LOL that's funny! It's actually always the same room, just from different perspectives 😅 Last episode I was on vacation, so it was a totally different house!
I personally didn’t want to comment on Sax NC, but I think it might be worthwhile here adding some info. I appreciate you guys usually try and get through topics quickly. Before the ‘23 edition the last one was in 2017 by SY. 6 years in AoE is a very long time, and basically anyone had the opportunity to do their own. Last year in ‘23 we had around 150 teams compete with some amazing small nations including Mongolia!Gold, Silver, Bronze and Wood league was all guaranteed. We even had two competitions off shoot from Wood league losers. The main event this year featured 8 teams, not 12 as Nelson mentioned, with 50% invited to the main event. No sub divisions at all yet. NC23 had a massive focus on being a community driven event, an event that the community needed imo, that hadn’t been done in a long time and was a massive body of work. The Sax event feels so incredibly different, personally I don’t agree with a lot of the format, but I understand why it’s done of course. Should the event have used the NC moniker? “Nations Cup” sells, it instantly raises the profile of the event, so again it’s understandable why it was used, but imo it does not feel like one to me. I don’t think is an event that should be saturated. There’s a reason we only have the Olympics and soccer World Cup every 4 years. It makes the event special and meaningful. If we have a Nations Cup every year it will lose its charm, but this one doesn’t feel like one to me anyway largely due to the format. I think it would have probably been better if had a different name imo. I get that it’s great that people are throwing money at the game, RedBull and Sax sponsor are two big ones in recent memory, but I also find the whole discourse of “we shouldn’t complain” rather concerning. Throwing money at events does not make them immune to criticism. I usually see this line of thought from top pros/people that have benefitted from them the most, so I get why this line of communication is used. Not Al “complaining” is for the sake of it, but some in pursuit of better standards, so things can improve. Anyway, I have a lot more on my mind about this which I may say one day, but for now…
Hey Masmorra, great content as always! are you interested in making some small talk/interview with "smaller" pro players/content creators, just to give them some exposure, discuss some topics with them, and see if they have some unique points of view that different from majority playerbase or top top players?
Loved it when Boit said theres controversy about why he isnt paticioating and Masmorra was like "keep going 🤤". Would love to know more about it as well tbh 😂
Yea the visibility of LOL is huge compared to most RTS multiplayer games including their direct rivals like INTERNATIONAL - DOTA 2 even which fell off massively in recent times AOM/ AOE 2 have not yet reached their level so I was shocked that Vizicsacsi, one of my favorite LEC top laners was the FAKER equivalent for another game because I felt he was super underrated in LOL comparatively
Really happy to see Boit as a guest. Mythology and AoE2 are my fav rts titles even tho i tried most of them. Love to be part of a "community" where we can enjoy this or that game and still help the genre in general to grow.
Personally like the team game tournaments, even in the escalating formats we have been seeing. I also play mostly team games on AOE so I am a bit bias. 100% agree with Boit AOM has been so much fun!!! Also been really enjoying watching everyone give it a try.
Loved the podcast, also I have been following AOM scenes and I feel BEASTY is an dark horse candidate to win if he manages to qualify for the the main AOM WOLOLU event idk if BOIT agrees to that but yea
I know I’m just one person with an opinion I’m sharing, and no specific questions for spirit…. But I believe the at spirit of the law is the best and most valuable content creator we have. Only one where I want to go back through every. single. video, and watch em all. Please please do what you can to get spirit on the podcast more. I (and presumably others) would be very pleased.
Great podcast as always guys! Some Sotl questions: which of his videos had the most impact in how the community / top players approached the game? Whats his opinion on the Age of Noob controversy? Which is the best civ of all time (based on stats)? :D
13:00 I think the interest for WDC2 having 1v1 and 3v3 in the same tournament is that you get to see how maps play out differently based on the number of players playing. It make it more challenging for the map creators but I had a great time making Anza Borrego and Mojave.
Good point about the balancing - AoM:R is by design a game that can be balanced and re-balanced in a lot of fun ways very easily. I feel like most other RTS games have to change, add or remove something to achieve the same result.
1800 is actually top 900. Pros at the top dont realise how small the playerbase at the higher elos really is. So Masmora's initial guess of 1500 is more closer to truth than Viper's :)
My question for spirit of the law: As someone who spends so much time explaining the mechanics of AoE, what do you think are the most difficult things for new players which the game should do better to explain or assist with? From my perspective as a low elo scrub in AoE2, I feel like the easiest thing to grasp is the early economy, yet it's the focus of assists in AoM and the tutorials in AoE2. Combat is the most difficult and opaque part of the game, as well as the most consequential, yet it feels like the game does little to onboard new players. Thanks!!
The visual changes from armour or weapon upgrades help me as a newb so much. I can be like.... Oh crap that elephant has gold armour! Hahaha. They matter to me a lot, rather than having thousands of hours in aoe 2 like you guys where you just, feel and know from timings and damage percentages what upgrades they probably have.
as far as peak viewership goes for AoM tournaments, I personally only ever watched the youtube uploads, not the live casting, and I think many others are the same
So next episode will start with: -Hey Spirit, Gamers of the Legion here. Anyway a lot of hype here. I'm just curious, will he be playing Civilization 7 when it comes out? I know he's already a fan of the series (or at least he mentioned one of the games in one of his videos).
GL should definitely do a weekly practice session it's kind wild that Viper suggests it wouldn't be useful! All professional sport teams do it and they do it for a reason - saying you don't have time for it when Aoe2 is literally your income and your life is surprising to me but I suppose it's because there isn't much competition. GL are already the best players in the world, there isn't much motivation to push themselves. Maybe if there were 3-4 "GL"s in the Aoe2 scene then there would be more motivation for players to push themselves beyond their current limits. Only Hera seems to be attempting it.
What he referred to where the previous bootcamps where after 5 or 6 days of constant training it just got a bit tiring. It was more about having a few efficient days than dragging it out more than necessary.
Not sure of other video games and how they do a weekly practice sessions. But with players from different time zones/countries/lifestyle/family needs, it’s hard to imagine a practice every week. What are they practicing for? It makes sense to plan ahead for a specific tournament (format or map pool). To build a team chemistry and relationships, these guys have been playing each other for years and they know enough to play together. I work remote at my work and we sync up once a month where we talk about high/lows of life of the last month (we call it roses and thorns), sharing something personal, which builds a sort of bond. Maybe that’s something to explore? @GLAgeOfEmpires
Random question about the podcast overlay: anything significant about the 4 icons on the top left? I zoomed in a bit and one looked like a pyramid, another like a bird or something.
The 4 icons were created for the current AoE look at GL and they each represent one of our players. There's a round shield with viking runes for Viper, a Conquistador Helmet for Tatoh, a meso castle for DauT and a the wing of a hussar for Hera. You find these icons basically everywhere, graphics, jerseys, overlays etc.
I don't think it would be fair that they let Daut train with you in the common training room, cos then they should also let all the players from mynsanity and fox to do the same.
Lovely episode, I skipped the AoM parts since I don’t play that game but good to give it some attention. One minor point of critique is that regarding the settings and such around the tournaments where Nelson sometimes apologizes for missing details, please have a page of liquipedia at the background. Like the number of teams playing the nations cup is all there available. Just having those details ate the ready will improve the overall quality a bit. And a question for Viper about Spirit of the Law: does viper studies his videos about certain topics? Or does he watch them from an entertainment point perspective, if he watches those videos
Whaaat ? The content king Viper doesn't see the value of practice if he can't monetize his sessions ? Jeez, with such a hardworking mentality I wonder why he doesn't win anything anymore .
Ridiculous that a non qualified player gets access to the event. I get he’s their friend but that’s irrelevant. He failed. He should suffer the penalty of failure. No event for you, play better next time. How many other players performed better and are more deserving to “just be there”? This favoritism is ridiculous. Age of empires will never be a real esport until this special treatment for the “in-crowd” is eradicated
There is no favouritism. We bring DauT on the same base as I go there my self, basically as staff member. It´s fully on our side and Red Bull has nothing to do with it. He does not have the same access as qualified players.
Also, show me the AoE player who will stop Daut from visiting an AoE tournament as a spectatator and member of GL. He is not only an og, but a dark horse who still can win an S tier tournament.
