The cool thing is most of the income generated goes to the workers. These young women may have help building and carrying water but this woman has exceptional skills. These general building methods are common throughout SE Asia. The clay and building underground is a bit unique to this location due to the deep and very fine clay- they will use the finest and homogeneous deposits for the watertight basins and pools. My wife is from rural Philippines and can build the Nipa structures with nothing more than a machete. They make do with what they have around them and with imagination unlimited by building codes and what is available at Big Box hardware stores. I've spent a few weeks visiting her family and sleeping in these structures. At first the floors don't feel strong, as if the bamboo strips would fail and I'd fall through, but it's just the inherent flexibility of bamboo. It is VERY strong.
