51:00 around that timestamp the guest talks about something eye opening which is confusing conspiracy with real world effects. I never thought about that angle and it is amazing.
There is a great book called _The Master Switch_ by Tim Wu that tells the history of mass communication. It starts with the telegraph and moves through telephones, radio, television, and the internet. The over arching narrative is that these technologies start off open and diverse then end up closed when corporations consolidate the infrastructure and patents. The internet seems to be following this entirely predictable pattern. It's worth a read for anyone interested in this subject.
Your podcast is a great platform to inform your audience (more) about the influence large corporations have on regulation and law. I find it ironic that the country claiming to be a beacon of freedom and democracy is also one of the worst examples of the democratic system. Having the campaign of a presidential candidate largely depend on corporate funding, IMHO is guaranteed to result in the sponsors wanting something in return once you get in power. The worst of it, is that the only people with the power to change the system, are those who benefit the most from keeping it exactly the way it is. I'd be interested if you can find someone for your podcast with suggestions on how we can fix this?
Amazing Sean. Thank you, so much. Society needs to have this conversation; but we all are stuck in the "money always makes the right decisions" paradigm that is as ridiculous as sky god, though unfortunately as prevalent in our society now as sky god was in the middle ages.
@TH-cam this should be on everybody’s list! Probably the most important episode so far. Thank you Sean Carroll for introducing me to this gentleman. Would you consider interviewing Chris Hedges?
Sean, I love your voice as you're laying down beautiful ideas. But this is the least I've heard from you in any of you're podcasts. Is that because you're super into Cory's ideas or because he's a stronger conversationalist?
Vis-a-vis the scifi book you're hawking. My 3rd party charging cable for my Iphone 6 causes a popup "this device may not be supported" and the Iphone doesn't recharge. I think this problem can be overcome, but what the hay!
This episode ended just as it was getting good. Or maybe just as it was about to get practical. It dropped the hint that different people are wronged by oligarchy in similar ways and might have common cause, but didn't get into how they can or should come together to fight oligarchy, or how to do it in a way that doesn't cause more harm than good.
You are an international treasure! I feel like I've gained 5 iq points since I started listening to your podcast. Hopefully I'll hit triple digits eventually.
The root of my argument is that I think Destruction of Evidence of a Crime, should remain a Crime. From what I understand, in most cases, a Jury gets to Decide whether or not that *Crime was committed. There's no need to go off on a tangent.
It's amazing how this dude can have such a good conception of the big picture in so many cases yet makes it pretty evident that he thinks a political party that has big tech's junk 6 inches down its throat is the way forward. Enlightening nonetheless due to the sheer amount of untaintable, objective information that was presented, but there were some remarks that were really eyebrow raising in that they did not fit in with the rest of what he was saying. I know many people like this in real life. Very smart, scientifically minded people who know a lot but let their very fundamental political biases warp the way they see things and the abstractions they make from the information they know. Cherry on the top when he mentions BLM at the end in a positive light and then later proceeds to insinuate that Tucker Carlson is a Nazi. So warped.
But that’s typical entitled victim mentality. You know you can just block people on Twitter who dm you. If you’re so offended just block them and don’t whine about it for attention.
Hes 100% spot on tho in his analysis of corporate monopolies and the dangers of consolidation. Look past his personal beliefs and see the bigger picture
Excelent podcast. Cory always clear and sharp. I won’t mind hear a second part.

Across the spectrum, Cory Doctorow’s articulation is so crystalline. Clear, sharp, and beautiful.
Mr. Carroll, this is without doubt *your best and most relevant podcast* !!! 😎
Lawrence (Larry?) Lessig
Framework for change: ~35:00 mins
(Pathetic Dot Theory)
Code (architecture): what's technologically possible
Law: what's lawfully permissible
Norms: what's socially acceptable
Markets: what's profitable
Brilliant, clear, profound and true.
Thank you, Sean and Corey.
Worth listening to cat litter ads for.

Thank you Sean!
Most important podcast you've had yet!!!
I like Mr. Doctorow, can't believe I'm just hearing him for the first time.
Wow, very interesting and very smart guest!
Kitty litter? Lol that was random as quark 😜
Thank you very much, Sean.
For some peculiar reason I chose podcast 69 ;) my birthyear in fact, and I studied philosophy.... Good stuff
Great choice Sean!
Amazing. I had to actually google a few words for once.

Cold dose of reality here.

Yeah I find we fondle with issues more than solutions.
I remember when you paid the month fee and everything else was free. Even down loading music. Hated seeing commercials started
In my world line I was here first
I wasn’t

I tried to understand but the cat litter commercial suddenly in there? Not good.
I thought you misspelled doctor Who for a moment
I think I'm going to start a "do all evil" company based on ideas from Cory's comments.
:-)
the pretty kitty litter color detector.
Nice.
nice.
Love that people are starting to question things, and don't take everything at face value, just because an authority said so.
the twitter part is really scary
Allowing for the deletion of digital evidence of a crime, with no legal repercussions, does not seem wise, even with the best of intentions.
The root of my argument is that I think Destruction of Evidence of a Crime, should remain a Crime.

There's no need to go off on a tangent.
*Educating people about Jury Nullification is a worthwhile pursuit.
I feel smarter already, just listening to Sean Carroll's voice :)
just had to click this video, no specific reason 69

This is the first Mindscape I didn't enjoy, I didn't like the guest, but I'll always be here for the host
Nice
Yes!
Sean sells cat litter? Wow
watched
Hmm... I felt some 'suffering' listening to this guy.
But that’s typical entitled victim mentality. You know you can just block people on Twitter who dm you. If you’re so offended just block them and don’t whine about it for attention.
Corey .... such a soy boy
This guy is really biased politically
he's a lot of things I don't particularly like
Hes 100% spot on tho in his analysis of corporate monopolies and the dangers of consolidation. Look past his personal beliefs and see the bigger picture
@@system0fadowner251 I agree I just think he would sell more books if he kept it neutral
