    FWIW, when using screws in softer wood like this, save your sanity and glue a piece of hardwood dowel where you want your screw to go, then drill a pilot hole. The screw will go in easily and won't strip out the screw holes or even pull out down the road. The same tip works well for fixing stripped door hinge holes.

    Premcore 3/4" birch is excellent and consistent cabinet grade wood. It's more expensive than other brands of pre-finish ply or unfinished cabinet grade ply but it's always worth it to me. Doesn't replace baltic for certain things though. Baltic has a much thicker top sheet and for applications like box/dove jointed drawers boxes or certain kinds of furniture baltic is a much better choice and I would dissuade anyone from using Premcore to replace it. Again, excellent cabinet material though.

      I think if you are doing a traditional face frame cabs in a harder material, this would be perfect for cabs. For a modern frameless/full overlay style where this would be exposed, I think it is too soft. Also I would use something harder for the shelves and bottoms as they get a lot of wear.

    I had a super hard time getting this product in Canada because they will only take an order from lumber store chains or box stores that have an account with Richelieu (huge conglomerate) and none of them sell it. I finally got the distributor in the Toronto area to area to sell it to my local lumber yard but I had to drive four hours each way to pick it up. Normally they will not sell less than a "lift" which is 48 sheets. Luckily they had a broken lift and agreed to sell me 15 sheets. It is amazingly light (57 lbs vs 84 Lbs for premium 13 ply baltic birch) and that is what I was looking for. I do like it but be warned that compared to 13 ply premium baltic birch it has a lot more voids.

    The thing that made Baltic Birch so popular was that it actually looked fantastic on the ends. You can laminate multiple sheets together, sand the edges flat, and finish it for some beautiful pieces. So much so that people use it to build intricate projects "sideways" so that there is the plywood edge on the large faces of the project, from tables to speakers boxes, computer cases, etc. I've actually seen edge banding that looks like the ends of Baltic Birch. Great as this may be for rigidity, it looks absolutely awful on the sides, so definitely consider whether you can cover that up before using it.

Definitely better than big box plywood and other Chinese imports which have large voids and some delamination.

    Depending on the project Premcore can be a poor substitute for Baltic Birch. I've used it for several projects and while yes, the veneer surface looks very nice, it is also very, very thin. Thinner even than the birch veneer plywood at Home Depot. It take very little sanding to go through the veneer into the substrate so you have to be careful. The core is also pretty inferior, very low density (not a lot for fasteners to grip into) with huge voids and delaminations. Also, unlike Baltic Birch, the cut edge looks terrible and is fairly fragile. I'd say that yes, Precore will be okay for casework if used carefully but not for anything that needs additional strength like drawers, shelves and shop jigs. And while it's a bit cheaper than Baltic Birch, I wouldn't call is a 'budget' product.

    • @82camino96
      @82camino96 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I was literally thinking the exact same thing as I watched the video. The vaneer looks terribly thin. Which is why I don’t like regular cabinet grade Home Depot plywood. Thin vaneers are not ideal and the main reasons I would use Baltic birch is particularly because the vaneer is thick and the core is heavy and solid. I guess, honestly, I don’t exactly see the point of this plywood.

Not just little patches here and there, a square foot or so across two pieces (from a test order of 6 1x4 foot pieces) as well as several smaller areas, mostly on those two. The surface finish is lovely, but I can't afford that kind of waste - or risk hidden defects of that size.

    for decades in western canada we just dropped or pushed over the large birch trees as the western sawmills only had equipment and markets for softwoods like pine, spruce and fir. by the time anyone reached such beautiful logs of birch they where rotting and just used for fire wood. and when we tree planted in BC, they actually removed birch and aspen new tree growth with even herbicides. it was like someone in Canadas capital 's was micro managing the resources, and wanting mono plantains of pine out west, and hardwood plantains out east. where as sadly hardwoods at certain times of the year can act as fire breaks and reduce the size of forest fires. instead we planted the very flamable trees with high levels of turpentine.

    9/32" Baltic Birch is 'exactly' twice the weight of 'normal' 9/32" (5/8") plywood. Baltic Birch is used where 'no voids' is essential - that is: where the interior is more important than the exterior. The exterior does look nice also. But BB is solid and can be structural and strong with screws. I wonder how this 'new' product can be Birch plywood when it is also soft. Impressive, but negatively so for serious applications.

      In my humble opinion, it's overpriced big box store plywood. On one panel I had a half-dollar-sized void in the first layer under the face veneer. Was a bit frustrating to discover after glue up during final sanding. Aside from the price being more than the home improvement store stuff, the several times I've tried using this it was essentially the same thing.

      @@thorshuatus What is the name of the dealer? Do they have a website? I am still very skeptical of this. I have seen higher quality than normal plywoods that mimic Baltic birch in 4x8 sheets, but I haven't seen any actual Baltic birch that wasn't 5x5. The quality is closer than normal but still not the same. I would be delighted to learn otherwise, but so far everyone just claims they have a source but don't state the source.

    This is kind of the mid-point between legit BB ply and the cheap Big Box sanded pine ply. Which makes it perfect for some things, but not a true replacement for BB in all cases. BB ply will always be stronger due to all those plies of legit hardwood birch.

    Looks to have decent veneer thickness on the face side. I've used some birch ply that the face ply was so thin you couldn't sand it with 240 grit without breaking through the super-thin veneer.

    • @pshep123
      @pshep123 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Looks like the outer veneers are paper thin. At first glance it looks like a 7 layer plywood with thick outer veneers, but upon looking hard at the closeups, it seems that these are 9 layer plywood with outer veneers so thin you can hardly see the edge.

    • @joshua43214
      @joshua43214 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would say no.
      MDF will pretty much always perform better than low ply plywood like this, but on the other hand, it's low density might work well if combined with a heavy dampening material like NoRez or lead sheet.
      On it's own though, this stuff will be mostly transparent to sound and require alot of bracing just to prevent panels from acting like passive radiators.

    • @batvette
      @batvette 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Depends on the frequency. Ive seen a tech sheet on it and specifying mdf as an absolute for cabinets is a mistake. Mid range and mid bass, okay, go with mdf whenever possible. However for low bass its not as critical, witness pro sound industry has always used baltic birch for bass cabinets.
      It really depends on how your application dictates priorities. Home speakers arent subject to moving abuse or moisture, Id use mdf every time. However for a car subwoofer box especially if its gonna get taken out sometimes Id go with plywood, heavily braced, you can brace it with angle iron to take less internal volume. if you think lack of density or resonance will be an issue you can spray the inside with auto undercoating, or apply dynamat and/or roll modeling clay into the corner joints and apply pl or sikaflex to prevent migration. (Modeling clay is amazing stuff for dampening steel in cars its cheap and doesnt take a lot)
      I hate using mdf for automotive applications, the benefits of resonance reduction dont outweigh whats gonna happen to it with moisture or impact.
      If I was building the ultimate home theatre nothing beats a plywood or mdf sandwich with sand in between. Silica sand is preferred. What it does is provide decoupling of any mechanical vibration from the driver to the environment so theres just pure air movement. No rattling or buzzing, which your brain would use to locate the audio source. High end installers see the same results with concrete.

      Probably, bamboo ply needs to be fabricated with more than just three plies and thinner ones, and carefully dried and better glued.
