your content. I don't normally watch playthrough of big games like this, but there's something special about the way you approach these games. Your involvement in the story, your attachment to the characters, and your love for the Mass Effect video games are truly palpable. As a long-time fan of this trilogy, to see someone else share that love and invest emotionally in the same way as I do is incredibly refreshing. Thank you for all the work you put into your videos and for the passion you convey. It's truly a pleasure to watch someone play with such emotion and dedication. I'm floored. What an amazing end to an amazing playthrough. I've seen one other playthrough, but the raw emotion of yours seriously stood out. You notice a lot of nuances in the body language and voices, like when Shepard said "Hold on. We can do it" with that shakey voice when defending the missles to take down the destroyer to get to the beam. Also destroy FTW. Imo, we set out to destroy them all along, so that works for me. RIP Edi and the Geth. They'll be missed. Kaidan, Jenkins, Mordin, Thane, Legion, Eve, Anderson, Conrad Verner, Kelly, Pressley, and maybe even TIM too.
I'm absolutely in love with this trilogy. It holds a special place in many hearts. Welcome to the club. This is my favorite one on the Citadel 💙

After many years watching reactions and comments on yt about my favourite trilogy played on every aspect (even done vids tributes at prime time), it's the first time liking ALL single vids in a walkthrough, your emotional eloquence is refreshing and lovely, i will miss your fine mind, your compassion and your commitment for this game and finally this channel can only become more popular with the personality that you are. Regarding the trilogy, how envious i am that all new players have the extended cut dlc, this new ending is stil with plot hole but the original one back in 2012 roll the end credits with Joker in this no man's land without knowing what's happen for rescuing our crew and many other things, anyway wishing you all the best Kali and may the Goddess be with you.

3:06:56 That heartbroken "Damn it" from Joker always cuts deep. He still feels guilty for getting Shepard killed at the start of ME2, and he's holding onto hope, refusing to abandon Shepard. And when he realises that there's nothing that he can do to save Shepard, his Commander, his friend, it breaks his heart to leave him/her behind. I don't know how the game decides who tells Joker that it's time to go, but some of them also hit really hard.
An interesting thing is in the catalyst child's voice. You can hear a deeper echo behind it, which is actually the voice of BroShep (Mark Meer). If you're playing as a male Shepard, then the voice of FemShep (Jennifer Hale) echoes behind the child.

My first time seeing it crushed me in regards to everything that would happen (NO SPOILERS) and hope your next play through would be even more epic offscreen. Adding the knowledge with turning up your insanity difficulty adds a well amount of spice to all you’ve achieved throughout the games so I’d highly recommend it. The thing i notice about peoples reaction to ending of Mass Effect 3 now, is that they seem to be taking it a lot better, than people did originally.
One reason is probably that people had 5-6 years of expectations built up around what would happen, and many were disappointed (when you play 3 games back to back, you sort of don't get that).
Second was a distinct lack of closure. The original game ended rather abruptly. A lot of scenes were added, including the evacuation scene when running towards the beam, because people had no idea what happened to their squad mates and if, or how they survived. The entire epilogue narrated (in your case by Hackett) was also absent , and a lot of dialogue between Shepard and the Catalyst wasn't there.
Also everyone that was disappointing with the ending took straight to BioWare Forums, and there was a ton of people there discussing back and fourth, about how lackluster it was.
BioWare released free DLC about 4 months after the premiere of ME3, called "Extended Cut", to deal with the backlash. And it was huge. You can imagine, when they make a massive DLC they didn't plan to do. There was even a hug petition to remake the entire ending. There were a buch of theories spawned by this ending, including the famous (of infamous) "Indoctrination Theory", which is on TH-cam and you should definitely watch.
Personally I both love and hate the ending. I like some of the things they tried to do, but it all comes out of left field when they introduce the Catalyst. If they wanted to do what they did, they should have laid the the groundwork since the first game. Instead they made a huge philosophical ending, with world changing consequences, that was very loosely based on some of the themes/ideas in the game.
The theme of inevitable conflict between organics and machines I think only appeared in ME3, and became the reason for everything.
Most people have the same reaction: "It doesn't make sense". Especially the kill everyone and turn them into Reapers to save organics from synthetics.
You could argue, that you can make almost anything believable (perhaps even that), but it takes a lot of work and thought, but most of all planning, and that (or lack thereof) is what ME suffers from most.
Also, if inside the Citadel, there is this collective Reaper intelligence, then how could the Proteans sabotage the it?
Before the appearance of the Catalyst, Shepard had agency, and he/she was driving events. After, Shepard is given permission and a choice by a "God", because "circumstances change".
I particularly dislike the Synthesis ending, because it changes the nature of all life in the galaxy is some unknown but enormous way, that is completely vague, and could be catastrophic, but ends up being a feel good ending when everyone is without a hint of cynicism, live happily ever after in perfect harmony. I also notice a lot of people like it now.
You should listen to Shepard in those other endings (the epilogues), because it sounds jarring and a little dystopian.
I hinted at this before, but IMO there either should have been 4 games, or ME2 should have been spent on preparing for the invasion. ME2 is where things go of the rails (because it is an almost completely self contained story), and you need a clumsy deus-ex machina to fix everything. And the threat is so huge that maybe you need it, but without the "lucky find in the Mars archives", and "starchild" (The Catalyst).

Congratulations! Finishing the first time is a big moment for lots of people. I used to be a die hard "destroy" player but i generally do synthesis now- i believe that literally no choice ends without 'blood on your hands' so to speak, but no ending is 'wrong'. the choice is yours. It's been a hell of a journey! I hope to see you watch the other endings as they are cool too.

  • @SirTayluh
    @SirTayluh 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Something to note about the destroy ending that may make the decision feel less uncertain. The Catalyst wasn't entirely correct about how destruction worked. It didn't permanently destroy anything, it just damaged them so severely they shut off galaxy wide. Nothing synthetic is lost, it just needs to be repaired, even if that may take varying amounts of time depending on the thing. Hell, just in the aftermath cutscenes you see small scale tech that's already been quickly repaired. Shuttles for the krogan, normandy opening doors almost immediately after and after some time taking off. Edi and the geth are, at the time of the end of the game, deactivated, absolutely, but they can be reactivated. We have a soft confirmation about this with geth being confirmed in the next games and destroy being widely considered the "canon" ending, among other evidence. I don't know how long it will take Edi to be repaired by those on the Normandy, but the Quarians, considering not only their new culture relies on the Geth so severely, but their suits being tech too and their long term health needing the Geth on some level, would probably jump straight into repairing everything. We see the Citadel being repaired and we have proof that organics have already figured out relay tech (Conduit on Ilos), honestly the only real loss synthetic wise long term would be the relays, considering how large scale a project they'd be to repair and that you need working ships and construction fleets to do so, but they are controlled by the Citadel, and we already repaired it on screen.
I don't want to make it sound like this end is sacrificeless, because it is not. This still sets all organics back a long time and all Synthetic repairs will take a decently large amount of time, and we lose all the guidance and knowledge the previous cycles processed through the loss of the Reapers, which we recall aren't exactly just an AI, but rather a Gestalt consciousness made up of all the living things harvested of a species. Harbinger was the mind of every Leviathan harvested forming consensus in one body and the human reaper would've been the same. It's closer to a multiple personality disorder Gravemind from halo than an actual terminator. The point of destroy, however is that you let the current living beings forge that future themselves. Harkening back to Legions conversation about why the Geth mostly rejected the reapers, paraphrasing. "The reapers offered us their knowledge, we refused. Accepting answers blinds you to alternatives, Sovereign said this itself "by using it, you develop along paths we desire." Geth will build our own future." I personally believe that it's a good thing to forsake that reaper knowledge in exchange for a bit brighter of an ending for the people you love. Not to shadow the other endings. You are essentially sacrificing yourself to speed up evolution for everything else. With destroy they'd get there eventually anyway, the catalyst said this itself. I think I saved a whole damn galaxy, I'm not giving up my new career as a Tali-mancer to speed up science a little. You could argue that with the "anything can be repaired" route that the reapers could be reactivated just the same, and you're right, I 100% believe its true (the dead but still indoctrinating thing we saw in Me2 where we met Legion was because the thing wasn't actually dead, just a vegetable.) However that dips into fanfiction, and given the culture that would sprout afterwards, i doubt anyone would actually try other than extremist groups or cults, for the most part, they would be abandoned and either deconstructed or yeeted into space as clean up occurs. I truly think the REAL sacrifice is losing the knowledge and minds of all the previous cycles, with the rest just being a timegate of repairing everything, as with the other 2 endings we get that from the reapers, whether as allies or as our puppets. Edi, the Geth, the quarians and galactic society via the relays are gone for now yes, but I truly think that's only a couple of years issue. Aside from the relays, its not like organics forgot how to build any of that. Edi was built solely by humans, mind you, and while yes it involves reaper tech, even if they needed new material for repairs, it's now everywhere and the original mechanics who made her didnt seem to have ill effects of making her. Hell, the upgraded Normandy guns you made in me2 are reaper tech the Turians developed off of Sovereign. It can be dabbled in so long as you don't interact with the Reaper itself as a whole unit or in any activated manner.
I know, more rambling and pages of text from yours truly, but I wanted to share why destroy isn't as bleak as it seems. It's not "everyone lived happily ever after with no cost", but the sacrifice you're making in Destroy isn't the one you think it is. It's a jump in evolution, not the lives of the Synthetics you know and love. It's partially confirmed, and this is next to no conjecture, but just pointing out things we already know to be true, just applied to other things they affect. You did great, the emotions you shared are nothing to be negative about. It's that emotion you showed that is what people watch for. This made us emotional, and seeing lets-players share that emotion is like sharing something you love with someone and them being into it as much as you. It was an amazing journey to witness, and yours had its own unique qualities, decisions and opinions that others differed from.

I was a bit late to see that final episode, but I must say, I've seen a lot of different playthrough, either in english or in my main language, and yours was definitely my favorite. Your way of playing (You're such a good shooter, way better than me x) ), exploring everything, being so caught in the lore, your way of putting yourself in others shoes which is pretty similar to me, your emotional moments that helped me relive the emotions I was originally used to, the fact that you stick to your choices because the fact that you made different choices that I usually played a great part in the fact that I loved this playthrough... That's all the first things I think about when I think about why I loved your playthrough!
I can't wait to see you on other games like Dragon Age and other decisions based game like Detroit :D

Oh boy, the edition. Holding the tears was more difficult seeing scenes from previous games.
You did good, child. You did good.

    Hey Kali!
Thanks so much for doing this playthrough. I've played through this trilogy countless times, but I find watching others play it so fun and interesting in terms of the choices they make.
You have in particular been a pleasure to watch as you think out loud major decisions and explain your reasoning while also taking the time to brush up on the lore through the codex. I don't know a lot of people who have played this game, so it's as if I can finally hear other's points of view on why they make specific choices. So thanks for that.🙏
This is by far my favourite game and you're the first person I've seen who has the exact same outlook as me on the Sythesis ending. As soon as I heard what it was about I knew I could never make that decision for an entire galaxy. I find it incredibly interesting how it's actually one of the more popular decisions though in the fanbase.
A little take away to make you feel better for the Destroy ending is that the AI child said that we'd have little difficulty rebuilding what was destroyed. So, the geth, Mass Relays and everything will be rebuilt in time. In terms of EDI, one can only hope we could somehow restart her up properly again. And, hopefully the Normany get back to Shepard in time (Liara knew with that smile of hers to the sky at the end).
However, glad you got the "perfect ending" (in my opinion). Here's hoping for something special in Mass Effect 4.🙌
I hope you can do a reaction to all things Mass Effect next (especially the ME4 trailer)! :D
Also, definitely think you'd have an absolute amazing time in the following games if you enjoyed this so much:
    - Baldur's Gate 3
    - Persona 3, 4, 5
    - Mass Effect Andromeda (lot's of controversy around this one, but I myself really enjoyed it)
    - Dragon Age (trilogy)
Best of luck for your next series! I'm sure you'll really enjoy Detroit Become Human.

Hello Kali! I started following you for this saga that I love and also to practice my English (I'm from Argentina). Although I didn't agree with some of your choices, I loved watching you discover this incredible universe. I hope that at least when you finish Andromeda you upload a video telling us your opinion. Greetings!

Major Coates was used in the first teaser and the first reveal trailer for ME3. The teaser was him sniping from a burned out building in an unnamed warzone. The reveal trailer showed it was Big Ben that he was holed up in. Fans waiting for ME3 knew from the trailers that Earth would be invaded. We didn't realize at the time that the unnamed soldier from the trailers would be the last new character we'd meet in the trilogy.
Most everybody has Javik use the memory shard their first playthrough.
When the Leviathans created the Catalyst, they simply turned it loose to complete its assigned task. They were completely blindsided and helpless when the Catalyst sicced its drones on them. Unlike EDI and even the Geth, the Catalyst did not learn alongside their creators for any length of time. It merely applied machine logic to the problem presented. As the Leviathans told you in the DLC, they did not think themselves vulnerable to the same flaws as the lesser species, and did not believe that the Catalyst could turn on them like it did. In essence, the Catalyst believes the created will always turn on their creators because it chose to turn on its own creators. Logically, then, all synthetics would go to war with organics.
Throughout all the cycles, wars would happen because one side would attack the other. It's not always because the created choose to rebel; it's the frictions caused by the differences in viewpoints. Organics attack each other all the time over difference of opinion. The Geth went to war only because the Quarians panicked over the Geth accidentally becoming sentient. And the Catalyst destroyed its creators...in order to stop synthetics from destroying their creators?
The Catalyst's solution was flawed from the beginning, but it seemed totally logical to itself. It lies to itself about what it does to organics, and I'm sure some of the other synthetic races throughout Mass Effect history came to the same logical sophistry.
The Catalyst may as well have tried to stop physics from working as try to stop the "chaos" of different species having different viewpoints.
If the Catalyst hadn't so brutally interrupted natural cycles of evolution, though, Synthesis would have eventually been possible during Leviathan's time, the first cycle. As it is, combining the Crucible and the Catalyst allows for the Synthesis evolutionary process to be sped up a few millenia. Some players think that Synthesis is somehow "forced" onto the galaxy in that ending, but it really is just speeding up the process a bit. The species in the human cycle are ready for it.
Besides, EDI narrates the Synthesis ending.
You should watch a video of all four choices (Synthesis, Control, Destroy, Reject) now that you've made your own choice; as well as all the "Gamerpoop" recommendations. Personally, I find Gamerpoop to be just too immature, and I make classier recommendations like _Mass Effect Hidden History: Are Videogames Art?_ and Malukah's tribute song _Reignite,_ as well as Miracle Of Sound's tribute songs _Take It Back, Commander Shepard,_ and _Normandy;_ but, to each their own.

@@VenomKpp You might have to hit every talking point with him from Samantha sending you to talk to him to the memorial wall. I don't know if hanging out for a drink in Purgatory is necessary to save him or if it is just an extra war asset. The only time he died on me was when I missed the memorial wall meeting.
