I think it's more of anyone who studies Chinese Mythology and learns of the story of Sun Wukong, knows of how dangerous the Submission Crown of Wukong is (please forgive me if I got the name of the crown wrong). When I beat Black Myth: Wukong, I chose to fight Erlang Shen (best boss fight ever) and got this ending. This game is absolutely phenomenal, much like God of War: Ragnarok!!
If you start new game + your get the 6th relic, wukongs mind, beat the game 4 times in total, beating erlang each time and you get wukong stance as a permanent feature (whenever you reach max focus) and the mc speaks with wukongs voicelines whenever you enter that mode
When I found out Erlang staff is almost thirteen tons and how he fought wukong for three hundred rounds I said to myself “Kratos literally has nothing against them”
I’m so relieved you didn’t just walk through Erlang with ease like you did with all the other bosses haha. Legit took me hours. Really enjoyed your play through of this and all the lore you educated us with.
If you didn't fight Erlang then you get the bad ending when you beat the broken shell, where the old monkey does successfully place the band on your head. So the true ending here, where you wake up and open your eyes instead means that you've managed to successfully break free from it, and since what you inherited from Erlang with all the voicelines was the mind of Wukong himself, that's what Wukong meant in this ending when he says he'll rip it off and break free. Because you are Wukong now, and with this have escaped from the influence of the band. That was Wukong's whole plan in the prologue, because like Erlang says when you first face him, no one can kill him but himself. If you manage to do NG++ and beat Erlang all three runs and upgrade all the relics to max, you get access to Wukong stance anywhere as a temporary powerup, and upon entering it, the Destined One even has voicelines all of which are some variation of him saying he is Sun Wukong now. I recommend looking it up just to hear the voicelines cause it's such a cool detail.

I am not Chinese, but my uncle married my aunty (who is Chinese) before I was born so once I was old enough, she introduced me to Journey to the West (she bought me a kid's book version with illustrations) and then a little later to the actual book itself and the TV show from 1986. We still watch it at least once every year together, and since she's a lot older now, we often sit together and I read passages from the book to her. I grew up listening to those stories, so while I cannot imagine how it must feel to a native Chinese person, I felt my own heart swell with fulfillment throughout the game, especially at the end, getting the true ending. It made me tear up and as I near the ending again in my NG+, I know I will cry again. This game instantly became my favorite.

That "charm" side I feel, coincides with his animalistic traits for simply being a monkey, which seems taboo-ish, and like "forbidden love" in a sense haha. BM's version of Wukong is also more mature and manlier than his playful TV adaptations, which adds in to his appeal.

As a Vietnamese, JTTW is absolutely my childhood. Since the releasing of the game trailer, I've been waiting for years. For now I've been playing this game hundreds of hours, have already beaten the game 3 times and heading to the 4th. I got goosebumps everytime you say the Chinese name of the characters/items, since in Vietnamese we have a lot of what we called "Hán Việt" which is our way of speaking/writing your Mandarin. Erlang, especially, and Broken Shell gave me so much trouble. I had to respec and maxed out health, defense, and attack. They're such battles of attrition that you have to be as strong as possible in those areas to survive, at least I did.

You tried running into bajie a few times yet? 😉 Btw if u get a chance read through the journal. It takes the context of the story to a much deeper level. Gotta read in Chinese though, or check some of the Chinese deep dive videos.
If you don’t understand the cutscene after the erlang fight, it has to do with erlang’s lores: why did erlang help the destined one? Answer: erlang (yang jian) got issues with jade emperor (his uncle) about his mother (jade emperor's younger sister) who was married to a male mortal (erlang's father). Erlang's big brother dies, and his younger sister got proctection from Queen Mother of the West. His mother was punished by being imprisoned in a mountain on earth for loving a mortal. His father dies cuz he was still grieving for his wife so he didn't care about the affairs of the court and he was demoted to a poorer commoner than before. He also fell ill and passed away. From then on, yang jian (erlang's mortal name) became a taoist and practiced taoism. He used his giant axe to split the mountain to save his mother and made many meritorious deeds for the people. His filial piety and kindness moved the Jade Emperor, who then appointed him as the Erlang of Guankou (guankou is his birthplace). After wukong becoming a buddha, the heavenly court were still being salty for what he did 500 years ago, they just couldn’t let go of the past, except erlang. They were still afraid of wukong because they were like: "Becoming buddha then what? Having his own freedom?". Wukong thought his band was already gone but it still remains on his head, means no true freedom, being shackled to the heaven. Wukong had already known this so he conspired with erlang to kill him to fool the whole heavenly court. But these are the events take place in BMW timeline with darker twists compared to the original JTTW. The purpose of your whole journey is to remove the golden headband on wukong’s head, by becoming "wukong with no headband". Means he will be no longer shackled to the heavenly court anymore. (Even the buddhas like guanyin and maitreya already agreed to help the destined one and bajie) The first chapter of bmw takes place several centuries later after wukong’s death, and many destined ones before you failed to retrieve his relics, even the old monkey. That’s why bajie called you, the destined one "another mute"

The implication that I got, the old monkey might be with Celestial/Jade Emperor side to imprison Wukong and to fail his plan to create the next Wukong. The old monkey faking it and making the band to be like the 6th relic. With us beating Erlang and got Wukong's memory (which I also think the actual 6th relic/mind), we got to know Wukong's and Erlang's plan to break free from the Celestial control (the headband), which in Black Myth Wukong, they didnt actually take off the band from Wukong's head as we see in the game intro. Because we got to know the plan, we avoid getting imprisoned by the band (or Celestial's order).
As far as I understood: Since celestials are deceitful, they straight up lied to Wukong's face about removing the headband from his head after the journey to the west, and then invaded his mountain for him refusing to live in accordance with their rules in the Court, but underneath Wukong seem to have sought through their lie, and so devised his plan of dying and being reborn, nd that's why Earlang kept his mind in secret, so that it is not lost and the Destined One could recover it, reincarnating Wukong in the process without the band. With that in mind, I hope we'll get Wukong to be chatty, witty and cocky, as he has been in the prologue, because at that point in time, the Destined One should be Wukong in more than merely name.
Just a not-so-little detail: if u choose the suppossedly 'bad' ending, it willl play its version of the song "Where Lies the Path Ahead" and oh boy it really tugs ur heartstrings P/s: so fucking baffled that those ending music got copyrighted, what was that even for???

What the old monkey told you is partially wrong. He said that after Wukong's death, only five of his six relics endured, essentially meaning that the original can never be restored, that the Wukong we know and love is gone for good. What the monkey didn't know is that Erlang secretly kept the sixth relic, Wukong's mind/consciousness/memory. He hid from the Celestial Court for 500 years until the Destined One (who is a reincarnation and/or hair clone of Wukong) finally arrived to pass him the relic after testing if he's truly Wukong reborn. Maitreya Buddha and the fortune teller were in on the whole plan as well. Maitreya created the painting where Erlang went into hiding. After you defeat the broken shell, Wukong regains all his memories and returns within the body of the Destined One, now free from the golden band. That was his goal from the very start. "Watch me rip it off, and break free!" WUKONG NEVER DIES!!

Erlang, especially, and Broken Shell gave me so much trouble. I had to respec and maxed out health, defense, and attack. They're such battles of attrition that you have to be as strong as possible in those areas to survive, at least I did.

If you don’t understand the cutscene after the erlang fight, it has to do with erlang’s lores:
why did erlang help the destined one?
Answer: erlang (yang jian) got issues with jade emperor (his uncle) about his mother (jade emperor's younger sister) who was married to a male mortal (erlang's father). Erlang's big brother dies, and his younger sister got proctection from Queen Mother of the West. His mother was punished by being imprisoned in a mountain on earth for loving a mortal. His father dies cuz he was still grieving for his wife so he didn't care about the affairs of the court and he was demoted to a poorer commoner than before. He also fell ill and passed away.
From then on, yang jian (erlang's mortal name) became a taoist and practiced taoism. He used his giant axe to split the mountain to save his mother and made many meritorious deeds for the people. His filial piety and kindness moved the Jade Emperor, who then appointed him as the Erlang of Guankou (guankou is his birthplace).
After wukong becoming a buddha, the heavenly court were still being salty for what he did 500 years ago, they just couldn’t let go of the past, except erlang. They were still afraid of wukong because they were like: "Becoming buddha then what? Having his own freedom?". Wukong thought his band was already gone but it still remains on his head, means no true freedom, being shackled to the heaven. Wukong had already known this so he conspired with erlang to kill him to fool the whole heavenly court. But these are the events take place in BMW timeline with darker twists compared to the original JTTW.
The purpose of your whole journey is to remove the golden headband on wukong’s head, by becoming "wukong with no headband". Means he will be no longer shackled to the heavenly court anymore. (Even the buddhas like guanyin and maitreya already agreed to help the destined one and bajie)
The first chapter of bmw takes place several centuries later after wukong’s death, and many destined ones before you failed to retrieve his relics, even the old monkey. That’s why bajie called you, the destined one "another mute"

The implication that I got, the old monkey might be with Celestial/Jade Emperor side to imprison Wukong and to fail his plan to create the next Wukong. The old monkey faking it and making the band to be like the 6th relic. With us beating Erlang and got Wukong's memory (which I also think the actual 6th relic/mind), we got to know Wukong's and Erlang's plan to break free from the Celestial control (the headband), which in Black Myth Wukong, they didnt actually take off the band from Wukong's head as we see in the game intro. Because we got to know the plan, we avoid getting imprisoned by the band (or Celestial's order).

As far as I understood:
Since celestials are deceitful, they straight up lied to Wukong's face about removing the headband from his head after the journey to the west, and then invaded his mountain for him refusing to live in accordance with their rules in the Court, but underneath Wukong seem to have sought through their lie, and so devised his plan of dying and being reborn, nd that's why Earlang kept his mind in secret, so that it is not lost and the Destined One could recover it, reincarnating Wukong in the process without the band.
With that in mind, I hope we'll get Wukong to be chatty, witty and cocky, as he has been in the prologue, because at that point in time, the Destined One should be Wukong in more than merely name.

What the old monkey told you is partially wrong.
He said that after Wukong's death, only five of his six relics endured, essentially meaning that the original can never be restored, that the Wukong we know and love is gone for good. What the monkey didn't know is that Erlang secretly kept the sixth relic, Wukong's mind/consciousness/memory. He hid from the Celestial Court for 500 years until the Destined One (who is a reincarnation and/or hair clone of Wukong) finally arrived to pass him the relic after testing if he's truly Wukong reborn. Maitreya Buddha and the fortune teller were in on the whole plan as well. Maitreya created the painting where Erlang went into hiding.
After you defeat the broken shell, Wukong regains all his memories and returns within the body of the Destined One, now free from the golden band. That was his goal from the very start. "Watch me rip it off, and break free!" WUKONG NEVER DIES!!
