      Brett works for the Chargers organization. Take it into account. I also feel the Raiders did not deserve Tom Telesco. He was with the Chargers for 11 seasons and never won a single division title. The Raiders simply deserved better.

    The Raiders will be overlooked until they prove it. But if Luke Getsy is able to do what Shane Waldron did with Geno Smith, to Gardner Minshew/AOC, this team should be legit. I am not sold on Getsy yet. Lets see if he can prove himself as well.

      I mean, Shane was good that year but a lot of it was Geno playing out of his mind. I like Minshew, he deserves a chance to start, but he has nowhere near Geno upside.
      That being said, Minshew is a much better fit for Getsy than Fields. With better supporting cast talent, more buy-in from players, and some minor growth from Getsy, they can have a solid year together.

    no mention of AOC having the chance to start is a little crazy. there is no world where minshew is his ceiling… he is not a phenomenal prospect in any way at all, but i see a slim chance where he’s the 16-17th qb this season and thats enough for this team to succeed. i dont see that in minshew

    • @zackhurwitz9441
      @zackhurwitz9441 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

      Minshew had the 13th highest QBR in the league last year, and was a dropped pass from winning the division, nearly getting a team to the playoffs. Granted, under a great playcaller in Steichan.
      Nevertheless, he has similar career stats to Trevor Lawrence, who's around 16th in terms of my rankings. So, fair enough.
      Meanwhile, AOC and Jimmy G had Davante Adams longing for the cold of GB. I don't think I've ever been more whelmed by a QB prospect than O'Connell.

    Living near Kansas City and going to Arrowhead for Raiders games regularly around the turn of the century with my dad back in the day was a great time. Sure the home fans gave me shit especially when we would lose badly, and that place is LOUD, but that is the weird thing. Walking out after a game where Janikowski broke their hearts with a huge field goal, that place got eerily silent as that ball was kicked and in the air. It was spooky hearing that many people hold their breath at the same time.
    The first time we went, I think in 97, dad decided we should go hang out with the members of The Nation for tailgating. Probably he was hoping to not get me beaten to a pulp in my Silver & Black, but we walked up to a group of my brothers and sisters of The Nation and they welcomed us with open arms and we were soon treated like long lost relatives. Good food, a few beers and laughing and before long dad is chatting car stuff with the guys about their tricked out black rides. Now if you asked me what a middle aged white guy could possibly have in common with guys he would have avoided because they "look like gang bangers", I would not have thought it possible. But gearheads love their rides.
    The Raiders were known as embracing outcasts, misfits and oddballs, our experience with Raider Nation was exactly the same.

  • @JosePlata
    @JosePlata 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Telesco is the yin to Pierces yang. In that sense they're perfect for each other. Also, we got Champ Kelly in place and Telesco did not care we had the coach already in place. Hiring head coaches and late round drafting was obviously Telesco's biggest misses. Late round drafting has not been our problem. The first 2 rounds have been a huge problem for us recently.
    What I did notice is you mentioned Joe Philbin as the senior offensive assistant. Joe Philbin is a master of the 5 man protection scheme. We need to get better at this so we can play Bowers, Meyers, Mayer and Adams at the same time. 5 man protection is something we were not very good at last year.
    Happy to see you mentioned Malcom Koonce. Across from Crosby Koonce is the talk of Raider nation, he's in the last year of his rookie contract and he's about to blow up big time. He had 8 sacks in 9 games under Pierce. Adams finished last year over 1000 yards with Jimmy Grapes, Brian Hoyer and O'Connell throwing him the football. He did drop some passes late last year, this should not be overlooked.

    • @jameshannagan4256
      @jameshannagan4256 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I'm pretty sure they led the league in max-protect, chips and least amount of players actually being available to catch passes. I think this issue is probably the most important one for our offense it'll effect our run-pass balance a hell of a lot too. This is a difficult team to try and project for I could make a case for 6-7 wins and I could make a case for 10-11 wins just as easily. One thing i do know is how much I hated watching those bad defenses every week and how much more I enjoyed watching good defensive play for the most part. Us older Raider fans (i'm 59) remember things from the great past teams a little differently, it seems the younger fans thought we were always an explosive offensive team but it was always ball control and a solid rushing attack and always very good to great defenses. If you look at some of the numbers guys like Plunkett barely completed 50% of their passes even with the Raiders but we always had quick strike ability to even things out. I think this is the best roster since the early 2000s it's far from perfect, but there's enough talent to compete and the team is young. Hopefully AOC wins the job and shows his upside because Minshew is a good backup/plan b, but for the team to actually contend we need AOC to take the next step and continue to improve. If we can manage to play with leads our pass rush should terrorize teams without really good offensive lines and turn the ball over and get good field position. Full circle that's how we used to win all the time.

      After week 5 of '22 where even Fields haters thought that his New Tendency to stop himself throwing to wide-open receivers mid-throw was a coaching decision, Eberflus tried to silence reporters asking him about this by (I kid you not) slashing his arm in a chop-wave motion like an Angry Dad. After 3 weeks of this Fields _finally_ called out his coaches publicly.
      A little too late. But Eberflus didn't know that & in his panic allowed Getsy to call the offense with less interference. Eberflus *had boasted about* meddling in the offense which was why the reporters were hounding him, not Getsy.
      Weeks 8-10 the Bears led the NFL in offense. Their #1 WR was a guy known for dropping passes that hit him in the hands. #2 was Chase Claypool who tended to avoid this problem by running the wrong routes. Yet with that & a supposed bust QB Getsy led a league with Allen/Diggs Tua/Tyrrek in offense. So he might be great.
      I'm disappointed that these guys aren't telling _ME_ this. Also, why tf do they think Minshew will be the starter? The only way the Raiders will know if they need to draft a QB next year is to see what they have in AOC _this_ year with a better receiving corps.
      It's not like they're going to contend with Minshew, so why start him?

      @EAFSQ9 if Fields makes it on the Field this year we get a sense of was Getsy holding Fields back with his terrible play calling or was Fields holding Getsy back by limiting what plays could be called due to his deficiencies. Extremely weird take to say they’re neutral relative to last year. Brock Bowers, Christian Wilkins, JPJ? That’s an upgrade. We got rid of McDaniels for AP, tom telesco has already shown he makes good decisions in the draft and free agency, and Luke Getsy is (admittedly bad) but he’s a serious OC, better than anything we had last year (pre and post McDaniels).
    Also AOC is starting over Minshew. That’s not a hot take, that’s according to everyone that watched preseason training so far. The defense is going to feast and the offense has more weapons and offensive line skill than they had last year.

      Most likely true but AOC might be better than a lot of people think. I went back and watched some of his college games and he really was a totally different player than the average fan thinks he is. I thought he was too averse to making risky throws but I think that was the coaching staff because in school he was more of a reckless gunslinger type that needed help reeling in some of those throws and learning to get rid of the ball instead of making so many risky throws. He also moved around in the pocket much better than he showed last year, so again I think that was a coaching decision. He looked at his first 2 reads and was told not to make a throw if they're not open. Does any of this mean he's going to be a good pro? No one knows but I do like his arm and accuracy and it's entirely possible he ends up a good pro QB. He stayed at the facility all off season and also transformed his body to get in NFL shape so he did what he could do. We should find out by games 6-7 if he has a shot and if it doesn't work out Minshew isn't a terrible plan b and it's back to the drawing board for next year. That was the best we could do without doing something reckless and stupid and they made the right decision as far as i'm concerned.

He was a reckless gunslinger in college and that was the knock on him going into the draft. Watch the PFF post draft show for 2023 both guys had mostly positive things to say about him and that he'd have a shot in the NFL to play. He moved around the pocket pretty well too. I'm not saying he's going to be a star or anything, just that he's better than a lot of fans think he is. 2. The Chargers have been offseason champs for 10 years now due to their "talent". Every year they're predicted to be great and "loaded". Not enough people realize how important that is, way too many teams end up with what Al used to call a dog pound, a little of this a little of that. It does make a GMs job much easier and TT wouldn't be the first GM to have more success on his 2nd job it happens a lot. That's one thing the Raiders always had, a clear vision of what the team is supposed to look like. That issue has ruined a lot of otherwise good GMs who were actually good at drafting talent. It doesn't help when there's a lot of turnover all the time either. I have hope (finally) that the team is actually headed in the right direction and now they have to stick with the plan and draft smart and manage the cap well. Sort of like the 2022 Giants season where variance played a huge role in their success despite being middling in terms of roster talent and performance. In 2023 the variance didn't do them favors along with the injuries and they went from winning 9 games to 6. They difference is that we have a really good defense that should have us in every game. I'm not one of those fans that thinks we'll win every year but just on our roster alone we'll be better than last year. It really comes down to QB play like everyone keeps saying (for once they're right). AOC doesn't have to throw for 4500 yards but he needs to move the chains and play with a lead more often so our defense can get turnovers and good field position. If the offense can be efficient and not turn the ball over I could see 10-11 wins but I can also see 6-8 wins as well. This really is a difficult team to make predictions about but i'm happy it'll be fun to watch defense again.

    Telesco drafts well in the first round. The Raiders have been lacking that. Also, management was behind spending big money last year. They thought they had a roster to push for a Super Bowl and tried to get Khalil Mack and JC Jackson. From my understanding to let go, had his hand strapped when it came to salary cap decisions. Chargers had a good roster Herbert, Derwin, James Keenan Allen, Mike Williams Joey Bosa. Injuries and bad coaching is what hurt the chargers.

    Mark Davis chose telesco because he had a lot of experience. He didn’t want to pair a first time head coach with a first time gm. I’m with you tho it was a bit of a head scratcher

    AOC half the season starts as a rookie 3rd string under a dumpster fire 12 tds 7 interceptions 2200 yards.
    Garner Minshews ' pro bowl ' season 15 tds 9 interceptions 3300 on an entire season.
    ? What are we talking about here haha you give Aidan a shot. If Aidan was with any other team the media would be talking about his potential in another light.

    As you alluded to at the top of the episode, Raiders fans have been waiting 25 years for something special. I been one of those fans. I have learned to be patient; so personally I don’t need the Raiders to win the Division and make a SB run this year. Honestly probably not going down like that this year. But I am expecting this team to better than they have been in years past. That’s a low bar. So I’m ready for improvement

    Their second TE is not better than their 3rd WR. Fields doesn't know how to adjust at the line of scrimmage. Getsy was the pass game coordinator for both of Adams best seasons in TDs and yards. Also who the hell is Bam? You making players up?

    I agree with most of your evaluation, but I disagree with your assessment of the qb room. AOC does not play the same game as Minshew. He takes care of the ball better and focuses on winning from within the pocket. He's also more accurate. I think he wins the job to start the year. The offense might be less explosive with him at the helm, but they're not gonna turn it over as often.

    The high and low is volatile because if Oconnell has a 95-98 passer rating and 28 tds they can win 11 games. If he plays bad and they trade Davante they might win 4-5.

    I think the draft shows that Telesco and AP are on the same page - it was an amazing draft (except Glaze, perhaps), and all of them are "leave it all on the field" AP guys. Also, from what I understand, Telesco wasn't in charge of the contracts in LA.

    And I'm not a big Tom Telesco fan. But y'all are bugging! He loaded the Chargers with talent, the whole 11 years he was there. 2 studs on their oline, 2 studs at WR, plus good backups, star safety, Boss/Mack, a QB that y'all seen to believe is something special ect... Where did he go wrong? JC Jackson was a failure, not because of Telesco. They did to him the same thing that Philly did to Nnamdi Asomugha! Picked him up cause he played great in one system. Then put him in a totally different system, and blamed him cause it didn't work!

      Rashawn Slater was a gimme pick in 2021 where LT had two legit prospects. Guess who the Raiders reached in the first round for an O-line guy? Keenan Allen is a nice big slot receiver he alone couldn't carry the pass game even with Herbert. Mike Williams and Bosa may be nice but being injured doesn't help their case. Mack came via trade and most likely influenced by Staley looking to add his own guys to make the Chargers defense cohesive. He also chose Zion Johnson in 2022 in the first round which was a gimme pick. Then took defense and an RB past those rounds where none of those guys have actually produced even in a depth role. He has many of those draft years in his tenure with the Chargers. Thing is JC Jackson wasn't just Telesco's miss in drafts/FA. The D-line assembled under Staley's era was Austin Johnson (injured)/Joseph Day/Morgan Fox and you wonder why they can't stop the run? Morgan Fox is valued as a good run defender but he's also sub 300 lbs. Fucking Kenneth Murray was still playing reps because nobody in the depth was promising enough to play him out. Y'all act like Telesco doesn't have 10+ years as a GM for misses but focus on the hits that many good GMs pull twice over. Fuck Jerry Jones has built a better roster worthy of being overrated than Telesco has in the same frame.

      @@t4d0W They still had talent on their roster, more than we had that's for sure. He didn't do so well selecting head coaches although sometime the owners have a big say in who the head coaches are. He seemed to do well with picks in rounds 1-2 but struggled in rounds 3-7 and sometimes picking the BPA is underrated as hell. The year in which we drafted at 4th overall and twice in the 20s killed us their were plenty of offensive lineman we could have picked but we ended up drafting them in later drafts and they busted anyway.

      I'll never understand the Ferrell, Arnette and Leatherwood picks there were plenty of good players available. Freaking Leatherwood couldn't even play guard which is insane for a OT and they passed over the guy the Vikings picked (Darrow I think) who everyone kept saying was BPA.

    Great video. As a person who covers all teams I’m impressed with your analysis, as I, a raiders fan who follows the team quite closely I was surprised by the tolesco hire as well as the getsy hire I’m even more unhappy with. Telesco at least hit some picks (all gms miss it seems). So I agree with you there. I think the change in culture with AP hopefully will bring everyone together and give the whole squad a boost, and I feel the roster got improvements without any positions groups really falling off. The qb play I feel like AOC has a shot to start I’d be curious to hear more from you guys on him, as you undoubtedly watch more film than me. I don’t see why he can’t get better, it seems like we won some games and had a few good games for a rookie coming into a rough situation I have some hope for him. Should be interesting I agree more with the guy that put our floor at 6 wins ceiling at 10! Good analysis was interesting to hear about some of the lesser known hires like offensive line, and Joe Philbon (offensive assistant). Chears boys enjoy the season… oh ya one more thing… RRRRRRRRRRRRAAAAAAAAAAAIIIIIIDDDDEERZ!!!!!
