Should We Play Bass in Stereo?! | The Janek Gwizdala Podcast

  • For pedal fans and signal chain nerds, mono vs stereo is going to come up once in a while and it's a tough call to make when you consider the incredible options available today to widen your sound. From reverbs and delays to all kinds of modulation and panning effects, there is an almost infinite library to draw inspiration from.
The more real-life questions for gigging musicians are:
Do you really want to carry two sets of cabinets and two amps with you?
Are you willing to use in-ear monitors as a lighter/more portable option?
Maybe you've never even considered some of the benefits of running effects in stereo when you play live, so you’re asking yourself “wtf is all this about?!”
This episode of the podcast is a nerdy deep dive on a few of the things I'm looking at incorporating into a stereo rig to tour with my own band, that’s not going to weigh 800lbs or take three hours to set up every night!
We’re going to feature some sounds in the HX Stomp throughout the episode and I know I promised the new pack of presets months ago.
It is on its way! I just want it to be right before I put it out into the world. In the meantime, the Janek Gwizdala “Signature Pack” is still available janekgwizdala....
and for everyone who asks about crossover between the old and new: There will be nothing from the old pack in the new one. It will be 100% new sounds.
That’s probably why it’s taking so long.
    I appreciate your patience.
    More soon,
    Janek

Check out the KMA Endgame for a stereo DI. It is geared toward guitar players, but you can load your own IRs in it. The ambient and double tracking controls can really thicken your stereo signal.

Your *HX Stomp* _sound pack_ is going to be amazing, will it work with the *HX Effects* too?

+1 for this. My bass rig is centered around an HX Effects and would love for Janek's sounds to work on it.

This was very informative. The only time I run my signal in stereo is when using a delay. So many different ideas that you presented here. Definitely going to keep me busy for a while longer while putting together my new pedalboard.

Hey Janek, long time fine of your channel, your books, your music, your perspective on bass! A general question for you and everyone in the community - when using preamp/DI pedals, compressors, etc, do you experience noise? If so, how have you been able to deal with it? Been struggling with noise issues on my board for some time now, hoping to get some wisdom! Love from India, hope to see you here some day!

Great video, mono is so standard, it's great to get a professional giving an "objective" view on using stereo.

In a small ensemble, bass in stereo is great. I just ran a H9 w Morningstar mc6 and an Aeros looper.
Unless you use exact same rigs you could have some phasing issues. I got many compliments at gigs on my bass sound but ultimately it proved to be just too much hassle. I don’t know. I may go back when I can afford another rig to it tough to say. It was very inspirational though for my playing.

I run a stereo rig frequently (and even a tri-amp rig for some doom metal shenanigans where I need to sound like a bass and two fuzzed-out guitarists all at once) in order to be able to make a good variety of fairly niche sounds (stereo spread Leslie/rotary, fuzz with clean, octave distortion with clean, fuzz and octave distortion in parallel, sub octave and clean, cheating a mono reverb/delay earlier in the signal into a stereo, time delaying one output so when I do the doom stuff it sounds like multiple people playing in the room, etc etc). While I can run both signals into one amp if I use my stack, but I’ve found being able to have each amp handle its own portion of the load greatly improves the quality of the sound in the end so it’s worth it to me

1 thing to bare in mind with the big Meris pedals, from what I've seen and heard, the LVX is not very plug in and play friendly. You have to really programme it yourself from scratch. Whereas the Mercury X is a lot better for just getting great sounds straight away with their own presets

Man, I'm so excited for the new preset drop! I've been having a blast with the current Sig Pack. It's been pushing me to express myself melodically in such a fun and creative way. Thanks, Janek!

I play ambient bass and create ambient Soundscapes and huge long ethereal pads so stereo is a must.. I have a stereo set up with a lot of stereo pedals..The pedals today are amazing including Meris Mercury X,Chase Bliss Onward,Red Panda Raster 2 etc..If I played in a rock band it would be mono..

    Why not Jamek !
Started doing stereo in 1978 and a Bryston Pawer amp. Sound was huge. Not a peral huge it was huge and spread out . Pads and usual stuff we hear now.
You hear it ? Go for it I think it suits you ! Also , this bass the 4 string has something very very important that you Connect with. It’s like *truth* or roots whatever it is something berry important imho . Fwiw . I’m just a dude on the internet.
All above said I so not not say any or this easily or lightly. I feel a connect that is really important.
    • Not saying out away thr 5 at all. Perhaps simply roots ? •
    Great to hear you

Never owned a Stomp since I kind of bought into the Fractal ecosystem, they have some really good and usable presets on their systems. Sadly it's very guitar-centric but there is some usable bass stuff as well, not just that much.

Stuck around to the end because I'm a fan AND I was super fuckin' bored (of work) 🤣but that [REDACTED] surprise you dropped at the end has me EXTRA EXCITED TO HEAR! That sounds like a gnarly project!
Now, I'm going to have to try my hand at making some stereo bass patches on my HX Stomp XL 😁Great episode, Janek!

Have you thought about trying the Mooer Ocean Machine larger footprint but was developed with Devon Townsend. Not sure if quality of sounds and build but used they’re very accessible

Hi Janek love your quest for musical actualisation. I have both the Dark World which sounds mega and an old Justin Mendel Johnson favourite a Line 6 Verbvilla which sounds great for my favourite standard solo sound with your Harmony 2 patch without the dual harmony function engaged. There’s something in the Verbvilla I can’t get out of the Dark World, it’s old and ugly but I still can’t get past the functions I use on it. The EQD Avalanche sounds great btw it would certainly be a really useful tool for. Mike Flynn has the LVX and says the sounds and sound quality are phenomenal he said sold his HE Microcosm as it was far superior and can do the same things plus what LVX brings to the table. I’ll defo get one when the time is right, I love my MA CT5 which I feel is better than the Mood Mk1 not tried the 2 let. I’ve borrowed a Subdecay Pixelwave which I’m hoping will do something similar to the FMeron. Have you ditched the Ottobit Jr for the FrantaBit?

With all the pre-amp tone shaping capabilities, why not get a clean, two channel power amp and then you could utilize available speakers / monitors for stage sound to simplify the stereo stage monitoring? That way you know what your audience is getting.

I got a big laugh out of seeing the title. Seriously every time I look at the stereo outputs on my reverb and wonder, "Should I?," I tell myself, "If Janek or Nels Cline don't need stereo, why on earth would I?"

Bass frequencies below 100hz are mono anyhow, and with the low E being 41hz bit daft really. I supose if uour up the dustu end all is cool.

    • @kalidesu
      @kalidesu 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

It's not daft the Bass guitar has a lot of overtones, distortion and string noise being well above 100 hz, the low B on the Bass Guitar isn't just the fundamental note of 31hz.

@@kalidesu not wanting to be a dramarama I do appreciate the overtone thing I have been using a Trace ElliotGP12SMX for years and it allows you to compress low and high freq independently. When I was recording in the early 90's I had a stereo top-end of the bass above 200Hz I do love it but Live it can be a Phaze nightmare!
Look at Yves Carbone from France for low notes his music is ace!
