He had to do that because of what George W had allowed the banks to get away with. The crash came near the end of W's administration, and Obama pulled the US out of it. But if the public can't spend money and the banks are too broke to spend money, then the government has to spend money, or you won't have a country left. So Obama had to do the bailout to fix the mess that he had NOT caused. However, Obama also put new regulations on the banks that they could no longer create any such hedge funds unless they first provided a written plan on how they will bail themselves out next time instead of the taxpayers.
