"Utah in the Movies" From the Flickers to Digital Magic
Lecture was held at the Boeing Auditorium 121 Udvar-Hazy, Utah Tech University Thurs. Feb. 15, 2024 @ 7PM
This lecture was delivered by Utah Native Phil Tuckett.
He is a 53-year veteran in film production. This presentation includes film clips and photos illustrating Utah's influence in the development of the movie industry, from the silent era to the multimillion-dollar blockbusters of today.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER: Phil Tuckett
In a 38 year career as a producer/director/writer/editor/cinematographer with NFL Films, Phil Tuckett developed a distinctive style of documentary film making that led to 30 individual Emmy Awards. Tuckett produced critically acclaimed sports specials such as "Autumn Ritual", "NFL Symfunny", "25 Years of Sports Illustrated". Tuckett ventured outside the sports arena with the Emmy Award winning "Blood From A Stone", a docu-movie for The History Channel. In 2008, Tuckett was offered a position at Dixie State College in St. George, Utah where he had attended as a student in 1964. He created the first ever film program for Dixie students. Over the next 16 years, he taught and directed the Dixie State Digital Film Degree Program and worked with his students to produce seven full length documentaries about the American Southwest that is called "The High Desert Chronicles". Tuckett also founded and for 12 years directed the acclaimed Docutah International Film Festival that celebrates the art of documentary filmmaking.
This lecture is part of the "Crossroads" lecture series. Crossroads: Change in Rural America is part of Museum on Main Street, a collaboration between the Smithsonian Institution and Utah Humanities, touring in partnership with Silver Reef Museum | Crossroads: Change in Washington County. "Crossroads. Change in Rural America" is a Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition that provokes fresh thinking and sparks conversations about the future and sustainability of rural communities. The exhibit will be hosted at the Silver Reef Museum | Ghost Town in Leeds, UT from March 9 to April 28, 2024.
