    Lots of people in the comments assuming that the only way to wield the Katana is traditional, picturesque Kendo stances and guards. Musashi himself says every guard is adaptable to the situation to the point where they all become one fluid guard. I doubt he would see a problem doing whatever works rather than limiting yourself to convention. Good fighting.

      Thanks! My feeling exactly. The real disturbing point is that, even different Koryu practices different guards, stands and movement methods, but certain people will assume there is only one kind of standard to follow. Worse still, they derive this imagination from popular cultures. Even Kendo is a better reference

      Sorry, but he's off balance most of the time, and loses distance by holding the sword too close to his body to compensate. I understand this is just friends playing around, so I don't judge them too harshly, but those watching should know that this footwork would get you killed in a real fight.

    • @ZerogunRivale
      @ZerogunRivale 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Off balance, yes. Holding sword too close to his body? No. Those are actual stance he is using to engage his opponent with a particular set of strikes. There is nothing wrong with that. Simultaneously, the longsword user is also using stances that hold the blade close to himself in order to execute the particular set of strikes he wants. Both are legitimate and can be found in each other's martial arts. The idea that the only proper katana stance is holding your sword out isn't true in iaido which some of his stances come from, and I have to imagine it isn't true in kendo either. Holding your sword ou right in front of yout in iaido, kendo, or HEMA has its counters. There are even some examples in this video which is why the katana user manages to get in quite a few clean strikes that end the round quickly.

    • @madnessbydesign1415

      @@ZerogunRivale Fair points. My comment was kept short for simplicity's sake, and may have been misleading.
      You are correct - there are indeed times where it is absolutely appropriate to keep the blade closer to the body, but what I see here (frequently) is not a stylistic choice, but his unsure footwork needing to be compensated for by bringing the sword closer to avoid falling over. I am unaware of any weapon style (or empty hand, if we're honest) that doesn't stress the importance of good footwork.
      Again, this was an informal 'fun' match, so I was really critiquing the original poster's claim that this was "honestly amazing, dude has that Ghost of Tsushima tier footwork" more than the swordsman himself. They were having fun and testing themselves, and that's great! Hopefully, both players learned and can grow from it... :)

    I see a lot of comments saying that the katana guy is using the blade like a longsword...
    They must have no Japanese swordmanship experience at all and base their comments on what they see in media and anime.
    While katana and LS does have differences in sharpening and balance, its because they are optimized for different purposes. In the end of the day, they are both sharp weighted metal sticks, how u use them cant be THAT different, they both rely on point of contact, positioning, and intent. So if it looks similar to an unexperienced person, its only natural.

    • @rookieluke3550
      @rookieluke3550 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      the katana user seems to favorite the right low stance(migi gedan no kamae) over seigan. But it is my opinion that a higher stance would be better since the opponent's weapon is longer and heavier.

    • @MrBelfering
      @MrBelfering 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My initial thought was that the longsword user was trying to fight too much like a katana user. I believe (possibly incorrectly mind you) that most longsword fighting styles were sharp thrusts instead of wide swings. And that the most common fighting stances involved holding the blade with one hand (more like a spear). This was done because it gave enough jabbing power to pierce chainmail. No matter how powerful a longsword swing was, the blade would never be sharp enough to cut metal, so you had to jab under the arm pits or in other exposed areas if you wanted a kill. Katanas in contrast had different armors that they had to defeat and were therefore more designed to cut, with fighting styles to match.

    • @rookieluke3550
      @rookieluke3550 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@MrBelfering You are not wrong in that area of usage of a longsword. However longsword was also used as a dueling weapon as well, in which case their usage is very similar to that of a katana. The usage of holding the longsword like a spear to deal with armor falls more under a technique rather than the overarching style of a LS. Nowadays instead of the spear style the sword one is more popular, since nobody is trying to pierce armor nowadays. The spear hold also has close quarter counter fighting advantages. But such techniques also exist with a katana with one hand guiding the back of the blade.

    • @madnessbydesign1415
      @madnessbydesign1415 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Despite being "sharp weighted metal sticks", their use can indeed be very different. A double edged long sword is used very differently than a single edged katana. A Chinese broadsword is also a 'sharp weighted metal stick', but it's also used differently than the other two.
      The katana, despite its reputation for being indestructible, is actually quite vulnerable to sideways and twisting forces. It's basically a 3' razor blade that is very strong in the direction of the cut, but any twisting during that cut can ruin the blade. This is why Samurai practiced so relentlessly - and why the way they hold it is so important. Katanas are amazing in the hands of a true master, but that mastery requires great dedication... :)

      Iron ore and coal are high in phosphorus and sulfur and do not contain vanadium.
      In ancient Japan, slag was called noro, and the process of removing slag was called noro dashi or noro shibori.
      In tatara ironmaking, the iron sand is semi-molten by keeping the furnace at 1300℃, but only phosphorus, sulfur and impurities are melted and discharged. So impurities are removed from tamahagane, the material of katana
      The low-temperature reduction method makes the grains of the steel smaller, so the steel has excellent toughness. Vanadium makes the steel malleable and easy to roll, making it easy to fold.
      By folding, the vanadium is finely dispersed and combined with carbon to form a fine metal structure, so the katana has excellent hardness, abrasion resistance, corrosion resistance, and toughness, and becomes beautiful when sharpened.
      Hitting the steel with a hammer removes the carbon with a spark, so the carbon content drops to 0.7%, which is suitable for katana.
      By folding, the steel of katana is in a state where austenite and martensite, which have different hardnesses, are dispersed.
      When a katana is sharpened with a Japanese sharpening stone, the austenite is removed and martensite remains, so the blade becomes like a microscopic saw.
      That's why Japanese knives sharpen when cutting.
      Japan's Hitachi Metals developed Yasugi Specialty Steel (yasugi hagane) around 1970 by analyzing and applying tatara ironmaking and tamahagane.
      Yasugi Steel has the same properties as katana, so it is hard, impact-resistant, and hard to break.
      This special steel is used for various purposes such as cutlery steel, materials for high-end kitchen knives made in Japan, materials for razors, automobile parts, automobile engine parts, and aircraft engine parts.
      Japanese knives and zwilling Japanese knives are made from steels such as Blue Paper Steel (Aogami), which is based on Yasugi Steel.

    What I find hugely disappointing about HEMA when I've done it is that a good majority of fencers don't utilise feints at ALL. It's a core fundamental skill taught in all beginner fencing (epee, foil sabre) schools is this, as well as disengages/oblique movements.
    Even in tournament footage, I rarely see anyone use these basic fundamentals, the practitioners are simply fixated on posing and launching singular-staged attacks/defenses, I just don't understand.
    The person with the katana definitely has out-of-HEMA experience, whether it be kendo or olympic fencing. I applaud their tenacity and good utilisation of footwork and combat-strategy. bravo.

    Don't get me wrong, I prefer a longsword because of it's weight distribution, but I'm curious, why do people in these "katana vs longsword" videos always use the short katana over the longer one? It's like having one fighter use a shortsword to fight the longsword, or a sword to spear. Length plays a big role in weapons fighting, way more so than in MMA. I can't imagine someone with any common sense would generally want to use the shorter stick, given that it's open area?

      so the advantage may be big, but something you should remember when fighting against experts.

The fighter that is shorter and has the reach disadvantage will always have a much harder time defeating taller and heavier opponents. I've handled longswords before and they are really light, all these clichés about them being heavy and clumsy is just bullshit coming from weebs who think Katanas are the "bestest swords ever".
      European swords and Japanese swords had completely different roles, they were adapted to their environment. European swords were multi function tools, you could cut when people weren't wearing armor (or if some part of their body was exposed), usually against armored oponnents you would either stab weak points (armpits, eyeslits...) with techniques such as half-swording or alternatively you could grab the sword by the blade and smash them with the guard/pommel. Katanas on the other hand were made mainly for cutting, that's why the blade is curved. Armor wasn't as advanced in Feudal Japan, so there wasn't as much need to make weapons to counter it ( although maces and such did exist but weren't as prominent ).

    katana never beats a traditional long sword unless there's a fluke or the long sword wielder is inexperienced. in the video look how thin the long sword is if it was a full thickness blade it would more likely shatter the katana with in the first few strikes. katana blades are very strong swords but are very ridged rather than bend they tend to shatter. there are many reports of samurai warriors. Stamping on victim's blade by the hilt to break them so that sword could not be used against them again. So from the impact of a much longer heavy sword it would cause the sword to bend and shatter. all these films of katanas cutting through concrete and steel is just nonsense. The Katana in a real fight (as far as I know, I only have minimal training with a 10lb Claymore and a bastard sword), could be used as a parry weapon (as it was in the Tokugawa period)…with the cavoite that you most definitely could NOT afford more than a few hit.
