    1. Pick a coffee shop 15 - 20 miles from your house, with a very safe route. Practice that route weekly, then twice a week, and then three times per week as legs and your new-to-cycling-bum allows.
    2.Add another safe loop to hit 50 miles after step one is easy.
    *** Take notes throughout steps 1 and 2 that might indicate improper fit. Do not delay in asking your bike shop for fine-tuning your bike fit to relieve any pains that are not attributed to your form, or lack of fitness.

      Click Bait bro that is genius. Need to start training for a sportive later this year and by start I mean 'need motivation to do more than the 10km round trip to work'. Picked a highly reviewed independent cafe with a route into the countryside, gonna ride there tomorrow and see if I like it :)

      My quads have been aching after completing 42 miles in under 2 hours and 50 minutes. I'm weighing in around 180-190. Had to climb a short & steep hill to get back home, had no choice as it was getting dark out by the time I made mile number 40. Ride on!

      Hey man, just wondering how much you weigh now? Been struggling with my weight, lifting weights, and doing "cardio" off and on for a good ten years or so. I've lost weight before, but I always get tired of doing it, and put the weight back on - currently at 260 lbs., so I'm hoping that getting into cycling will be more fun and sustainable than just going to the gym for "cardio."

    I rode 8 miles on my Huffy last week. It took me 9 hours because my fork welds separated on a steep decent and I went off over the side of a 200 ft embankment. I woke up after 3 hours due to a concussion. Took me 2 hours to hike back up the embankment with a shattered ankle.

    I've been an XC mountain biker for about 4 years now and got my first Road Bike a week ago. On my fourth ride out on it I did 50 miles. So if you're thinking about going from an MTB to a road bike I'd say do it, you chew up the miles easily as you're used to more weight and rolling resistance.

    Just finished my first 50 mile'r today, I'm 14, and my advice is just do it, don't think about the ride at all, just go! Fuelwise, I drank maybe 3/4 a bottle and ate one banana the whole ride, didn't stop once, not even at intersections. So just do the ride, don't kill yourself at the beginning, and HAVE FUN!!!!

    Something said here reminded me of a training tip offered to first time marathon runners: "force yourself to run slightly slower than you feel comfortable in the first 1/3rd of the marathon, the second 1/3rd force yourself to run your normal pace and in the final 1/3rd, force yourself to run." It's good advise really.

    Hi GCN!
    I finished my first 50 mile sportive event yesterday. I could have been about 30 mins faster, if not for a couple of tactical mistakes and a butt load of cramps (literally) in the final 3rd of the race.
    But, no complaints! If it weren't for you, I'd probably be 20 mins slower and who knows how much less informed as a beginner cyclist!
    What I am trying to say is -- thank you very much for the great content!
    You make TH-cam what it's meant to be.
    Cheers from Scandinavia!

    I just did 51 miles today, in 3:38hr which I'm very pleased about, especially seeing as it was a very hilly route around Macclesfield & Bosley area & then on to Alderley edge via Congleton. We went offroad on a muddy canal path for a few miles, so our time could of been quite a bit better. Also I'm not on a road bike, I'm on a Trek dual sport hybrid.

    I'm about to do a MTB ride from home to Snowdon then climb it. I'ts 50 miles a day for 2 days then day 3 climb Snowdon and ride to the coast with backpack containing overnight clothes and food and tools etc. I've got 3 weeks to train so these videos are a help!. Although i'd like see more about MTB rides over these distances, it's a bit experimental.

    Great timing on the video! I'm tagging along with my riding group on a 45 mile Saturday. My wife and I are used to the 20-26 range and my long ride is just under 30. So this is a huge jump for me. I guess my biggest change will be swapping out my water for coconut water and bringing a candy bar or two in addition to gels.

    It wasn't 50 miles, but I did 48 miles in 3 hrs 30 minutes Sunday on a local path of crushed limestone. It was the longest I have ever gone and it was fun! (I'm incredibly new to cycling..I run and lift primarily..but since turning 40 a couple years ago Ive found I just can't run or lift like I used to). I def need to learn how to evenly pace myself. I'm looking at the splits from that ride, some miles are 17-18mph early on, then the last 10 miles or so had plenty of 10-12 mph avg. I guess as a newbie too...don't get hung up on speed too much. I"m not going to be winning any races..just enjoy a few hours outside, clear your head.

    My 7th bike ride was on Sunday. Only ever did just short of 15 miles. But for that 7th I went out with friends expecting I’d stop early if I needed to. Finished all 50.44 miles in 3:18. Granted it was only a total elevation gain of 865ft but had to start somewhere. Although at 38 miles on the way back my legs started to cramp. Luckily today I’m up and about feeling well. Tired but that’s all. We’ll see what tomorrow bring 😅. Regardless I’m proud of myself.

    I generally do a 50-70 ml'er (4hrs) once a wk then fast rides on Tues & Thurs and some tick over rides Mon, Wed, Fri..rest days are thrown in..mental and physically.
    The thing about a long, biggish ride is that there'll be times when you have to push on and some times when you can ride easy and times when to rest ie downhills... - everyone can do them...

    Excellent advice...Of course you can compare your time with the pros. But pacing yourself for the achievement is what counts. You can probably count the people who start out fast and do 50 miles today, tomorrow and the next day...they're in few.

      Jimmy Earle what the fuck does this have to do with now... or anything... the dude pushed him self like NO ONE else would... or has... have you even thought that that was almost a century ago..... it has nothing to do with water and electrolytes.. dont bring that shit into here... lmfao... the dude had to re learn how to fucking walk after he broke his record... that has NOTHING to do with electrolytes and water... he just pushed himself real hard... why would anyone want to do that in this time... when there are MANY better things to do. thats why people dont do it. not because he drank fucking water LMFAO
      and even if it did make a point(which it doesnt) riders can do way more than that now with the proper fuel... notice how his record was being broken by more than 2k+ miles halfway through the year?(before he injured himself apparently) yeah i bet you didnt notice.. too busy thinking how good your tap water is.. youre stuck in 1939 dude.. its fucking 2015.. get some fucking electrolytes in your body and perform better.. or keep drinking tap water and sucking your 1939 idols dick for doing something he dedicated himself too that not many people would even attempt nowadays because of money/time problems...

    lol funny thing is that, me and two other mates decided to ride about 62 miles without any preparation and we did it somehow
    it was in Hong Kong from Tai Po > Ma On Shan > Sai Kung then back 30~miles. it was done within 1pm to 6pm

    Would have loved if you guys talked a bit more about pacing on long rides using data from a HRM and/or PM

    • @dee-jay-gee-bee7659
      @dee-jay-gee-bee7659 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      MrYawdie Someone building up to their first 50mi is unlikely to have a HRM or PM and will just be riding on feel/keeping an eye on their average speed.

    • @MrYawdie
      @MrYawdie 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Dee-Jay-Gee-Bee HRM costs $40-60. If you have a road bike and a bike computer chances are you probably have a HRM (or could easily afford one) as well. Plus average speed is useless as a pacing tool because you will be working harder and going slower in a headwind, climb, gravel road, etc...

    • @gcn
      @gcn  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      MrYawdie we will do more on pacing in the future using those tools.

    • @dee-jay-gee-bee7659
      @dee-jay-gee-bee7659 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      MrYawdie Maybe so, but I'm coming from the position of someone who hasn't ridden more than 50mi (on my first sportive last year - well I did 100K in total that day with extra bits of toing & froing pre & post ride that day) and I don't have an HRM or PM, just a basic bike computer and I use my Garmin running watch to record big/fast rides. And that's on a hybrid. I wouldn't say average speed is useless either, you just have to adjust to the conditions - so expect to do 10mph up hill etc. Makes you use your brain more if you haven't got constant streams of different data laid out for you. I've no idea what kind of wattage I put out, what kind of bpms I hit, how many kgs of force I push, how fast my cadence is, etc etc and the only way I know if I'm in my sweet spot or not is in paying attention to how my body feels. Old school for the paupers on two wheels...

    • @dee-jay-gee-bee7659
      @dee-jay-gee-bee7659 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      ***** Nice. I'm sure I'll get one further down the line (got my eye on a [second-hand] bundle of Edge 500 [Red], Premium HRM & GSC 10 speed/cadence sensor), but I don't see it as necessary/vital for start-up cyclists. As long as you're getting up those hills and not dying afterwards/able to continue at a reduced pace then I wouldn't scare yourself with knowing exactly how much higher your average heart rate has shot up. I'd be more concerned with getting the miles in my legs than doing those same miles at a lower heart rate, but everyone has targets and set-ups specific to them, so if it's working for you then fine. Leave something to achieve on the day, so don't ride more than say 40mi before the sportive, then it's more special/rewarding. Don't overdo it either. Also, as recently mentioned in one of Si's vids, don't tinker with your bike the night before; I over inflated my tyres just putting that unneccessary tiny bit extra in, meaning I had to muck about changing a blown innertube the day before - my first in 3 years! Enjoy your sportive and eat as many free bananas & flapjacks as you can handle on every stop available! :)

    I've gotten quite into cycling in the last couple months, I have about 500 miles down in the past 45 days, going for 1000 this month =) My first long ride was 60 miles, not recommended for the tender ass, but your rear will get used to it eventually. Also the extra 50 pounds it helped me lose I bet was part of the equation.

    Get up nice and early and "carb the fcuk up." After breakfast, apply sunscreen liberally, start out nice and easy, hold a steady pace, and maintain a pedal cadence of 70-90 RPM. However, first you'll need to build on base miles during the week if you want to challenge yourself to longer rides on the weekends. Plan on at least 4 to 5 shorter training rides to serve as your base miles. Then on the weekends you will be better prepared both physically and mentally. Carry plenty of water and sugary snacks as it can take up to 2 hours or more to cover a 25-mile solo ride. Also, carry money just in case you run out of food. You don't want to bonk on your first long ride. When you finish make sure you "carb the fcuk up" and take a nice long nap in the afternoon if you can. Remember, rest is just as important as training. The next morning go for a leisurely Sunday ride with your wife or friends and enjoy your good health and fortune. Rinse and repeat. ;-)

    Any possibility of doing an over 100 mile video anytime soon. The reason I ask is I'm signed up for a charity cycle ride from Newcastle to Manchester at the end of July and I've only ever cycled 60 in a day. Never thought it through before saying yes.

    Riding 50 miles is not difficult unless
    a)You're on your gravel bike
    b)Your return leg is an ascent of about 1300m over last 25 km
    c)There's a headwind of 25km/h while on ascent.
    Had to take an anti-inflammatory pill to keep the fever at bay. Check your weather mates

    The best I can do is 16 miles, I can never do any further than that, as soon as I get to the 15 miles mark, I just break down and gradually get slower and slower until I can no longer carry on and have to get the bus back home, hopefully I can push myself to reach 20? 👍🏻😄

    I'm a pretty active runner, mostly just run 1 hour on a treadmill at 6-7 min/mile pace and just transitioned to cycling a month ago after buying a carbon bike. Did 50 in 2:22:56 today, it was fun! Thanks for the fueling tip, that's what was tripping me up because I was just drinking red bulls before going and then I would hit the wall with just water.

      I have a mountain bike, but definitely wouldn't do 50 miles on it. I just bought a road bike. It only cost $2000 and I've put over 140 miles on it in a little over a week, including a 33 miles ride. Doing a 50 miles ride this weekend, but it'll be completely flat along Florida's Gulf Coast.
