    I ended up swapping my injector pump for a known good pump and now the engine runs great. I went on to completely dismantle the original pump, and lapped the mating surfaces with diamond lapping compound. That pump works now too. Thanks for the encouragement.

    The injection timing is set by adding or subtracting the shims under the injection pump. This Kubota has fixed timing like most lawnmower gas engines. A lot of automotive diesel injection pumps have variable injection timing. I installed a Kubota 905 diesel in a Geo Metro and it had driveability issues because of the fixed injection timing.

    • @PetesGarage
      @PetesGarage  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interesting, I can see how that would work.

    • @redfuel6bt
      @redfuel6bt 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was thinking about doing the same, 3cyl kubota in a geo , did you ever get it right? How is the power? Could a turbo be added? Milage? Thanks would appreciate some info, did you build a adapter?

    • @kimmer6
      @kimmer6 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@redfuel6bt Power...terrible. Going from 54 hp to 24 hp makes it a flat land vehicle only. I forgot about the car long ago but still have it. It's not a simple swap at all. Nothing fits. I built the adapter, modified a Suzuki Swift flywheel, clutch, starter, and had to make a vacuum pump to work the brakes. The oil pan hangs low and needs mods to provide clearance. The worst part is that the oil filter is exactly in the way of the right axle. A complex adapter needed to be made to switch it over to the front side of the engine. The fixed timing injection pump makes driveability poor. The governor had to be modified to hit 3600 rpm from fixed 1800. When you were ready to shift and hit 3600, the power cut back completely. But it got around 70mpg during the week I tested it. The registration expired and California would not renew it without the original engine. I have a turbo but it still sits on a shelf. I used to build random things like that but nearing age 70, no longer have the interest. I build solar generators for fun now.

      @@redfuel6bt Since you clearly like Cummins and off road.... here's my boat after converting it from a slow inboard to a stern drive with Chevy 6.5 turbo diesel. I still have the boat in storage and doubt that I'll ever run it again. Boats were fun for years but I'm over it. Note the air horn dongle. It once hung from a friend's Dodge Cummins before he rolled it 3 or 4 times. The old Perkins 47 horsepower diesel that came out of the boat went into her old wooden 28 foot Tollycraft cabin cruiser...very slow, 8mph, but got us around the NorCal Delta at 1.25 gallons per hour. That's cheap boating.

    Nice video. Wish I found this prior to diving into my pump. Similar kubota 3 cylinder in a jacobson turfcat. Hadn't ran in 10+ years, water in the fuel. I pulled the injector pump out. I was difficult to get out because the throttle slider was frozen and it ended up breaking on the gears that rotates the plunger inside. (slightly older design to yours). Called kubota, they tell me that dont sell parts for the pump but they would end up sending it to a diesel shop like D&W. These guys were great. Similar problem with finding parts, I send in some pictures of the pump and have the parts the next day. Got the thing running after a bit of time. Wish there were some videos of pump assembly, trade secrets i believe. Hi from Alden

    I had a power loss problem I found number 3 cylinder (that's the cylinder if your standing in front of the engine looking toward the rear of the engine), was dead, and also had a loud clatter noise in the rear of the engine. I pulled the injector out of number 3 cylinder and done a compression test which resulted in a real low compression reading. Just for the fun of it I took a piece of bailing wire about a foot long and lowered it into the cylinder until it touched the top of the piston then I reached around to the front of the engine and grabbed the pulley and turned the pulley back and forth and found I had to turn the pulley as much as two inches in either direction to get any response out of the piston. Immediately I knew where the clattering was coming from and the cause of the misfire and low compression. So I pulled the oil pan off and found the rod bearing had spun and the rod itself was bent in the number 3 cylinder. So at this time I'm in the middle of rebuilding it. Just wanted to share my story on how I diagnosed my engine problems.

    Just a point of note that the D902 is one out of a series of similar engines, including the one I bought (a D662), D722 and the D902. They seem to also use the same pumps on engines like the Perkins K103-07 3 cylinder diesel (Which I've also bought). Presumably the same issue would apply to those and indeed all similar diesels.

    I was watching your video and thanks for doing it. My G4200 started with a leak on the manifold for the injection pump. I replaced the gasket but still had the same leak plus picked up a leak on one of the injectors. I replaced the two "O" rings on the injector and installed another gasket. I still have the leak, it loks like it might be oil with gas coming out. The motor tries to start a little but never does run plus the leak comes out at the gasket. Is there a chance that I am pressurizing the motor due to an injection pump leak and forcing the oil-gas out?

    I have a similar issue with my mahindra 2015HST. I’ve replaced the injectors without improvements. Next is the solenoid fuel pump, which I’m going today. I will also clean the fuel tank when I do that. If it doesn’t change anything though, I will break into the injection pump and change the head gasket while I’m at it.

    Your video may be the final piece in the puzzle. Again a HUGE THANK YOU, for the info regarding the removal and breakdown of the fuel injection pump.
    I have removed and cleaned the injectors, bleed the fuel system, run some "Dextron ATF" through the system, and still had one cylinder when running the engine would just push BLACK SMOKE out the stack.
    Now I need to find a source for the large spring you show in the video that sits inside the plunger.

      Good chance your fuel jelled, you can go to a auto parts store and buy a can of fluid that immediately breaks this up. Costs about $30 not cheap but better than taking the tank off, also change your fuel filters. Kubota users two of them

  • @MacGyver-1
    @MacGyver-1 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    DO NOT CHECK THE FUEL PUMP FIRST!!!!!!!! This symptom can be caused by something as simple as a plugged fuel pickup, i stopped someone from replacing a fuel pump and replaced filter and lines first, found the down tube in the fuel tank had a peice of plastic bag stuck in the fuel line, suction in the fuel lines was causing air to get into the fuel lines before the injection pump. 10 minutes and $10 in parts (fuel lines and filter) and the machine runs like new.

    • @PetesGarage
      @PetesGarage  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      You are absolutely correct. Before doing this video the fuel filters were change, tank drained, and lines cleaned. I did find a huge ball of plastic blocking the pickup. But I think that is based on what the engine is put it,
