Wise words indeed Tim. I’m 65 and retired now living back in Laurel MS. I left the family trucking business in my 20s and then move away to Ohio and ended up in Alaska for over 20+ years. My worst fear was how my dad felt about me leaving his home made, successful dream company. Years later we had “The” discussion about me leaving. He finally put me at ease by telling me he understood why I left. The trucking company was his dream, not mine. His pride in me was watching me pursue my dream and not his. He never got to see me achieve my total success but I know he knows how well I made it. Oh, and Happy Birthday to you.

Love this video I am 23 and work for a tree company I did not start out doing tree work. Before I was here I was at a warehouse for truck parts and I was absolutely miserable packing boxes all day. I knew I wanted to do tree work and as I got a vocal about it everybody in my life pretty much clowned me! I finally got a position at a small residential company and I put in my two weeks notice at work and went to this company. I lasted one week at this company and thankfully my boss at the warehouse took me back. This was some of the hardest times of my life at this job because people made fun of me all the time for not having the guts to do it and come back to the warehouse. I still held onto my dream even when everyone doubted me and put in a bunch of applications I did a bunch of weekend test runs with companies open to find one that sticks and after months I finally found a nice company that is training me and paying me pretty good !

So true! While I still have my normal career which pays very well, I have also built my own business on the side that is almost as lucrative now. I am 60 now, If I had when after my passion early on I could have made it but I was afraid to take the risk and opted for the seemingly ease nice paycheck and settled for that when I should have immediately invested it in my passion. I could have had a well established business and working for myself at 30 instead of 60.

Do not spend your life building someone else’s dream. I did that until I was 45, I made a lot of employers rich all promising me they will take me to the top. I am now 48 and the last 3 years have been the best years of my life. I started my own mechanical company 3 years ago. Stop chasing the carrot someone else is holding. Grow your on garden.

I will be 61 June 25th. Been a mechanic 40 years. Started my own business 11 years ago at 50 years old. Hard road at first. 12 employees today and doing well. Now getting into land clearing on the side which I enjoy more than anything. If you enjoy it. It's not work. Plan to let someone younger take over shop and I will run my machines and enjoy life. Should have took the chance a long time ago.

Happy 51st birthday. By the way my daughter turns 50 in June. I am not sure how I got a daughter that old! Great points made here. I could have played it safe and got a job at General Motors, my father-in-law could have got me in repairing machinery. But I didn't want the confinement of working in a factory. I wanted to work on cars. Because of my work ethic I was able to continue to work my self up from washing cars to becoming Fixed operations manager. I spent 45 years in the business. In that time my employer paid for over 4000 hours of schooling. Tim I have watched you on TH-cam for a long time. The one thing that impresses me more that your work ethic is your willingness to help other people. What goes around comes around both good and bad. In your case you have been blessed because of your generosity. Have a great year.

Happy birthday Tim. Thank you for posting this video. It is so insitefull and true. I am sending a link to this video to my Grandson and I will encourage him to sit quietly and watch it, listen to it, and absorb the wisdom you share. Take care. Edit to add: I think you should edit this video into a "fireside" chat. The title "Do not be me" is perfect. Trim off the intro about the air compressor and just have the Fatherly talk. You have presented it so well I wish all young people could hear it. Post it everywhere you can to reach young people. Thanks again.

Happy Birthday Tim. Wiser words have not been spoken. The key is to take that first step. Sure you want to plan. Sure you want to have the right timing and the right people but, don’t wait or plan so long that you miss opportunity when it shows up. Ready or not take that first step. I did when I was 24. I wasn’t the smartest manager of my time but it was my time! I made mistakes and learned from them. I’m retired now with few regrets. I have enjoyed watching you these past couple of years (I have a Cottontop tee). I so appreciate the example you have portrayed on your channel and the Christian values that I tried to exemplify in my business you have expressed so wonderfully in yours. Keep on keepin on man! Later tater!

Happy Birthday Tim! Very wise words as I am one of those guys stuck in a job I am afraid to leave (though I don’t hate it I just don’t love it) just turning 51 like you 2 months ago. I started doing tree work part time with my cousin and our buddy 4 years ago and absolutely love it. I wish I had started when I was a younger man as it would probably have been my career though sometimes doing something full time changes your love of it. Enjoy your Birthday Tim🎉

Happy Birthday Tim. Great words of advice and i would also add that you don't have to make huge leaps. I too am not a huge gambler and thats alright. You can always start out slow doing things on the weekend, and rent equipment or buy used, and try and get a foothold established in that industry you want to be in. If it doesn't pan out you can sell off the equipment and usually recoup most of your money. I work in an office and my channel is devoted to my side projects/business which is me trying to find a secure backup to my office job for now and maybe one day becoming my primary job. But most importantly its things i enjoy like tree work and excavating. It does also afford me time to work with my dad who helps out and that may be something that you can't put a price on.

Ah a spring Chick my friend. I'm 75 running towards another with fingers crossed. Sage advice. Remember next job pays the same or more and might add a number of skill sets. Learn how to sell yourself what you have done and your upward goals. Forget about grades in school. If you did high school you did it. if you did some college - say some college.

Thats good advice Tim, very well said. I did take some risk with my work, certainly not as much as others. I can truly say I enjoy what I do for a living. I was very lucky to find my calling. I do heavy commercial & industrial HVAC. Another sound thing id say is do not be afraid to try. I made it where I am because I wasn’t afraid to take on some jobs that scared others or they didn’t want it.

Their are many people who be great entrepreneurs but the big elephant in the room is health insurance. Even the marketplace for the affordable card act is a hurdle. Too many money people that don't touch sick people stuffing their pockets with cash. My wife is a pediatrician with 30 + years. She has made us a comfortable living but makes no where close to what the CEOs of hospitals, health systems, drug companies, medical supply companys etc. That needs to change for more young people to find their real self. Glad you were able to make leap. 👍
