The 3DS3 tube has a radiation output of 0.5 mR/hr. The safety limit for radiation is 0.1 mR/Hr so no wonder for safety reasons it has a lead shield! Mom did say to keep back from the TV at least six feet back in the day. Guess she was right! Funny how back not so long ago they would put a large mat on your chest if you got x rays of your teeth at the dental office but I think that machine put out 2 R/min so use that as a comparison. Wonderful so far resurrection of a now POS RCA TV. Thanks for the donation fellow viewer!
Been watching all the parts of this series over the last few evenings and enjoyed every minute. Great ressurection. Some of your finest work Shango. Smoke, sparks, fire, and dried rat urine and the debate. Perfect.
Hard times to resurrect. Harder times to work once resurrected. I want to send to you, the americans a huge hug. You deserve better politicians. One seems senile and the other don't respect anything. So sad. Same here. That TV is in better shape now than our politicians by at least an order of magnitude.
I think pressure washing was the wrong move. A standard water hose with a sprayer attachment would have been a better way to go maybe. But great video series! Your persistence is a source of inspiration.
I am also really impressed...I dont think I will ever have that much patience with a device. To me it looks like you have a lot of experience. Very educational aswell...only from watching your videos I understand these old TVs a lot better.👍
I worked in TV shops back in the 70s, and sets like this were the meat and potatoes of my livelihood! Thanks for letting me re-live my youth!! And if you're concerned about X-rays coming from the open flyback cage, I wouldn't be. Back in the TV shop I wore some X-ray films I got from my dentist, one in a shirt pocket and the other in pants pocket. (Crotch level, ya'know.) After a week of working in the shop around open set guts, I took the films back to my dentist, but they were completely clear. I officially quit worrying about it back then (1974 if I recall.) Keep the videos coming so I can continue my disturbed way of life!
Using that lead-shielded HV-rectifier tube from General Electric is a good and prudent idea in avoiding excessive exposure to high levels of carcinogenic ionizing X-radiation. In the decade that this color TV set was made, the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare was starting to draw up regulations and guidelines for exposure limits to these potentially dangerous electromagnetic emissions.
Very entertaining .. you are the legacy electronic guy, as with the legacy car guys .. taking the time to take on “too far gone” stuff, to bring ‘em back to life …
I was gonna comment on the last one but it got hidden as private. Anyways, your fluke multimeter, all it needs is the zebra strip that bonds the LCD to the PCB to be cleaned. its a common problem on those flukes, and itll take care of the issue.
that is so funny as i had to fix mine just yesterday. i have not held a zebra strip in over 20 years, and almost forgot all about them. i showed my son, and he was in disbelief that that setup actually worked. yep, 70% isopropyl alcohol, and the white cloth turned brown. after replacement, the lcd is crisp and clear.
Usually they have compressed too much over time where the connections are, you can sometimes get a way with flipping them around so the non compressed part will go on top of the contacts. Failing that replacements are easy to source.
Hi Shango, thanks for taking the time to make such great videos. I dig everyday on your videos after work, scroll back to 10 years videos , even the plumbing ones, re-watch the classic ones. Keep such great channel
Thanks Shango! I'm honestly also surprised that t.v. didn't e.o.l. during that broadcast. Epic restoration though! I never get tired of seeing them come back to life. Watching live historical events through these long dorment resurrected sets is so refreshing for me, it's a profound feeling. It gives me space from any nonsense. Watching that debate was probably more work for you than fixing the set, lol. The final money shot always makes it worth it to me. Thanks for your hard work!
I posted this on the other video... The antenna you found is actually very good for digital TV. A lot of TH-cam videos and online forums recommend building one very similar. I made one, and it works really well, even on VHF channels.
Those ceramic capacitors have lead entrances to inside the ceramic body that will get water inside and yes that was a mistake to pressure wash the old things.
The chroma oscillator is locked to the station burst frequency and phase. The problem is not in the oscillator but in the circuit that locks the oscillator to the burst.
With those long videos I often watch at 1.25 or 1.5 speed. Shango is speaking slow enough that even at higher speed it still feels normal, save for slightly too fast camera movements.

That was a common argument...he debated both wallace and Biden plus he stomped on his hits. A couple good things this week. He got corona (not a good thing) but the fever has already gone away showing that his experimental drugs do work.
It was Trump against Trump. How could you think otherwise? He agreed to the terms of the debate, Wallace teed the questions up and he still couldn't connect..
@@tstahlfsu Not so. Why does Wallace ask Trump to denounce white supremacists? Why not ask Biden to denounce left violence, BLM, Antifa? Why does Biden get away calling Trump a racist? Wallace was short on being fair. Biden is a scumbag. Trump did miss the opportunity to smile and be positive. Connect everything back to Constitutional principals. He could have done that if he had that purpose in mind. I was terribly disappointed that he didn't get it done. Driven it down the fairway.....
The next debate should involve both trump and biden fitted with stun belts for when they speak when they aren't supposed to. Trump will be dead by the end of the debate because he can't shut up! Law and order, my ass! He can't even fallow the rules!
Remember......DO NOT EAT THE VACUUM TUBES. Good advice kids....good advice. Me, I get a little gassy and weak too....at least that's what my wife tells me. Glad I'm not alone. All kidding aside, Shango knocks another one out of the ball park. Great job! Cbs commentators are obviously in bed with left. I guess smelling hair joe is on board with that too.
That soft foam is an ABSOLUTE KILLER if you use it as packaging material. It's basically no better than just throwing your item in a box without packaging material at all. It's almost as if it allows the item to move freely in the box but hits the item extra hard when the moves are too sudden. I had at least two packages from some clowns on eBay who thought it was a good idea and the items arrived completely trashed.
As always your productions are amazing. I can read about the Burst pulse and the 3.58 MC oscillator but seeing it adjusted and compared is much better. I also followed along using the same Sams that you are used. Where do you get your patience? No one shows what doesn't work before finding the solution as you do. Fantastic Video. Thanks. The debate was exactly the way I thought it would go. Chris Wallace was his usual self.
@Shango66: If you are willing sell that CTC12 tuner and remote chassis (or the one off the CTC16) please let me know. BTW: a few years ago I had a 19" color Packard Bell/Teledyne that was a rebadged GE C2 chassis and used the lead shielded HV rect...IIRC the lead was the only shielding for that tube. IIRC GE didn't bother to make a cage for it.
Hi Shango, is it just me or is it super hard to find color vacuum tube based crts from the 1960s era now? I was looking to acquire one and checked on places like fb market place and craigslist but did not see much, and what was for sale were mostly overpriced solid states 70s and 80s tvs. There seem to be more pre 1960 tvs than 1960s ones available! Any advice?
Shango066: did you ever replace the 2 tube sockets. & did you see the coil that looked unsoldered, below the crystal when you were swapping them out on the chroma board?
Is this digital pt. 4.1? Their server must have gone on vacation for a bit on pt. 4. TV Just needs the 1960's plastic grapes on top. That would have been an acceptable picture with the crappy brown 300 ohm antenna hook up there was back then. Maybe even add a ghost image for being too close to Mt Wilson in La Crescenta.
Funny, "insallah" means god willing in Arabic
Said by Biden in the debate
A kool TV my name is greg
Hi Shango, very impressive resurrection! Thanks for taking the time, it's appreciated.
A bit long and messy but still fun.

We dont care how many hours those videos have! We love those videos, this particular serie is awesome,!!! Thank you!!!!! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏

Great ressurection. Some of your finest work Shango.
Smoke, sparks, fire, and dried rat urine and the debate.
Perfect.
The blue and red convergence is so bad but at least you can use red and blue 3D glasses and watch the two geriatrics debate in 3D
The circus from the end was the icing on the cake!

Awesome money shot!!
We had that exact model when I was a kid. Of course, it was brand new then. No telling how much ionizing radiation I've absorbed.
I heard stories about a cat liking to rest on an old cosy warm TV set. It had cancer..
Those ceramic capacitors have lead entrances to inside the ceramic body that will get water inside and yes that was a mistake to pressure wash the old things.
I have fixed the same problem in a Fluke meter by replacing the elastomeric strips, AKA 'zebra strips' between the PCB and LCD.
I'm glad its uploaded again. Didn't get to finish watching yesterday
the version i watched yesterday was so good, i am going to watch it again 😂😂😂
This age and that debate are a disgrace. What a shameful state of this once great nation.

Im still interested in all the components for the remote control system, including the badging.

Because it can cause Death.
Excellent work, Shango!!
The finale was nice. A frail, elderly moderator hosting the Trump / Wallace debate.
"Will you shut up, man!"
The final segment with Donald Trump Vs. Joe Biden in a rant battle was unsettling. I would rather listen to “F*** Donald Trump”.

Hi shango. I was wondering what the purpose of the black metallic paint on the back of crt tubes. Thanks
