      Prince may have created the music and provided direction, but he personally could not pull the attitude or the sound. In the concerts I seen when they were together, the Time blew Prince off the stage. No denying Prince’s talent. But the “Revolution”, “New Power Generation”, whoever Prince fronted was no match for a Time show. Just my opinion!

      @@woodygould True. There were no live mikes or instruments at all. Watch how the music fades at 3:17. Every _American Bandstand_ performance that I have ever seen was lip-synced to the actual record, including this one. _Soul Train_ , _The Midnight Special_ and the british show _Top of the Pops_ did exactly the same thing. These were dance shows where the artist/band lip-synced, pantomimed instruments, and danced to their record audio. The _Tonight Show_ , _David Letterman_ , _Arsenio_ , and others actually had live performances.

    For all the non-musicians watching this... that drum beat in 777-9311 is nothing to take lightly. It was a programmed drum machine track in the studio version, and is still to this day known by drummers as one of the most difficult beats to play. Jellybean Johnson is sitting back there nailing it without breaking a sweat with that "I wish you would" look on his face. Amazing.

(Mckindly jr high) Some dude stopped at a stop sign and this was playing in his car. I just remembered hearing 7779311. I already knew alittle about prince from my father who had his Contoversy album on 8 track a year or two before.it all came together sometime after that. And the rest was history.

      if you are talking about 777-9311 it's actually a combination of live drumming and a drum machine done by prince. Jelly bean has mentioned in many interviews that it's almost impossible to play with just live drums. Many people on youtube have tried but don't quite get it!

    • @leetate977
      @leetate977 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You are partly correct. It is a combination of live drumming and drum programming on 777, but it was not Prince. It was another guy. Morris was in L.A. on a radio station some years back and was asked that very question. he gave the guys name, but I have since forgot his name

      Man I'm just learning how freaking awesome the drums were on this track. The other replies made me recall how Michael Jackson ended up with his drummer (last name Moffet) He was first hired for the Jackson Triumph Tour after being able to play the drum piece from The Jacksons' song "Shake Your Body Down". After his audition he was told by the brothers that that had not found anyone who could play that because it was actually recorded in 3 seperate parts (i think part electronically) and no one had been able to catch all of it at once until he had done it.

    For those who don't know "777-9311" was Revolution guitarist Dez Dickersen's phone number. During the recording of the Time's album, he had already told Prince that after the "1999" tour ended he'd be leaving the Revolution.
    Now Prince and Dez were as close as brothers and would play pranks on each other, so Prince took Dez' phone number and made it into a song title, resulting in Dez getting a shitload of unwanted phone calls.
