Just to set the story straight: the facepainted kids in the video are a boy and girl from Los Angeles, two friends of mine, names Raf and Abby. MGMT was not involved in the making of this video, however, they became involved down the line.
The story goes like this:
December 2007: Rushing to make a due date for a USC Music Video class, I ask my friends Raf and Abby to appear in my video. I like the way they bounce off of each other despite completely different personality types, and think they both have interesting faces. Raf didn't want to shave so I didn't push him. We shot in one night, I cut overnight, turn it in and call it the worst thing I've done so far.
January 2008: On a whim one night while visiting home in Austin, Texas, I throw the video on TH-cam just for kicks.
April 2008: Ray Tintori, who has directed 3 official videos for MGMT, finds my fan video online and invites myself and my two actors to come to New York to appear in MGMTs next official video for Electric Feel.
May 2008: We go to New York and have a great time on the set with the band and all their friends.

I still and will always consider this as the "official" MGMT Kids video.
I am here from time to time for the same reason. The story behind this video is awesome.

15 years later this is still the only version of this song video that works for me. It less than a 100k views when I first saw it! Look at it now, madness.
Amazing being this video was a final for a collage course that was thrown together at the last minute.
still the definitive "Kids" video... and probably the greatest fan video ever made. One of the best songs of the last 10 years and every time I hear the song this video is in mind... I remember dancing to it at an underground club in Tokyo in 2008 or 09 and they were projecting this video on the wall...

I thought this was the official video for the longest time, that those were their faces. I think I like it better than the official one. Something about the contrast of the one intense person and the other very happy person, it's very dramatic and engaging. Hypnotic.

The thing is I swear that the women in the video is in another MGMT song - electric feel, you see her for a second in the same makeup. I'm probably mistaken.

All the flaws and the imperfections in this video - 240 p included - is why it is so awesome it's just the perfect representation of an amateur work.
Really congrats to everyone involved in the making - you all did an awesome job maybe without even noticing it which is the main reason why it's that good - innocence in the process.

I remember seeing this video years ago, and loving it back then, too. Every so often I come back to it. The woman in this is absolutely beautiful, she has that "there's just something about her" element.

Why is this clip just so damn good? It's one of my favourite music videos of all time, almost zero production cost and just absolutely fantastic. Captures the song much better than the official music video. Dammit I love this clip.

I read an article about this once... apparently MGMT were so impressed with the video that they asked them to come and be in Electric Feel... the same article said that the girl had a crush on the guy and this that's why they did the video... it's just them painted like Kiss behind Christmas lights mixed in with clips of people dancing.... brilliantly simple, real chemistry between people who really you can tell, really enjoy the song

He captured real emotions in this video, that's why people feel it so much.
Raf was upset over wearing the face paint, and you can see his emotional pain and indifference
Abby had a crush on the guy who is filming and you can see the love and attraction on her face. She was trying to sort of show off for him.
But yeah, it's really a beautiful video because of those two things. Because of how real the emotions on the camera are.
That backstory adds so much, thank you. And explains so much. I had assumed they were directed like this and were just really good amatuer actors, but the fact that the guy was infact totally over it and annoyed with the makeup while the girl is having a blast helping out her crush while flirting with him behind the camera makes absolute sense. 💯

I never knew that this wasn't an official video. Like I knew there's the other one, I just figured they made two of them or something. For a class, this is pretty amazing. Of course everyone can't stop talking about the girl, but I love how they're so opposite of each other throughout the video. He's so serious and doesn't show any positive emotions, whereas she is bouncing around and can't stop smiling. I also love that little look away from the camera thing she does at 1:13

A lot of the times, people forget that we, the audience, are the camera. Abby looking at the camera guy with so much love in her eyes is like she's looking at all of us.
It's kind of beautiful, like a flower. She just comes off with this enthusiasm and happiness to be alive, and she's trying to share it with us through her body language and everything... so it makes everybody feel good inside
