I am a 56 year old woman unemployed for the first time in my life and I'm expected to do work experience!!!!!!!!!!!! I have worked for 39 years so why the hell do they think I need work experience!!!!!!! It's slave labour that's all it is, for employers to get free labour..Disgusting it is!!!

1Scottishmum I know what you mean. You are treated like a child as though you cannot even remember when you are supposed to come in i.e. use a diary. Give me a break! I was a legal secretary for 12 years full time.

1Scottishmum I am same age as you. Ageism is rife. Young people are cheap labour so why is there not more help for over 50s?

It's worth noteing too..That Iain Duncan Smith, would not visit a dwp office, when it is open to the public. Because he thinks the unemployed are the dregs of British society.
He " Smith & McVey" would not visit food banks...Why? Is it because they think we're rubbish.??
I was told by a dwp staff member this, when Smith visited a dwp office " we couldn't say anything to Smith about any concerns we had, because the manger's of the dwp office were standing there.".
Not very democratic, is it ?

The chap attitude of at the dry cleaner's is telling. A young lad who wants a job and is enthusiastic would stand no chance without experience. However, a woman with 20 years experience in the industry would not be encouraged by the low hours and rate of pay and may be tempted to set up on her own instead.
This dry cleaner will have this vacancy advertised for months on end with no one filling it as a result.

Alot of places recruit only online. But, afew years ago,I was handing out my physical CV to various retail outlets in Stafford, and especially one particular well known high street supermarket. I went on my way, totally deflated after doing this for a few hours. Knowing that it was a total waste of my time,as I was forced into doing it by the jobcentre. 3weeks later,I had a phone call from Asda, offering me an interview. I went, and got a full time job. At the time I handed my CV to the person on the till and asked her to give it to the personnel department,I was told that all applications are done online. But,if your recruiting, and you have a physical CV in front of you,if you like what you read, then they'll get in touch with you. It worked for me.

I have found after a recent run in with the work program provider TCV that the people that work there have no idea what is going on. I guess if you don't go out of your way to find out how they are screwing over everyone then you are going to be ignorant. However I have not met anyone who has anything nice to say about them. We don't know that guy could have been an actor or a plant by the work provider we don't know if he really got a job or if he was even a real client. But I suppose they make the most of the occasional person they do manage to find work. Pick any work program web site and look at the bull shit stories they have on there.

I have this time as I am looking for work but decided to research on some facts about the work force today. Time well spent!, I've learned allot and happy with my progress. Its interesting to see others opinion on the matter and now I have a tighter grip on the reality. Thank you for the upload, I appreciate it, been an experience.

When you go for a short term contract job there's always some mythical employee who's been working solidly for them for years. Most of the time that person has been there well before the short term came in and it doesn't apply to them. No one ever bothers to explain that though.

I am unemployed, I have more qualifications than most of the advisers, I am older than the advisers, I teach computers in the scheme i am on, because the staff there are too busy, and they dont know how to do a lot of the things i know how to do.In the one i go to there are 1000 people on the books, and only 20 computers, you cannot do job search without an appointment. You are expected to do your normal job search.. and if you do get a job they will claim they got it for you..

A dedicated 'Employment Consultant'. That's a lie. How many clients on the WP have had several 'dedicated' advisers?
Drug & Alcohol issues should be dealt with by dedicated professionals at rehab centres. Debt issues can be handled by experienced debt charities or the CAB. Just how can a WP provider or sub-contractor help people with such problems if the advisers have a massive caseload of clients to sort out?

Where have all our jobs gone? and where is the trickle-down effect from QE? Sitting in offshore accounts perhaps or steadily inflating asset prices for bank coffers?
    www.technologyreview.com/featuredstory/515926/how-technology-is-destroying-jobs/
    www.telegraph.co.uk/finance/newsbysector/industry/11219688/Ten-million-jobs-at-risk-from-advancing-technology.html
This idea is based on the fact that money is created as an IOU in the banks ledger, and not as widely believed - savings lent.
Every time there is a loan or a mortgage granted in this debt economy where debt is created as money, there could be a percentage of that loan amount created simultaneously as its component free of debt or non-repayment money that should be spent into the economy for the social good or partly to pay down sovereign debt.
At least if the money is created as sovereign fund at the same time as debt is normally then taxes do not have to rise quite so severely on the ever diminishing workforce or the already rich, plus amounts created could relate to currency changing interactively, thereby addressing currency value fears. Why would that not help? Not sure at what rate it should be created as QE for infrastructure but that it should be I am certain.
Technology is not creating employment at the rate it is devouring available jobs, mostly unskilled jobs but increasingly also skilled automation. Software is set to replace much of a doctor’s job with improved computer & mobile gadgetry set to interact. One medical specialist can perform 600 operations of the same type across several hospitals remotely & simultaneously. 24 sleek black automatic check out machines are installed at my local supermarket, what about yours? Google cars? (no drivers). Warehouses - all automation driven by software created from study of insect movements in colonies.
Unfortunately politicians seem unable to design an appropriate economic structure to reflect these ongoing and imminent changes so instead of embracing these welcome & efficient developments they invent low paid work.

Being honest! The job I have today, (worked there over five years) it wasn't the job I hope for. It was something I found within the company that made for better incentive. This could be the meaning about "hidden vacancies". Sometimes researching the companies that are employing people is a better starting place. What I found hidden within advertised vacancies, a lot of cons and sales/marketing... time wasters!!! I can see the point with CV (but that's a one in a million chance). The more substance vacancies usually have their own application procedure. I found its a mind field how employers advertise, so the old school could be compromised because of the web. I must say that "nothing with any substance came from jobsites"!!!

" Hidden Jobs". I use to walk all round the industry parks and ask for vacancies.
I got told no. Most jobs are temp or to early to get , too with out a car. No buses at 6am.

I have to admit, there really are loads and loads of jobs out there, but the kind of jobs people often look for, often don't exist, or do exist and have a ridiculous amount of applicants (100 applicants to 1 position, for example).
As formerly being on the dole, I must admit that there is a culture in claiming but not actually applying. Applying to 50 jobs in a month and only getting 1 reply isn't just dissapointing, but makes you wonder what the point is in even bothering.
This is added to the fact that it is so easy to lie to your advisor.
