    I'm considering freeze drying some flower to use in resin casting. Thanks for the tips. I don't have an actual freeze dryer, but I do have a vacuum chamber and I think I can make that work.

      I have heard it works fantastic. I have been looking for tiny flowers that I can see through the petals or see the veins. I want to freeze dry them and find someone near me that does the resin earrings that hardly weigh anything. I will only buy earrings that are very light weight, not posts, and are stylish. It's hard to find light weight earrings!

      Is the vacuum chamber to dry flowers? I know my husband had one. How it works for flowers purpose?

    You can try adding a bit of DISHWASHING LIQUID to break the water tension that would make all the CELLS fully hydrated so that when it freezes the flower is fully expanded before the vapor is extricated.

    Leaving the stems on and soaking them will allow the flowers to soak up the most amount of water. A good watering the night before you cut can help tons.

    • @gooseberrybridgefarm
      @gooseberrybridgefarm  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      watering doesn't make the difference that soaking the actual flowers does for me .. I recently tried soaking them in warm water and that worked even better for Zinnias. every single one came out perfectly.

    Great video! how do the flowers stay dry? do they take up humidity and therefore does the humidity alter shape and color?

    • @gooseberrybridgefarm
      @gooseberrybridgefarm  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      they stay dry in normal room level humidity - if they're exposed to very high humidity (outdoors in the dew, or get rained on for example) they will lose their shape and color over time (time depends on how high the humidity is, if they're rained on they are done ) - in normal indoor environments they do not rehydrate, I have successfully kept them in our farm store which does not have climate control

    • @kimbucha1
      @kimbucha1 11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That is exactly what I thought…just like food, they would start rehydrating again….i want to play around with this too. Maybe talk to a local flower shop and pick up their broken stemmed or rejects just to try

    If made into wreaths will they draw moisture and go bad? They are beautiful.

    • @gooseberrybridgefarm
      @gooseberrybridgefarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      My wreaths kept indoors have been fine, and I don't seal up the freeze dried flowers to store them - if the humidity is really high the really delicate flowers like the rudbeckia drooped a little on the wreaths but the zinnias have been fine - I just wouldn't expect them to last more than a season outdoors .. direct sunlight will make them fade, like any other dried flower.. and leaving them out in the rain is really bad lol

    A quick question, how long does the freeze drying take for these flowers?

  • @sharonjennings1282
    @sharonjennings1282 ปีที่แล้ว

    Wondering if they absorb moisture from the air eventually and how they will look?

    • @gooseberrybridgefarm
      @gooseberrybridgefarm  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      they don't absorb moisture from normal indoor/climate controlled space - if they're outside overnight and there is dew/very high humidity they fade a bit and eventually don't look as good.

    2 questions. Have you tried roses? And it make the flowers hard or still softener?

    • @gooseberrybridgefarm
      @gooseberrybridgefarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      We don't grow roses, so we haven't tried freeze drying any. The flowers generally come out soft but crunchy, if that makes sense. They aren't 'hard', but they are dry.

    So pretty! Is there a benefit to freeze drying over dehydrating or air drying?

    • @gooseberrybridgefarm
      @gooseberrybridgefarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Freeze dried flowers keep are much more vibrant in color than any other drying method! Air dried zinnias do not keep their shape either the way they do when they’re freeze dried - though some flowers, like celosia keep their shape air dried, but they keep their fresh color when freeze dried

    How long does it take? The freeze dryer is automatic and knows how long or you have to program the machine?

    How delicate are the smaller flowers? I would imagine they would turn to powder with handling.

    • @gooseberrybridgefarm
      @gooseberrybridgefarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They are rather delicate, but good for use in things like dried flower wreaths, sprays, and wedding bouquets. I wouldn't recommend handling them more than necessary, but they are sturdier than one might think.

    • @gooseberrybridgefarm
      @gooseberrybridgefarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The fluffy zinnias from the videos are Oklahomas - not for sure on the colors cause I planted a mix - I just got into trying to dry the giant zinnias at the very end of the season and haven’t completely perfected that yet - they are harder cause they almost don’t fit in the freeze dryer

      @gooseberrybridgefarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We just started drying them this way 9 months ago, so far as long as they’re kept out of direct sunlight and don’t get wet they seem like they were the say they came out of the freeze dryer - I’d imagine like other dry flowers they will eventually fade

      Wire and a glue gun - depends on the type of flower and how strong the stems are
