Good evening. I watched your two videos about the must-do's and must-knows when pursuing a career as a curriculum developer. I have always believed that people's paths cross for a reason. And now I see why I've been drawn to your videos. As you know from the comments I've made for your other videos, much of what you have shared is very helpful to me. I didn't know until now that you are a curriculum developer. I have a M.S. Degree in Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment that I earned 7 years ago in hopes of working at the various public school districts in that capacity. My bachelor's degree is in Exceptional Education and I'm certified in Elementary Education, Middle Grades English and English 9 - 12. I also have a business degree. With that said, I plan to retire in the next three years and I'd like to continue writing curriculum in other areas aside from TPT. I'd like your input on my chances of establishing a connection with a curriculum company and some company's you would suggest.
Hi Michelle! I am excited to hear that you are interested in a career in curriculum development! There are a lot of opportunities available for people who are creative and passionate about helping teachers and students. I am unable to share lists of my clients and curriculum companies that I work with. If you are interested in getting started, I recommend that you do what I shared in this video by getting onto job sites and websites for curriculum companies that you are interested in working for, and searching for jobs. As I mention in this video, it does take a lot of time in the beginning to find jobs and build relationships, but it does get much easier with time. If you're willing to put in the work up front, you can definitely find curriculum jobs and be successful in this field!

Thank you, this was a very insightful video. I was curious about what's the process for getting curriculum licensed and published so it can be available for schools? The curriculum I created has SEL framework.
Hello. This is a very informative video, thank you for it! I wanted to ask if you think it’d be possible to start a career in curriculum design/writing if I don’t have solid teaching experience?
Thanks for watching! I always recommend that educators spend at least two years in the classroom before moving into curriculum development. It is impossible to know what is truly helpful for teachers and students if you haven't been the person on the other side who is using and teaching curriculum on a daily basis.
Hi Martha! Thanks for watching and commenting. Best of luck to you on your curriculum journey! You can learn more about my experience in curriculum development and how I got started with this video: th-cam.com/video/CNKhNN3F5sM/w-d-xo.html
Hi Meghan, Thank you so much for making this video. I have been teaching for a few years, but I am ready to leave the classroom. I've been kind of depressed any time I think of not being able to get out of teaching. I've been looking into getting a Masters in curriculum development, but have been super worried that I will just be putting myself in a world I don't understand. This video helped me feel much better about my decision. One question- I know you talk about working as a contractor, and also for companies. Is there a way to only work for a company, or is this just how this field works? I am not sure I am ready or able to run my own company.
Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting! Yes, I know many people who just contract. It may be helpful to still pursue a Masters degree though. A lot of the companies I work with require a masters degree and valid teaching certificate.
Awesome Video! I am not looking to become a curriculum developer, BUT I am looking to publish a curriculum that I’ve developed. How do I go about doing that?
Hi De'Erica! Thanks for watching and commenting. If you've written your own curriculum, I encourage you to self publish. If you go to a publisher, they are going to take a big chunk of your profits.
@@Vestals21stCenturyClassroom thank you for your awesome video and for all the helpful comments you've put out on your channel. I'm also interested in self publishing my own curriculum work - have you self published any of your curricula? Any suggestions or feedback on reliable platforms for self publishing? Ps. Happy 2022!!
Thank you so much! I found this extremely helpful as I plan the next step of my career. Almost everything checks out for me except perhaps the first point. As an ambivert, I don't think I could handle THAT much interpersonal isolation or lack of student interaction. There must be some sort of position to be had which is curriculum design - adjacent that requires direct testing or classroom observation & research; or teaching new curricula to educators. Or even more time consulting in person with legislators, school boards, companies, etc. Are you aware of any roles that would balance my love of metal-level edu research & creative (design) writing with my excellent coaching skills? Thank you much, in advance.
Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting! I have chosen to go the route of owning my own curriculum company, which does mean I am often working independently. If you are interested in curriculum jobs that would give you more interaction with others, I recommend applying for curriculum jobs within school districts or the DOE. In those positions, you are usually working alongside a team. Good luck!
Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment. I am not sure I understand the question you are asking. Would you mind explaining your question a bit more. Most companies won't take on people to write curriculum for a subject that they are unexperienced in.
When creating curriculum, who own's it? When you create it, can it be shared with multiple clients or once the client has it, is it their's and you can't sell it to anyone else?
Hi Danielle! That's a great question! Ownership of curriculum varies. When working with other companies, they will specify ownership of the content you create when you sign a contract. Typically, when creating for someone else, they have ownership of the work because they are compensating you for it. If you personally create curriculum and sell it, you can sell it to as many people as want because you own it. When creating your own curriculum, it is important to include copyright and terms of use information with your work so that the people you sell to know that they cannot redistribute your work.
@@Vestals21stCenturyClassroom Thank you. As I enter into this, I will have to make sure to create clear contractual arrangements. This is great information!
@@danielledrogalis2699 Yes, always make sure to read your contracts carefully before you sign and ask questions about anything you don't understand or that you disagree with. I can't stress that enough. Companies are always looking out for their best interests and it is important that you look out for yourself and your business. I've definitely turned down certain opportunities because I did not agree with the terms laid out in the contracts.
Hi Meghan...Pls advice us on professional growth aspects in this field. Could you also please share books or links that we should refer to be updated with latest information. Thanks so much 😊
Hi! It is difficult to refer to just one resource as curriculum and teaching are constantly changing. Referring to a variety of sources is key/ I regularly check my state's DOE website for state trainings and professional development. I also regularly attend trainings offered by the companies that I work for. Keeping in constant contact with those who are in the classroom is also key.
Awesome Thank you so much! I looking to change my career from Teacher to curriculum writer for computer science for kids especially in the coding area. May I know what tool should I use or learn best strategies to write the curriculum? Is there a way I can volunteer somewhere to learn first?
Hi! Thanks for watching and congratulations on pursuing a career as a curriculum developer. I truly can't imagine doing anything else. I don't have any particular tools I used to learn, but it is helpful to know as many different practices and methodologies as possible because different companies/districts/schools, etc. all have specific ones they use. I recommend taking time to research as many practices and methodologies that relate to the content area you specialize in as possible. I also find having a strong understanding of child development and learning styles is key. Over the years, I have found that experience is the best teacher. When I started out, I always tried to work with and surround myself with people who were better than me. I learned so much just getting to work alongside them. Good luck to you!
What national standards exist for developing curriculum for adult education, i.e., college-level courses or training courses for professionals in a given field? I’m not even sure if this is a dumb question, but I’d like some guidance on what standards I should for to ensure compliance with whatever may be applicable. Thank you in advance!

Second, do you think that we have to get higher education such as PhD if we want to be curriculum developer? Always happy to hear back from experts. thx.
Hi! Thanks for watching and commenting. While I do think a degree in education is necessary, I think the level of degree depends on what type of work you want to do in curriculum. I have found for many of the jobs I work on, at least a master's degree is needed.
Thanks, Laura! I hope this information is helpful if you are considering getting into curriculum development. If you ever have any additional questions, feel free to reach out!
I’m now a library media specialist. I’ve been out of the classroom for 4 years now. I’d love to attend a training on current teaching trends and strategies! Anyone know how I can do that?
Thanks for watching and for the sweet comment! Yes, I do recommend that you get a teaching certificate in at least one state. Most curriculum and textbook companies require a teaching certificate and some experience in a classroom.
This depends on who the teacher edition is for. When working with textbook publishers, a template is always provided. When creating teacher editions for my own curriculum, I create everything myself.

Good luck to you as you work to grow your curriculum business!
Thank you, this was a very insightful video. I was curious about what's the process for getting curriculum licensed and published so it can be available for schools? The curriculum I created has SEL framework.
Hi Vito! There are lots of routes you can go. You can self publish or contact a publisher.
Hello. This is a very informative video, thank you for it!
I wanted to ask if you think it’d be possible to start a career in curriculum design/writing if I don’t have solid teaching experience?
Thanks for watching! I always recommend that educators spend at least two years in the classroom before moving into curriculum development. It is impossible to know what is truly helpful for teachers and students if you haven't been the person on the other side who is using and teaching curriculum on a daily basis.
it is not an easy route to go through, but the way you explain thing sound like one can try to switch to it, but is not an overnight success.
Hi Martha! Thanks for watching and commenting. Best of luck to you on your curriculum journey! You can learn more about my experience in curriculum development and how I got started with this video: th-cam.com/video/CNKhNN3F5sM/w-d-xo.html
Hi Meghan,
Thank you so much for making this video.
@@blessederic4743 I sell my self-created curriculum through my personal website.
this is so helpful.... can we communicate to ask you more of my personal questions????
Good luck!
Thank you for your informative video
Hey,pls suggest some good course on curriculum development

Awesome Thank you!
What national standards exist for developing curriculum for adult education, i.e., college-level courses or training courses for professionals in a given field?
I’m not even sure if this is a dumb question, but I’d like some guidance on what standards I should for to ensure compliance with whatever may be applicable.
Thank you in advance!
Hi, Thank you far sharing your excellent details here.
I am a PhD student in curriculum and sport pedagogy and would like to know your perspective on how our carrier will be in future.
I have found for many of the jobs I work on, at least a master's degree is needed.
very very good info! thanks for sharing!!!
Thanks, Laura! I hope this information is helpful if you are considering getting into curriculum development. If you ever have any additional questions, feel free to reach out!
What company do you work for? Do you know of any companies who are hiring for curriculum developers? I seem to not be able to find any to apply for.

I’m now a library media specialist. I’ve been out of the classroom for 4 years now. I’d love to attend a training on current teaching trends and strategies! Anyone know how I can do that?
You may want to check out your state DOE website. They often list trainings and professional developments throughout the state where you live.
I would love to be a curriculum developer
Can you please help me write an after school program? Or do you have someone that can write me an after school program curriculum?
This is awesome, you are very pretty! I have a masters degree, do I need to have a teaching certificate?
Thanks for watching and for the sweet comment! Yes, I do recommend that you get a teaching certificate in at least one state. Most curriculum and textbook companies require a teaching certificate and some experience in a classroom.
can you recommend someone to help me develop a curriculum for a new course
Is there a template that you follow as you create a teacher edition? Or do you create each page with visuals and charts yourself?
This depends on who the teacher edition is for. When working with textbook publishers, a template is always provided. When creating teacher editions for my own curriculum, I create everything myself.

Does curriculum development require a lot of public speaking? I like writing lesson plans but get really nervous presenting in front of a classroom
Hi Hope! Thanks for watching and commenting. Curriculum development does not require any public speaking. Depending on the position, you may also do teacher trainings. But, this is not required and there are plenty of positions that do not require teacher trainings.
Wow... excellent 👌
Hi Subla! Thanks for watching and commenting.

This sounds more like a pity party, whining about how hard being a teacher is. This whining is detrimental to the delivery of an otherwise good content.
I am awed by your transition. I pinged you on Instagram. Please respond....
Hi Saiby! Thank you for watching and leaving such a sweet comment. I just read your IG message. As I mention in this video, it takes time to get curriculum jobs in the beginning and you often have to start by taking jobs that do not pay as much until you build a reputation in the field. The big thing is to keep searching for and applying for jobs every day until you land something. I share all my tips for finding curriculum jobs in this video and in my video about how I became a curriculum developer. You can find the other video here: th-cam.com/video/CNKhNN3F5sM/w-d-xo.html
If you follow all the steps I share in these videos, you will find something although it might take time. Don't give up and believe in yourself! Anything is possible when you keep trying and believe you can make it happen.
@@Vestals21stCenturyClassroom Thank you so much for replying. I absolutely loved all the videos that I have watched till now. Trust me I am following just what you mentioned. I need to just put it out in open. Thank you so much for your positive feedback. You are a role model, seriously!!
