Absolutely wonderful to see how you plan your fiber to FO process! Thank you so much for sharing!
I completely agree. Planning is a very very important part of the process. It takes most of the guesswork out so you can more easily enjoy the making of the finished object 🧶

Good Morning. I do not need a wheel, I do not need a wheel. You are making me miss having a wheel. I love knitting/weaving with yarn that I have made. Using yarn I've made gives the project an extra feeling of warmth.

Absolutely SING IT, sister! Gauge is a shifty thing and so many people place WAY too much importance on it. I hack the math on almost every single pattern I knit because my gauge is mine...and the sweater is mine. So why stress myself out trying to make something mine into something that is representative of someone else? I love listening to you talk people through spinning and knitting, you are setting people FREE. Keep it going!

Tahzi!!! This is so serendipitous. I literally had just started the first spindle of my first large project spin. I have 16oz of manx loughtan/silk blend that is very special to me. I used the first spindle to sample - soooo fun you get to knit up a bit of yarn right away!!! And i realized Ive been spinning my singles "backwards" (counterclockwise on my drop spindle, then plying clockwise). So im gonna try to spin clockwise this time and ply counter and then compare. I feel like a real spinner now. Thanks for the technical vibes today, it was perfectly timed

I reeeally want to do a sweater spin but am so inconsistent between days and bobbins and am afraid of shifting from the spinning I do now (which is just for joy, all of it) to leaning into predictability for a sweater spin. But it will happen! I know it will, at some point, when I can brace myself against falling into the pit of decision-paralysis and perfectionism.

And also thank you for a more mundane demo of something that has vexed me: how to tie a knot in a playback sample without all the twist escaping. I have been doing chaos spinning, I just start spinning and we'll see what kind of yarn I end up with. For the most part, I've only ever done two ply yarns, and braids plied with itself. I saw the new traveler shawl and saw that Andrea did three braid plied together and immediately started spinning for that. I of course have not sampled or done anything to make sure that I get the yarn I want (especially fun since I've never made a three ply). But as you say, it's a shawl, so... whatever. At some point I'm sure I'll start taking notes and actually trying to improve my spinning, but for now, I'm just getting more skeins under my belt to get the feel of things. It's worked out surprisingly well, but I don't know that I'd be consistent enough for a sweater spin without some actual notes, sampling, and work.

Thank you for all the wonderful tips! Would you recommend sampling for everything you spin, even if it's just random braids or small amounts? I'm still getting the hang of drafting in general and getting consistent singles, and I never know how to take notes.
It's so obvious how passionate you are about spinning when you talk about it. It's a joy to listen to. You're a fantastic teacher! I'm nowhere near a sweater amount, but I'm holding onto all of this for my next spin.

    • @stitchesandstarlight

I don’t sample for my one offs but I also have worked with these fibers for some time and I treat the small one off skeins as sample projects anyway. If you’re still learning, I would take notes on your ratio, on the WPI of your finished yarn and make control cards with your singles and ply back tests and then continue to build control cards.
