I stopped reading when i realised that i was reading just to look like a book warm, but now i read because i want to, like enjoying the details and the ups and downs of the story... It's more like magic now 😍

This is great advice. I always see people and friends that have goals to read too much, like 1-2 books a week, which they can't do over long periods of time, but it's also gonna limit the types of books you read. You can't read great or more difficult novels in a week, at least that has been my experience.
I'm currently going through Proust's In search of lost time and it's such a pleasure.
But I'm taking my time with this. It's been 3 months and I just finished the 4th volume.
This novel is actually changing how I think and how I see day to day life and interactions with other people, it's unlike anything I've ever read.

As a former serial reader (mostly through elementary and middle school) I think I missed a lot in books because I read them too fast. Not in the sense that they where hard to digest or that I missed some underlying plot (that I probably also did) but I barely remember my favorites. Because I didn’t let the story in print on me, affect me or teach me some new way of thought. I realized a few days ago I don’t remember anything about the Hunger games, Harry Potter or Divergent or more recent easy speed reeding such as any John Green book. When I entered high school my literature teacher thought me how to truly read a book, how to analyze it and something that really affected me was her being very strict on how far in a book we are suppose to read, not further, let it sink in a bit first, think about it and then countinued reading. A book I read a year before was in my opinion a pretty average modern horror story, not great, not bad a 400 pager that I went through in less than a week. The same book she assigned us too read during the whole last term, the book was precived totally different when not speed read. The symbolism, references to other gothic pieces, the allegory’s and meaning. It was a totally different experience.

Consistency is Key! Great video. What I usually do is break my reading periods into 15-25 minute blocks 2-3 times per day. Works like a charm!

    • @muhlenstedt
      @muhlenstedt 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

And you are doing something good for your health also with these breaks.Newly, researchs showed that sitting more than 25 minutes is very bad for our circulation, brain and imune system. After sitting for this time one should move for 20 minute and stay for 10 minutes.Of course , we can not believe in every research, there are so many contraditories, but I can just say that I have fewer headaches since I beginn to read in small chunks of time.Anyway, happy reading!

When I was in film and animation school, my classmates all would reference auteur shit, the equivalent of real literary literature type shit. And I’d feel insecure because I just rewatched Commando of a Jackie Chan flick the night before and that was my jam. When I started reading a ton I felt the same, I would see people reading heavy stuff, and I felt dumb for liking thrillers and “easy” reads. But, a book, like a movie, for me, is entertainment. So I now have no problem plowing through my Goodreads goals because I’m reading what I ENJOY.

I've found recently that I have a habit of reading a book in 5 days and then I just don't read for 2 weeks straight afterwards.
I've been trying to get back into my habits since my life got scrambled by Covid-19, and I need to remind myself it's about the quality of my media consumption, and not quantity.
On the plus side however, many theatre companies have been posting recordings of their productions because of the outbreak, so I've been getting into Shakespeare a bit. I watched Romeo and Juliet yesterday and I absolutely adored it!

  • @aleamilr

I think a big part of meaningful reading is not reading so quickly that you miss out on actually interacting with the book. Just consuming a book as quickly as possible in order to meet some arbitrary goal is not going be as beneficial as reading a book slowly, asking questions as you go, drawing connections, and really “answering” the book, if that makes sense. I never feel as though I’ve really read a book until I’ve talked about it with someone or written about it.
I think looking at books as a one way street of communication or just another unit of media to mindlessly consume is a great waste.

Being a bookworm my whole life, I studied literature in university and considering bad mental health, uni culture shock, choosing to only major in lit instead of doubling with neuroscience and having to work all through school ... I learned to HATE reading :’) I still love books and reading, but I cannot finish a novel, I get distracted easily, and I just cannot enjoy it as I used to ...
This is an incredible approach! I keep trying to relive middle school days of being able to read a whole book in a day but what I read then was definitely different i what I read now! :’) having ADHD doesn’t help either 😅 definitely trying this less is more approach ;)
    Also with my writing!

    I’ve came across this book:
How to read as a writer.
The book opened my mind about approaching the materials, improved my understanding and appreciation of the materials that I’m reading. It’s like cleaning my foggy reading glasses. It make reading more interesting. Also, I love to re-read some works again at different age as a grow older and gained more life experiences. By doing so, it gives me different perspectives of the meaning implied/intended by the authors.

In my experience, I loved to read as if im entering into a new planet. I try to create an atmosphere where i can feel i am in that book. I watch interviews of the author, music to keep rhythm of the context, search more about the places, the things and the people to empathy with...Earlier i used to have that problem where if the climax or anything is slipped out from anyone around me i would get furious for destroying my experience. But experience is much more different than how i ve been taught...♥️

Don’t be hard on yourself. I usually space out on my reading when a. ) It is not interesting to me. B.) The vocabulary is difficult or too many difficult words to translate or decipher in just one paragraph (Read: Clockwork Orange) or C) the author‘s writing style is not my taste. I resorted to pre-reading or test reading a book before I buy it.

Try slowing down. Read a sentence and then pause to process the thought and visualize it. Then move on.
Ocassionally, stop and try to recall and visialize what you read. Try to see big picture and don't dwell on the details unless there is a reason (exam, lecture, book club, etc).
When i did this, I actually learned well written and poorly written books.

This makes me think a bit about some of the essays and books that I was forced to read in uni that really didn't resonate with me. With this video, now I can sorta think about why I didn't enjoy them. One reason is the time limit I was given, how I had to read these thirty-page things in a week in order to participate in the class discussion. Since it wasn't a topic that I would have chosen myself and I perceived that I had "better things to be doing", I would often skim them (first and last sentence of every paragraph) just so I knew enough to talk about it in class that week.
If I had taken the time to really sit and just go through the pages and if I had made a habit out of reading just a few pages of the paper each day rather than scarfing the whole thing the night before, I probably could have gotten more out of it.
Ah well, just because I'm not in school anymore doesn't mean I can't appreciate more dense works! I just get to do it on my own time (or as a part of work that I get paid for haha!).

This simple, yet effective and concise advice that forms the base to which reading becomes a part of people. The things you said in the video called me out, but it made me aware of what reading really means, the experience. I've always wanted to read books and want people to view me as " a well-read " person, even If it meant I didn't enjoy the book(s) I was reading. Going to apply this piece of advice from now on; to be consistent, whilst striking the right balance to my reading abilities.
    Thanks Robin!

I think, you have to make an effort to push yourself to understand something above your usual reading level. To pause. Read a chapter. What did I just read??? Understand it. Put yourself in the role of the protagonist. Imagine that's you.
This makes reading easier if you then start reading, say a thriller.

This is such a good advice... Since I heard that from other videos of yours and the idea of reading 2 books at the same time It's all going great now xD!! And to secure the habit, I made a bet with a friend that if I skip a day without reading for 1 hour minimum(quarantine free time) I'll have to pay him a specific amount of money! That's also helping a lot (hahaha). Anyway, thanks! The idea of reading a specific number of books was always creating an ideal of how much I should read and that big task made me not read at all !! And I haven't realized that before... keep up sharing! (sorry for any mistakes, english is not my native language).

Hey thanks for the advice! I have to admit that I own a bunch of books that I’ve never read! Mainly because I want to read them. But when you get this many books it becomes overwhelming and makes you a little anxious to finish them.
I’m also in seminary reading an average of 2500 pages per semester. When I first started I tried to read whole assignments at once. I would barely retain any of the information. But I have really cut back on what I read in a day and I plan out well in advance what I have to read so that I can easily digest it.
Your videos have been a big encouragement to that end! Thanks! I am really enjoying your content.

    😂
I am reading Marcel Proust's fourth book right now and ... I do read 5 pages a day 😅
Just for beautiful language, my country (Estonia) has not the whole thing translated, it is actually easy and magical to read translated parts of it in my own language -- that is why I do try to read the whole thing; we have the last book, and part from Sodom and Gomorrah. Even my teenage daugter LOVED a page-long quote I read to her.
But of course after my 5 pages are done, I read other books. Reading Gide's "The Immoralist" right now and my heart!, I love this book. It's very short, I fell asleep yesterday before I could finish, though. I have read it before, 20-25 years ago. Loved it! But now I love it even more, because I am all about authenticity now, and that's basically about self-acceptance and authenticity in crisis.
I keep a reading journal for books I want to write out quotes, I don't write down books that slipped by without really touching me. And I have watched book-lovers' videos here on YT during last 3 days and this little thing about how I keep my reading journal makes me happy, as ... it shows I don't care about the NUMBER of books read. I never watch TikTok, I am 46 and don't even know what I should do after downloading this, I mean -- do I see completely random Shh, as I don't know anyone? 😅
It's hard to be old. It's even harder, when you're stupid 😁
Edit: Sorry, forgot to say I LOVE YOUR THOUGHTS AND ENERGY

I like imperfect things a lot, like an inverted painting or even a random scribble ,a pebble on road ,as well a Splash of water on the floor is enough to Spark the creativity inside me .I love imagining drawings on floating clouds in the sky . I also like broken things a lot not because of something emotional which you would be probably thinking right now but because something very beautiful can be created from it . It is also not because of that it helps to save environment because of recycling or reusing, that is a second factor in my eyes. How every small thing which might look useless to you can be turned beautiful .Just like that I love my Messy hair than the Combed ones. I see a beauty in them as well maybe my mind has some sort of software installed in it which makes everything look different , makes patterns in it and I think that software is creativity and imagination. Don't take me wrong here and don't roam around with Messy hair but it's just that I like my Messy hair . I love observing nature because it is a perfect example of imperfections yet it is the only Supreme and Ultimate thing in the world. Nature is just not trees, plants and animals but things as they are . Even the cosmos or planets other than the earth are nature .If you see the definition of nature in dictionary it is ; the natural world as it exists without human beings or civilization. Nature is in its own harmony with no problem to fix . It was there before you were and will be there after you go. You just have to find your place to fit in . Even nature has it own flaws but.
I like to see a building in process rather than a completely constructed one with fineness embedded in it, because perfection in every product around is needed nowadays whether it is your phone ,cupboards because without it ,it won't work and won't sell .so, it is just too common or may be at least a thing which is needed . Perfection is necessary in those products and your professional work as well as, it may be making Rockets ,manufacturing something, your submission of daily project assignment, otherwise you might just get kicked out of there. But nature gives you chance every time you look at it to just slow down and admire it. Just find bliss to live in it cuz you come from nature , your mother EARTH...💚

Excellent advice. My main problem has been that I've been forcing myself too much in the last two months. I've trying to consume everything, everything seems interesting at the first glance, but the problem is that when I try to dive in I can't enjoy a book or a reading because I'm n thinking in all the other things that I should be reading. This then becomes a vicious cycle where I can't enjoy reading. I've tried to conciliate this with the amounts of texts I have to take as a sociology major, but lately I've felt unmotivated with learning and reading. Everything seems dead, and I'd like to have the first semesters feeling when everything seemed marvelous, living and fascinating. Guess I shouldn't be more kind and pressure myself less. If you guys have a similar experience, please share it!

(Not book-related, but still about reading) I remember when I was in my first year of teaching, I was assigned to teach Research to HS students. It was their first research subject so their work were kinda messy at first. I handled hundreds of students, they were grouped, but I still had 45+ groups which means I had 45+ papers to check and read over and over again.
So when you said 'reading over your limit, you're gonna feel like vomiting', yeah, I really experienced that.
What happened was, I feel nauseated even after reading a page of a real book. I've only read one book in that whole year. And it still has an effect for me coz I am still in a reading slump. :(

What's your opinion on reading multiple (like.. . 7) books at a time? I find I can get burned out on a specific book, but not the act of reading. I find reading a lot of books (and articles) at the same time allows me to experience different stories and read a good amount without getting sick of one story in particular. As long as you can keep the storylines straight, I think its a good idea. Any thoughts on this?

Depends on what you're reading. Seems like you're confused that books need to have stories. If you're reading philosophy, they don't have 'stories'. You probably want to read complementary works alongside whatever treatise you picked. Same with history. There's no reason not to read 5 books on nautical history at the same time if they fall in the same time period and historical demographic. You can cross reference and fact check and there's no particular order to read them in.
As for fiction...? I'm not sure why you'd overburden yourself.

I read daily normally for thirty minutes to one hour in the morning and then the same in the evening. Occasionally I will read for longer but it depends on the book.

I recently realised that watching all those booktubers who make videos about reading 1 book a day or something, messed up my reading habits. I used to read and enjoy it but now i force myself to read 3h a day a really heavy novel such as The Karamazov Brothers. I ended up not finishing it because i felt overwhelmed and really dumb that i couldn't read as many hours as they did.

How do you read when you find difficult or new words ? I mean... do you read continuously without checking it's meaning in the dictionary or do you often check it's meaning while reading? Thank you in advance. Have a good day. Stay safe.

I like your video very much . You are very different than other so called brainy youtubers . You speak from the root . What I have learn from Eastern philosophy ( Vedanta ) doesn't contradict on yours . It will be very great if you study Upanishads . You can learn through Acharya Prashant . He teaches Vedantic philosophy very true , from the root . If you want to know beyond the brainy then you should definitely go for him ( as a helper ) or you can directly go to the Upanishads .

I'm not the guy in the video but I have been reading constantly in Italian for over 10 years (started at about 20). I would advise readers who have too much of a sense of urgency to read in another language in order to learn how to slow down. When you read in another language you obviously start paying a lot more attention to the words, and you would no longer be able to give yourself ridiculous goals like completing 25 books in an hour. You also need to start with authors who write with a very simple language, otherwise you'll get too frustrated with the amount of words you need to check.

@@wandersonmartins5597 Also, if you're at A1/A2/B1/B2 level, you need to read simplified texts aimed at students at those levels. Once you're at C1 you can start reading books for native speakers, but as I said in the first comment, read native level books with a very simplified language, and increase difficulty slowly. Well this is what I did anyway. If you're at A2 level and reading native books (even simple ones) they'll be too much grammar you're missing out on. If you want to find simplified books for students of foreign languages (A1 level, A2 B1 etc.) you need to go into the foreign languages section in the book shop. The nice thing is that they often have simplified versions of classics, so you feel like you're also getting to know the literature of the country as well.

In addition to my mother tongue, I also read in English. My method is to highlight all new words you encounter. If you can't understand what's happening without looking up the new word, do it. If you get the main idea, do not look the word up right away - it's going to take away from your reading experience. After finishing the book, go back, google all of the new vocabulary and jot down the definitions. If you have time, reread, focusing on the language used.
