One of the most innovated, original thinking writer/directors today. Unique in style and substance. M Night's endings always have a uniquely satisfying unpredictable twist at the end ..intelligent plots, original, the characters enthralling. But that's me. Then take a look at his book - I've Been Schooled. Genius. Who today thinks outside the box like this man?
A very insightful, deeply meaningful message by Night. He's so subtle when he speaks, almost like his movies. He's a fantastic filmmaker! A good writer.
I'm a big Mel Gibson fan. I thought he was excellent as usual in "Signs". There was an eerie unsettling tone throughout the whole movie, and it had some genuine scare scenes. I personally loved the the strong bond the brother and sister shared. Altogether, it worked for me.
There is a type of subtle racism that has made him, unjustly, the butt of jokes. At least he has made several decent (if not really good) movies. That's more that can be said for many other directors.
Yeah, I get that a lot. What can I say, I really liked "The Village", my type of film. And as for "Signs", Mel Gibson's my favorite actor, so I'm a little biased.
I have a theory that Shyamalan was all alone in his basement about 10 years ago when a sledgehammer fell on his head. He didn't know what happened at all, noticed there was a sledgehammer on the floor, picked it up, put it away, and never could say what really happened.
Fun fact, Secrets of Cinema is shot in the basement of M. Night's home written, directed and produced by the greatest gift to cinema, M. Night Shyamalan.
Just scrolling down the comments below, and it seems people just don't give this guy a break. Come on now, "The Sixth Sense", "Signs", "The Village" and "Unbreakable" were all great films. How can one ever crucify any director who gave us 4 stellar films? Not to mention he wrote them too.
Were you super busy Sunday & Monday or the other days you've been on here since then Forgot to check your inbox or that was just the only reply you could think after seeing my comment two+ weeks ago?
idk...why do you think that? To me, he knows precisely what he's doing. Making movies that he wants to make. He's not a sell-out filmmaker. Nolan makes films he wants to make, and Shyamalan is no exception, regardless of what the majority thinks of his films. Personally, like Nolan's films, I like all of Night's work. I got no problem with even the worst received by critics like The Last Airbender, Lady in the Water, and The Happening.
***** That might be true, but no artist of any sort can improve without constructive criticism and from what I've seen from interviews of this guy, all he does is resort to the "they just don't understand my work, it's too deep for them" argument. It's great that you like his films, but as a director, he's not a good one because he lets his arrogance get in the way which recently has led to him making films that are less than stellar compared to what he's truly capable of. He doesn't seem so bad in this video, but others like that one where he blames the failure of TLA on American critics hating him was just ridiculous.
punkgrl325 I totally agree that artists need constructive criticism. Regarding Night, I do not think what he says proves him to be arrogant. He's simply being honest to a likely reality. What people say about his movies actually prove misunderstanding & bias. When those guys review his movies, most of them do not directly reflect the film itself accurately. That is not constructive criticism of his movies.
you cannot watch the Avatar cartoon series, without realizing it is a great show with incredibly profound subliminal messages that teach kids to do good. and then watch his interpretation and think he's a credible director. you dont get worse at your job with the more experience. you just got lucky in the past. plus he has large amounts of money to basically fund any thing he wants which is what he did. in order to direct you really have to love the story. and this guy loved nothing but profit.
dude m night has created some of the most well known and shocking movies of all time and i admit he has made a lot of crap to, but until you can direct things like signs and the sixth sense you have no right to call him dumb
Village, Signs, Lady in the Water, The Happening, Last Airbender are 5 out of 12 movies he directed and that were not critically acclaimed. That's a few to me. Until his next one bombs, then we can talk. Good day.
you know... maybe the stories in his movies are bad, maybe the dialogue is horrible but, if you think about it, at least most of the filming and visuals are great, if he only did the visuals and left the drama, dialogue and characters for someone else to craft, he could make great movies
This guy is nowhere near as bad as Michael Bay. Signs, The Village, The Happening were fine movies that were critically panned. I don't care what anyone says. He very skillfully created an ambiance of realistic fear. Clint Eastwood made several flops in a row during the early stages in his directing career after initial success. Can this guy write a script like Tarantino or PT Anderson? Hell no. Has he started aiming for box office numbers? Maybe. But I have no doubt this guy has talent.
Hmmm, so that means I shouldn't be an Actor? At times I've felt I need to act to stay alive... I don't have much experience but i'm studying it and learning in a workshop currently cuz I feel i can't live without it. Then at times I don't feel that way, i feel I hate it, but I love it... idk it's weird. I also feel the same about music, I can't live without that one either.. can't I do both>? Jammie Fox kind of deal? I make music on Ableton and have been writing lyrics sense I was 16. I'm 20 now
No, that's not what I mean at all, he ruined something that had already been a success. That takes incredible skill. As such we should all regard him a threat to other things that work perfectly well, like physics.
M Knight is definitely a much better film maker than all of his detractors that post comments about him. But the cool thing about him is that I bet if his detractors made movies that sucked he wouldn't be anywhere close as harsh to them as they are o him.
He's kind of a hit and miss to me. I love Signs and Unbreakable, but I hate The Village and The Happening. I liked Lady in the Water but hated The Last Airbender. I respect him but in recent years he doesn't really seem to know what he wants to do.
I agree. Even though he has made some silly movies recently, he has proven he has talent. He made 3 great movies. 6th sense, unbreakable, signs. The village wasn’t great but it was decent. I hope to see him return to his original form one day. I have faith in him
I just don't understand how a director capable of producing awesome movies like The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable and Signs, can then go and churn out shit like The Happening, The Last Airbender and After Earth. A little consistency would completely revolutionise the bad image this guy is creating for himself.
And if that "must've failed kindergarten" was referring to me, I must have failed kindergarten because I think he made a few messed up movies? Really? To say that was a fail all in itself.
This guy is the industry/company type of director; Zero artistic flair. He's there, willing and waiting to be used, only to make sure the film gets made and is somewhat intact. But he's not the only one. This is the sad business side of film-making.
Bullshit. There is nothing objective about your opinion. The Village was an entertaining and surprising film, but Signs was a masterful movie. You're just off when it comes to those two. Most people will disagree with you on Signs, but many will agree with you on The Village, because of the heavier requirement on the audience to suspend disbelief in that film (like how those people would go unnoticed for years, etc)
Yes he was a good director then but all his recent movies were terrible he went from good to terrible lotsa people were big fans of his but because of his recent terrible movies it changed there minds.
Only The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable were great films. Sings had millions of very stupid plot holes and The Village was kinda boring and it felt like he wasn't sure what he wanted to make.
They were clones of each other. If you had seen one you've seen them all. All those movies are literally made from the same pattern. The man is a one trick pony!
The sixth Sense was good but because it was really the only "good" movie he made it gets over hyped. Unbreakable -critics on RT don't concider it "fresh." Signs & the village...equally bad. Then once you factor in all the other bad movies he's made? Theres a difference between crucifying him and disliking his movies & if it wasn't for his biggest blunder The last airbender I'd feel bad for him...but he just needs to stop making bad movies, & if that means he needs to stop directing, so be it.
M. Night Shyamalan please. You were promising at first but then i saw the happening. I mean, fucking trees man.. come on, i know you're better than that. Also, enough of the fucking twists. It takes you out of film when you're guessing the fucking twist because you know there's going to be one. Also, when you make a bad movie, don't blame the critics. (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻
People literally act like M. Night is the ONLY filmmaker in history to make a disappointing movie. They don't point fingers at James Cameron, Spielberg, or whoever else, and those individuals are my heroes, and they are genius writers and directors, but I'm not gonna sit here and say everything they have made was gold. When I read "M. Night Shyamalan is the WORST director of ALL TIME." I just have to laugh. And that's somebody's opinion, and I respect it, but c'mon. Give the guy a break.
"I think Unbreakable is one of the masterpieces of our time."
- Quentin Tarantino
He is actually one of the greatest directors of our time.
Let the audience learn to watch.
+Edward Blake (The Comedian) uhuh
@@Xectopuslol m knight is god!

Subtle? He's rambling he gets a message once or twice but he takes way to long.
Mekkkor Everything he says serves a purpose. You are not listening. This is considered selective listening on your part.
***** i personally think his films suck horribly.
Dmitri Lessy I watched almost every Night film, and love each of them deeply. After Earth is also brilliant!
***** is your name m. night shyamalan?
How nice would it be if he made a film that just suddenly became as good as the Sixth Sense again.
David Ryan What a twist!
well he did. a couple of them actually
Signs split unbreakable sixth sense and glass is gonna be good
Last air bender was his best movie GOTTA GO
I loved, Signs.
I'm a big Mel Gibson fan. I thought he was excellent as usual in "Signs". There was an eerie unsettling tone throughout the whole movie, and it had some genuine scare scenes. I personally loved the the strong bond the brother and sister shared. Altogether, it worked for me.

HIM AND TARANTINO MIGHT GET ALONG.
This guy takes chances - even to his detriment sometimes. I respect that in this world of remakes and big biz movies.
Great guy!
He has lost his touch but can still give a damn good speech
Yeah, I get that a lot. What can I say, I really liked "The Village", my type of film. And as for "Signs", Mel Gibson's my favorite actor, so I'm a little biased.
this guy is an awesome director, just coz he screwed a few movies doesnt mean the end of the world
He seems like a lovely guy, if only he were a better director...
+Alan Smithee he is a good director who wants us to believe he sucks. What a twist!
TWIST!
"I was so touched" poor choice of words! haha
I have a theory that Shyamalan was all alone in his basement about 10 years ago when a sledgehammer fell on his head. He didn't know what happened at all, noticed there was a sledgehammer on the floor, picked it up, put it away, and never could say what really happened.

Straight up genius right there. God among men.

Love him.
Great director indeed ...*cracks up*
Michael Bay tops everything in all categories. Roland Emmerich being a close one too
what a great director ...
my favourite director
Were you super busy Sunday & Monday or the other days you've been on here since then Forgot to check your inbox or that was just the only reply you could think after seeing my comment two+ weeks ago?
you're right about the first and the last!
We need him for physics. He'll be able to destroy the currently established laws of physics and enable feasible space travel to other galaxies.
You know, if this guy didn't have James Bond's ego, he would be better
Yeah, okay. I believe it.
Any kannadigas after Lucia making video and learnt Pawan Kumar U turn secret..
"Those that we don't speak of" hilarious
He talks the talk. Now if only he could walk the walk..
So would you watch a movie after seeing a trailer that says: From The Protégé of M. Night Shyamalan?
His movies are pretentious and at times obnoxious, but I think that he will surprise us one day with another classic masterpiece.
hell yea mate
*shivers*
Love his enthusiasm. The Village is Awesome
He's like Christopher Nolan except he doesn't know what he's doing anymore!
idk...why do you think that? To me, he knows precisely what he's doing. Making movies that he wants to make. He's not a sell-out filmmaker. @JayteePhandango Avatar? He had nothing to do with that movie, that was James Cameron.
He's not a bad director, just a bad writer.

Beg your pardon?
secrets of films don't hire m night shyamalan for starters.
Great? Not so sure about that. Certainly, when you're comparing them in contrast to his latest films, they may appear so.
M. Night Shyamalan telling us the secrets of cinema? Oh the irony.
OH I KNOW THIS!!! THE SECRET OF CINEMA IS DON'T DO WHAT THIS GUY IS DOING =D WHAT DO I WIN!?

I can't believe u guys keep shitting on him. He made great movies!!!!!! The Last Airbender revolutionized filming & the avatar franchise
@SexyLizerd That would be the "twist" of his career.
Step in: AFTER EARTH.
oh god...
Saw the title.
Spat out my coffee.
Was lying on the floor laughing for 5 minutes solid.
2:40 This is the most pathetic, bitter ramble I've ever heard.
M.Night Shame About Your Last Movie

Nah, I'm just too super busy with projects to even have some free time to check back.
You see, Im Asian [badjoke/]
He's just a guy with rich parents to fund all of this.
AM I THE ONLY ONE WHO THOUGHT THE SITH SENSE SUCKED?
I read the screenplay for Unbreakable, he's got nothing to brag about there. He should stick to directing.
objectively, The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable are the classic and good films. but not "Signs" and "The Village".

On this again, are we? Do something else with your life. I'm over it.
M night needs to get away from these big budget blockbuster style films, and make slow burning personal films, with a supernatural twist..
I'm easily gonna get such heat for that comment, but oh well. Hahaha.
He reminds me of Aziz Ansari for some reason.
That's racist.
I hope Shyamalan doesn't teach a film class when if retires from filmmaking.

No, you must have failed kindergarten if you think half of an amount is few.
Shyamalan My man... most inspiring & talented director of all time.
'CUT THE FU*ING CRAP HATERS BELOW'!!
Signs was the most overrated movie I've ever seen.
What? NO!
