I'm not even an animator and even I know dancing is one of the easiest things to make look good (which is why dance scenes in anime are always top class). It's because they usually choreograph and film the dance in real life with a professional and then use it as reference for the animation.
A lot of the time when animating regular scenes, you only have your experience as an animator to go on and not a huge amount of reference footage. You can even just rotoscope the reference footage to make it even smoother. Not trying to downplay their achievements but just wanted to point out that it isn't insanely difficult in comparison to normal animation, it's the final product that looks insanely good compared to it.
(Off the top of my head there's the Chika and Haruhi ED dances that looks equally good for the same reasons).

Respect for wanting to call it donghua, and recognizing that it's a Chinese animation, when so many people insist on lumping multiple country's animations into the term "anime" without asking or knowing whether the creators or that country's viewers would appreciate that.

    • @samuraijosh1595

Yoshi Kirishima I think Anime has become a generalised term just like how we would be calling consoles nintendos if nintendo wasnt successful in stopping consumers from generisising the term, essentially the point is Japan was too influential that it essentially everyone called the products by their name, like how a decent amount people basically ignore the manhwa manhua manga distinction and just call them manga.

I know right some people avoid it because it's gay. While it's a very great show. And the novel is also a great one. There is also not a single smut scene only kissing few time, that also only in the later series. And if anyone wants to checkout hob, pls listen its not a heavy plot driven story but more of a character driven slice of life with action and romance.

Extremely funny almost parody levels, lots of trauma, and not too explicit/gratuitous BL when the romantic domesticity, kissing, and devotion is where it’s at. While solving side quests ofc
Also, the official English translations of the source novel are beginning to be published later Dec. 2021 in North America, so 🥳

Dont get me wrong, I loved it
Season 2 feels slightly weaker to me tho. Way too many too drawn out fight scenes - they were epic, but I feel some of them couldve been shorter tbh - and a shit ton of repetition, because they later added a new viewpoint. In general, getting a new viewpoint is interesting, but it feels like some of these scenes were too drawn out for how little extra info we got.
If S1 was like an 11/10, S2 was a 9/10 for me, you know what i mean? Still amazing, but slight downgrade. Hyped for S3 tho and seeing what Lu got up to for him to say that he broke the most important time travelling rule for Cheng and how it all connects

I can't express how EXACTLY this show catered to what I've been wanting in a show for so long since Stein's;Gate, Death Parade, Mushishi, and Madoka, everything about it was great; really cool and unique powers, time travel angst, episodic stories that actually make you care about the one off characters and what happens to them, cliffhangers and plot twists in almost every episode, a main plot stirring up in the undercurrent that eventually takes over in the last episodes, main characters with a wholesome brotherhood that we don't learn everything about all at once (and one still a mystery by the end of the season), FANTASTIC opening and ending themes (the former giving a sense of sadness in preparation for the feels you'll likely experience in the episode, and the latter giving you anxiety for what the next episode will bring) and a BRUTAL cliffhanger ending that left me screaming for more. The last time something made me feel this way was the indie game Sally Face, which got better and better as each chapter came out, I hope this show proves the same with its future seasons!

As a chinese-born-american guy, I would frequently hear my parents talk about their time in the countryside, or express common small sentiments that the parents did in the anime. The whole basketball arc had me in emotional tears, and the college side story was pretty relatable - as opposed to how Americans present college as an orgy or some edgy nerd bait, studies are pretty integral but also can be pretty fun (well I'd imagine more fun in America since it's easier...).
Even just hearing them talk in chinese with the common intonations and common idioms brings back very visceral memories, from I don't know where but probably an amalgamation of, y'know, my lived experience. And the topics they talk about are **very** common in chinese culture.
Am I praising chinese culture? Not really. But does this anime immerse me in it? Hell yes.
Really opened my eyes to just how important language & context can be when consuming media.

And by GOD will they make sure you've eaten well. Even if you gained 3000kg and are full from the 7th lasagna, they will continue feeding you. Even if there is a blizzard and the end of the world, they will drop everything they had planned and go fast like Sonic and Initial D style to your house as soon as you tell them that you're hungry.

For all the people who are saying 'oh, i dont trust the CCP's products', this show, and many other donghua shows are made by independent studios / media companies who try to find loopholes to give ppl the content they want ie. Haoliners and Youku with their BL. The policies don't mandate anything about what companies need to put into their content, only restricts them from putting outright slander against the party (And explicit sex/violence) *IF* a company wishes to broadcast their show on TV - which honestly I don't see as a problem since most animated shows don't discuss legitimate politics anyways. A lot of the shows are adaptations of popular online novels/web series.

I feel like one of the reasons Link Click isn't that well known or talked about in the west, is as always with stuff from China, their intended, target audience.
Link Click is targeted towards Mainland Chinese millennials and gen Z. This is clear on it's own from the first episode- this is the kind of stuff teens in mainland China in university fears, new workers face, missing home, the vast difference from where they grew up to the city they now live in, caused by the rapidly developing country. This all hits much harder for Chinese teens than any westerners.
And the second, there's the earthquake. 12th May. Any Chinese person would stop and realized the weight of that day. 2008, 12th May. The day where an actual earthquake took place in Mainland China and killed over thousands, destroyed hundreds upon thousands of homes. This hits much, much harder for them, for the people who watched this tragedy happen, who had relatives in the area and with how tight-knit Chinese families are this has a much, much bigger impact than you could've imagined. Everything that sets up to it too. The clouds, the accents of the people, the environment and struggles the people Cheng Xiaoshi had to live through, so many of them are so realistic to them, to us.
Third, all of these stories, are based of real life, actual events in mainland China.
These things have happened. These side stories are real. Someone really lost their son, people actually died in the earthquake on 12th of May 2008. There used to be someone, maybe not named Emma, but have been through the exact same shit. And this hits so much goddamn harder.
Thennnn there's the cultural and language barrier.
China has it's one set of humour, online words and memes that a lot of westerners aren't aware of due to, well, lack of information or misinformation. And honestly it's a hazzle to translate. Then there's the issue of translators. I have... Yet to see a piece of Chinese media translated correctly as in, in a way where there will be no confusion and the original meaning will be preserved without making it awkward or sacrificing it's original humour. There IS a way to do it. But it takes a LOT of time. And honestly? China has a big enough market for companies to earn a shit ton of money, they can care less about what shitty translations westerners get, it's not like they'll appreciate their work, right?
At least, this seems to be the stance they take, judging from their actions.
People have had years to understand and get to know Japanese culture. They understand the humour in animes and the general lives of the Japanese, at least enough to sympathise, to understand slice of life animes from Japan and think they can resonate, they can feel sympathy. China... Doesn't have that. People don't understand the details of Chinese culture, they don't know how the Chinese millennials grew up like the back of their hand, they don't remember specific dates that scarred the entire country. They don't know our legends. People know what Kitsunes are, but do they know who 'zhinu' is? Our culture has been closed off from the world due to misinformation, hate and racism for so long. And this all contributed to our media, now finally gaining some attention, not getting the recognition internationally they deserve.
I hope this sheds light on the entire situation for Donghua. It's a shame that people dismisses these beautiful works of art just like this... Thanks for reading my rant!
Sincerely, someone stuck between two cultures.

Brother, your analysis is very good. But you have overlooked one of the most important issues. This anime or other anime you don't know about. Just because of the lack of distribution channels and publicity channels. Thus it is underestimated. In fact, Chinese dramas and songs are very popular on TH-cam. They also have the problem you describe. But they have distribution channels. There are many TV series distribution platforms. For example, wetv, iQiyi, Youku, etc., have millions of fans. At the same time, some Chinese songs are also widely spread through tiktok. So they go very far!

fun fact about the ed of this anime + spoilers alert
after the end of this season, someone on Chinese media noticed that in the ed of this anime, the beginning part where the ringtone was playing, you can hear someone saying "lu guang, you're so miserable" (路光,你好惨啊) in the background. This sentence had been there the entire season and yet it only came to the surface after lu guang was hurt and the season ended. People on social media are speculating that it was there to foreshadow and some are saying that it was an accident; they accidentally recorded someone speaking in the background.

Link click needs a reevaluation after season 2. The way they pulled off season 2 was absolutely stellar. To me the stories of the “antagonists” was far more heartbreaking than anything in season one and the whole thing is just executed so well. They managed to broaden the scope of the story by introducing many new characters while giving all of them so much development and emotional impact in such a short amount of time. Hopefully link click can still keep this up as the story has broadened even more going into season 3
