Yes. The quoted calories on a pack of crisps etc is always per serving which is a very small amount but if you aren't aware you will think you can eat a family size packet and only be getting 150 calories. Also if a serving size has less than a certain amount of trans fat they don't have to list it and can even say the product is 'no trans fats'
Yeah right! And its so misleading that, for example on cereals, the serving sizes vary between like 30 grams to 50 grams, so the calory count per serving isnt even really comparable! (why cant I spell english today smh)

100% agree ! I'm in the same place and it just seems so ridiculous to suggest a serving size to fit the entire population regardless of age, activity etc. ! Hope you're ok x
serving sizes are just there to give you a calorie count for that particular serving! you obviously have to adjust that to your body’s needs based you your workout and activity level!
High/slow metabolisms are a myth. She burns more calories either because she's super tall or because she moves more. Skinny people tend to underestimate how much they eat and naturally have a smaller appetite, while fat people tend to have the opposite.
@@wander1973 sure, obviously the metabolism varies based on height, weight and level of activeness. nothing new there. I'm not that tall so therefore I can not eat as much as someone that is. I still can be envious tho, can't I? So I am kind of confused at what your point is.
@@wander1973 I am an average height, eat more than my brother whose 2 heads taller and has a normal posture. bre ruth not a myth - I knew a young guy who could eat his weight in food every day . ( ok , exaggerating) but He wasn’t extremely active - just average . And He was very thin. He could never gain an ounce , and he tried. Metabolism is just the rate at which your body burns calories
@@michellep37 It is a myth. Men require more calories than women due to more muscle mass than women, even if the man isn't active or whatever. A man and woman, same height and weight, require different amounts of calories because women have higher body fat percentage. Js.
That’s actually 100% how it works. Serving sizes don’t mean you can’t eat more than one serving they’re tied to the food pyramid where you’re supposed to have so many servings of each type of food today. So you can eat all your servings of grains in one sitting if you want.
Kelsey Doyle what are you talking about? Serving sizes are the amount of calories and percentage of fat carbs and protein that one serving of food consists. So you can make sure you’re eating the correct amount of calories depending on weight and activity level, and so you can track the amount of each food group you’re eating because we all need different percentages of those.
Sar Bear Serving sizes are a portion of food. Multiple portions of food make up your daily consumption. Not sure where I lost you on that. Serving sizes will have associated nutritional value like the amount of carbs in a serving but the amount of carbs doesn’t define what a serving is. You’re supposed to eat multiple servings of grains, vegetables, fruits, protein, and fats per day. There’s no law that says you can’t eat 3 servings of fruit out of the recommended 5 per day during breakfast. Like I genuinely don’t know why you’re lost....
apparently pringles serving portion is *6 pringles* Whatttttttttt Edit: thanks for all the likes xx Edit 2: I’m srry if I got the serving portion wrong and people r offended by that lmao 😂
The serving size is 2 I only know because when I would bring a thing of Oreos for park picnic Thursdays I would bring a thing of Oreos and we would only get two Oreos each because if I had three I’d throw up
the "serving size" is just a unit of measure for that particular item packaged in that particular way--if that makes any sense. It is not a suggested portion size. It is just a way to know the calorie/nutritional break down for that unit of measure.
It's also a marketing tactic. For the food to seem healthier than it is by making the serving sizes super small so that the other numbers look better. Someone is way more likely to buy a container that says "80 calories per serving" than "250 calories per serving" even if the serving sizes aren't realistic.
as a person who struggles with an eating disorder and is always thinking way too much about portion sizes etc., it was really inspiring to hear you speak about how every body needs a different amount and see your reactions to the ridiculously small portion sizes. :) love you! xx
If I’m a male weighting 90kg my minimum daily caloric intake will be different from another male weighting 80 or 100kg so there’s no way the package could give a specific portion size for all people. Besides your BMR can and should be calculated based on several other details of one’s life such as amount of weekly exercise, height, weight, etc etc the BMR is the amount of calories your body uses to function in a regular day. So yeah, the package is not right for everyone and a 2000kcal diet is not the norm for everyone too :)
Marco Aurelio I never said that, all I said is the portion size is based on someone who eats 2,000 calories, which is often recommend amount, but I agree, everyone’s bodies are different and need different amounts of food
I’m type one diabetic so I use serving sizes to see how many carbs is I will be eating. So if I want chips and say it says 15 chips is 16 carbs, so if I want 30 chips it will be about 30 carbs.
For the people in the UK who don't get the confusion, it would be like if someone said "I'm going to eat ice cream" and then went and ate a chocolate bar. It just not the word used to describe dessert, it doesn't make sense to us. Ice cream is ice cream. I'm Australian by the way 😊
Well im from australia, we just say dessert as pudding is a type of dessert here lol, but its the same with how in usa you call your jam, jelly and your jelly, jello. Just called learning, if you don't understand look it up, great thing about having the internet hehe.
James Bolger why are you calling him an idiot. He might of not noticed the other comment. Like my friend doesn’t look at other comments she just writes them and moves on.
Serving sizes are ridiculous. Back when I had cereal I'd polish off a whole box in 3 or 4 sittings. I'd eat SO much of it, and the box said it had 12 portions 😳 Preposterous!
It's the way companies get around these food laws that say one person cant have this many calories in a portion. So they change the size of the portion to fit the calories
In the US, food labels usually say the servings are based on "a 2000 calorie diet." What many people don't realize is that a lot of people need more or less than 2000 calories. It's crazy!
Yes but 2000 is the average and so if you have 2000 diet and there are told how many % the food is of the daily goal, i think it's very helpful and also its easy to count more or less if you have another than 2000
The US food recommendations were based on experiments the US did to North Korean POWs during the Korean War in the 1950s. What is recommended is what was necessary to keep the POWs in average health, who did not do any work. Therefore, it really is bunk.
Alternatively, I've found if I eat the US food pyramid foods, and servings, I gain a ton of weight. Way too many carbs, I think. When I tried, I honestly had a hard time eating all those carbs at every meal. Like, take breakfast. The US wants you to eat a bowl of cereal in milk, have two pieces of toast with jelly and butter, a piece of fruit, and a glass of orange juice. Way too much carbs and sugar in that, and not near enough protein. I find I do best with one protein, one carb, and one or two veggies at every meal. Scrambled eggs with tomatoes and spinach and half a slice of toast is pretty perfect, at least for me. If you send your kids to school for breakfast here, they most likely give them a package of mini-muffins and a little thing of 1% milk.
@@lottaoinonen233 It definitely is helpful! But a lot of people don't realize that 2000 calories is only applicable to maybe half of the population. I've noticed some labels with numbers for a 2000 calorie diet and a 2500 calorie diet, and it's super helpful. Somebody tall-ish and young like Grace probably needs to eat closer to 2500.
Omg the mayo jar hahah! Yaaas, what you always say about eating what you want and however much and just your whole view on food is awesome! Another top quality vid as always 😎
The serving size is used as a measurement so you can calculate how much you can eat for your caloric intake. 1 serving is so and so calories but if you want more calories, consume 2 serving sizes.
english people: why do people get confused about our definition of pudding? the world: what is it then? english people: well, it's dessert in general but also what everybody else calls pudding. but it's also a baked good eaten savoury. but it's also some type of sausage. the world: *is confused* english people: it's not that hard really. yes, yes it is. and confusing.

Selah Grace she has a specific scale (I have the same one) which measure our the bowl..so you put the bowl on it and tap erase and then you put the food in and it measures it out
Hi Crackle. You ate an entire day like me with anorexia. THANK YOU for finding it ridiculous! Extremely helpful for me and my silly perspectives on food.
You should do a day of eating what your recommended calories are based on your height, age, weight and activity. Just google tdee ( total daily energy expenditure) calculator and see what it says, or try looking at your basic metabolic rate!
For me the serving sizes look fairly normal, but I used to count calories in 2020 and 2021 when I lost over 30 kilos and the recommendation really helped me understand that I had way too much of certain foods in the past :)
You, my dear, are gifted with a very high metabolism. I so wish I could eat like you. Could you do a video when you are over 55 and let us know what you are eating. I'll be waiting.
Joseph Weir she’s not gifted with anything except being young. she’s 21. everyone knows that you have a faster metabolism in your early to mid 20’s. wait until she hits 30 when it slows down.
I’ve never been one to believe that the serving size is like an ACTUAL serving size, but more of a gauge to help you track your calories. There is no universal correct serving size, companies are just required by law to list ingredients/calories/etc on their products
Recommended portion sizes are a way for companies producing refined food to market their products as "less than x calories" or "less than x grams of fat" or "less than x grams of sugar". Basically it means they can use the portion size to make their product look better than it is. They will end their claim with an asterisk, and in fine print it will say "per portion" or "for 1 portion size". You then have to check the back of the packaging to see what they consider a portion size. If a company makes the recommended portion size smaller they can use that to make their product sound healthier than it actually is. Portion sizes and their calorie, carb, protein and fat count make it difficult to compare foods. If you want to compare foods in the best way possible, check the nutritional info for 100gr of that product and see if that in any way influences how much you eat of that food. Portion sizes are also often based on a 2000kcal diet, and often within a certain framework from nutritional guidelines. But afaik producers don't necessarily have to work with those standards (this may depend on the country), and can make up their own portion sizes. For some items nutritional guidelines may have no recommended portion size because the food is either so niche or so unhealthy that they do not recommend you eat it at all, or all they said about the product is "consume sparingly" without a recommended portion size.
Or because the product is healthy!! Or just because they're too lazy to write it out. In my country most things didn't have portion seizes 10 years ago but it's coming more and more. Which is disturbing for us trying to be positive to food and not get stuck in eating disordered thinking again :-(
@@SamirCCat Note : I speak from the perspective of the Netherlands, but similar things are happening in the UK and the US. I didn't mean to say that manufacturers use that deceptive tactic on all foods. The problem is that they do use it on many foods that just plainly are not healthy, which is obvious to people who know a little bit about nutrition but sadly the general public does not. Now you could argue, from an anti eating disorder perspective, that there are no good or bad foods. Whilst I find that a fairly wholesome mindset it also isn't 100% true. Take for example breakfast cereals, granola bars, baby food and "breakfast biscuits" (a type of cookie that is supposed to be able to replace a regular breakfast, it's marketed at people who don't like to have breakfast), those are the type of items that manufacturers use the deceptive tactic on the most in my country. There are different ways to make and market these products, often there is too much sugar and too little fiber in them and it would be better to just eat a sandwich. They typically try to represent their products as having less sugar, having more fruit, more fiber and more vitamins and minerals. For the sugar content they use the portion size tactic, for things like fruit content or fiber they try to make you think there's more of it in there than it really is, and there have been some issues with incorrect fortification practices regarding vitamins and minerals. They give these products a sort of image of health, and most customers fall for it. Registered dietitians already knew these products weren't as good as advertised, so they were recommending against them in their practice. Consumer agencies picked up on it but couldn't really do anything (like a lawsuit) against these huge international corporations but they made sure to televise it so the public was more aware. Then the Dutch equivalent of the FDA picked up on the deception and made some of the manufacturers pull some of the items from the shelves. At most these corporations got a slap on the wrist by the government. They have to pay a fine, but that's small change for them. The problem to fight this kind of misleading marketing is that it often falls within a legal grey area, and some of it is actually breaking the law. Another problem is that these corporations keep doing the same thing but with other or new products. When the government finds out the corporation has to pay a fine and pull the product, but the fine is nothing compared to the profits they make from the misleading marketing so they don't really have an incentive to stop. Attempts have been made to raise consumer awareness. For example the government is trying to find some kind of system that can quickly show a customer with no knowledge of nutrition if a product is healthy or not. For example they've tried the "stop light system" where they use red, green and yellow to highlight good or bad aspects (judged by Dutch national nutrition guidelines) of the product on the front of the box. Health conscious people would then know to avoid products with a lot of the red brackets on the boxes. But this system isn't working well yet, so I think it is much easier to just read the ingredients and nutritional value per 100gr.
@@SamirCCat Products that are already healthy don't need that kind of deceptive marketing. That is why you are not likely to see this kind of marketing on fresh fruit and vegetables. This was never about healthy food, but producers are trying to make them seem more healthy than they really are because if you can convince a customer that a cookie is not a treat but a healthy breakfast option they will buy more of it.
@@itsalwayshalloweenexceptwh5118 I understand what you mean however I have great difficulties imagining people know absolutely nothing about nutrition. In my country (Sweden) our problems with overweight is increasing but we still get education in school about nutrition and health etc. At least when I went there, haha... It's sad to see how big corporations bend the law, but they do in so many ways, like not paying taxes because the base is in another country etc. They have no moral at all in their body, they just think about money. It's sad. Lastly, what's healthy food for some isn't always healthy for others. I have a stomach illness that makes it very difficult for me to eat fibres, and I always check the fibre ingredients to see it's not too HIGH. There are people who have troubles with underweight for different reasons, and for them eating a snack with a lot of sugar/fruit is good because it's rich in calories. Basically, if you don't have any vitamin or mineral dificencies and have a healthy BMI, don't think about food too much. Use common sense, don't eat 10 cookies every day, but don't be AFRAID of food and using a red light-system in your country seems like a HORRIBLE signal that some food is forbidden and that is very unhealthy thinking. The people taking in the propaganda about healthy food is not the overweight people that need it, but the young guys and girls with low self esteem and body dysphoria. It feeds right into the increase in eating disorders. Having marketing some food as red is a horrible idea and I hope no young impressionable minds take too much damage. The overweight people are still going to buy the sugary stuff because they crave it on an emotional level as a coping mechanism from stress/depression/anxiety. Instead of working with the actual food overweight people need to work on their relationships TO food and their emotional cooping skills. Sorry, this was long. I hope you understand. No food is bad in the right, moderate amounts. Never be afraid of food.
@@SamirCCat You have very good points, especially about underweight people who might benefit from the calorie dense, sugar laden foods that are generally not a good choice for the general population. I find it difficult to imagine so many dutch people are ignorant about nutrition too, but the government thinks it's necessary to protect them from misleading marketing. I do know that a lot of people still think a sugary cereal is a healthy breakfast. No thoughts about balance at all. The average dutch adult has a BMI of 25.4 so obviously something is going wrong, either in education or food culture. Very few people are underweight here so for the average person seeing these sugary breakfasts as something that is appropriate and even healthy for every day consumption isn't a good thing. I'm not saying that these items should be banned, but they should be seen in a proper light. Namely that they are, for the average person (who is slightly overweight and consuming too much refined sugar already) not the best choice for every day. People have been brainwashed by marketing, for example they see a regular biscuit/cookie as a treat that you could have with a cup of tea or coffee, but they think a granola bar is much healthier (because of the image marketing has given to it) when in reality if you were to compare the nutritional profile for both foods it could even be that that granola bar is worse. When I was in school it was in the 80's and 90's, we did have a little education about food but a lot of it has been overhauled now. I don't know what they are teaching currently, but probably a more up to date version of dutch nutritional guidelines. Here's a link to a picture of the stoplight system that didn't do so well in my country, I added some spaces so youtube doesn't eat the links; stoplight system at the bottom of a can of beverage https: // joybouwmeester . com / wp - content / uploads / 2019 / 02/ data 40929219-3863f3 . jpg ? x10141 an example of the system (on the right in the picture) how it would apply to breakfast cereals https: // www . rtlz . nl/ sites/default/files/styles/liggend/public/content/images /2018/10/20/ Schermafbeelding % 202018-10-20 % 20om%2012.02.17 . png?itok = 7AybIbB0 It didn't really work so they are not using it on products currently.
I think the "serving size" for food is to represent the amount of ingredients are in each serving size. For example if the box says 15g of sugar per serving size, and the serving size says "2 cookies" It's trying to inform that there is 15g of sugar every 2 cookies... makes sense?
FexerRexer yeah what I mean is that you use the portion size to find the recommended calories, sugar, sodium, etc for your weight, height, and age. Like I have a disease where I sometimes have to what what I eat. If the serving size for 3 cookies has 12 grams of sugar I will eat that and not the whole box. Don’t know if I explained that right. What I meant is that you use the serving size, but you don’t necessarily eat like that (although I sometimes do)
I've always seen servings sizes is a way to track calories and nutrition easier rather than saying "This is how much someone should eat". I'm a relatively small person but I'd starve to death if I tried to live off serving sizes.
You could do another video where you only eat foods that have been grown/produced in Britain fora while. So like no imported fruit/veg/grain/meat and if you want to make it really hard, you could also include herbs/spices/condiments so like only salt from england (if there is any), herbs from the garden etc. People have done this for Germany as well and this was quite interesting. Good luck ;-)
I truly adore everything you post! Your personality is the best and I love how genuine you are. Thank you for always being so food positive and just positive in general.
I agree that serving sizes are usually ridiculous and that everyone should eat however much they need. But I did recently learn that serving size information is actually really useful for people who are diabetic or have dietary restrictions, because it makes it easier to know how much sugar for example, is in four cookies.
they only make serving size so they can put a low calorie count on the package

High/slow metabolisms are a myth. She burns more calories either because she's super tall or because she moves more. Skinny people tend to underestimate how much they eat and naturally have a smaller appetite, while fat people tend to have the opposite.
@@wander1973 sure, obviously the metabolism varies based on height, weight and level of activeness. nothing new there.
I'm not that tall so therefore I can not eat as much as someone that is. I still can be envious tho, can't I?

An oreo serving sizes aren’t how much you should eat it’s just the most even way to divide the nutrition facts
An oreo it’s so that you can take leftovers home and eat them for lunch or dinner the next day
the "serving size" is just a unit of measure for that particular item packaged in that particular way--if that makes any sense.

Anastasia Raffaella what piece of shit keyboard do u have most people use QWERTY
The serving size is the measure for the caloric count, doesn’t mean that it’s the amount one’s supposed to eat
Not really, it's often specified that it's a specific portion for an adult
It’s the portion based on a 2,000 calorie diet.

It is so interesting!!

Here's a link to a picture of the stoplight system that didn't do so well in my country, I added some spaces so youtube doesn't eat the links;
stoplight system at the bottom of a can of beverage https: // joybouwmeester . com / wp - content / uploads / 2019 / 02/ data 40929219-3863f3 . jpg ? x10141
an example of the system (on the right in the picture) how it would apply to breakfast cereals https: // www . rtlz . nl/ sites/default/files/styles/liggend/public/content/images /2018/10/20/ Schermafbeelding % 202018-10-20 % 20om%2012.02.17 . png?itok = 7AybIbB0
It didn't really work so they are not using it on products currently.
I think the "serving size" for food is to represent the amount of ingredients are in each serving size. For example if the box says 15g of sugar per serving size, and the serving size says "2 cookies" It's trying to inform that there is 15g of sugar every 2 cookies... makes sense?
Jagger Tucker but it’s also recommend to eat the serving size tho. At least that’s what I learned from health class and healthy youtubers
They add serving sizes to make the amount of sugar and other unhealthy stuff seem like there’s less
"Ok that is breakfast, done... and I am so hungry " lmfaaooo

I truly adore everything you post! Your personality is the best and I love how genuine you are. Thank you for always being so food positive and just positive in general.
:) have a great evening!
serving sizes don't matter if you just eat a lot of different foods with small serving sizes!
Oreos serving size is 2 in the lunchbox packets, and that's why I take 3 packs🤷🏾♀️🤷🏾♀️
I agree that serving sizes are usually ridiculous and that everyone should eat however much they need. But I did recently learn that serving size information is actually really useful for people who are diabetic or have dietary restrictions, because it makes it easier to know how much sugar for example, is in four cookies.
