    I told you!
This song has a Shakespeare quote and, I believe, the vocal gymnastics are due to a rhythmic device used by Shakespeare called iambic pentameter.
Just some nerdy stuff that shows how magnificent Tuomas is as a composer.
Eugene Shoemaker and David Levy jointly discovered a comet called Shoemaker/Levy that broke apart and ploughed onto Jupiter in 1994. The world watched on as it happened.
He was a geologist and is known as the father of planetary science. A portion of his ashes was sent to the moon in an urn enscribed with the Shakespeare quote used in the song.
This is one of the most beautiful songs Tuomas has written, and I get shivers as soon as I hear the intro. I break into tears as soon as Floor starts the operatic section.
    Just magic.
    🤘😎🤘
PS. Astronomy is my hobby, and I knew of the Shoemakers back in the 80's

This is one of the reasons Tuomas wanted Floor in Nightwish since they toured together in the early 2000's.
Floor came to the resque in 2012 to save the tour, after a severe burnout, and she never left.
When Floor asked Tuomas how the fuck she should sing these lyrics over this melody he just said you'll figure it out.

    • @BrendonChase_2015
      @BrendonChase_2015 ปีที่แล้ว +7

Abt the "you'll figure it out" part. That's what I sort of figured when I heard this bizarre combo of vocal lines & lyrics for the 1st time. Didn't know it was actually true tho. All I've read is that Tuomas wanted to challenge Floor vocally. Is this info from an article or interview? Would be great to see it. Cheers!

      @@BrendonChase_2015 From a Finnish interview from 2020:
Tuomas: "We had interesting discussions last summer in Röskö, where we did the pre-production of the album. I remember when the singers brought up that the fact that the vocal melodies and lyrics of the songs are made by a person who can't really sing at all and that adds a special spice to Nightwish's sound. I often hear in my head exactly how these melodies go, in which voice they are sung and how the lyrics unfold. Then when I present them to the singers, they tell me that you can't sing that way! There are too many syllables, too many "s" letters and so on. Up to a certain limit, I always try to challenge them to at least try.
Floor is capable of everything from ballad pop singing through opera to growl. Marko, on the other hand, is equally capable of minimalistic interpretations through stark heavy vocals to the most aggressive screams. But the fact that such an arsenal is in use does not mean that you should use the whole repertoire over and over in every song. The end of the Shoemaker song, which features Floor's soprano vocals, is at least for me, such an amazing moment on that album that If you overused it, it would eat away its magical power (kinda tricky to translate. basically because they don't use it all the time, it's really special when it comes).
Floor: "Shoemaker's verses seemed impossible at first and it took me a lot of time to get them right, while the chorus is a lot more relaxed."
Tuomas also said in other interview that "vocal acrobatics were insane here and there on the album, but Floor really loved the challenge and did an amazing job."

@@ValtteL This (as usual) is absolutely stellar info, Valtte. Thanks a bunch! You know what's so funny? I was always kinda annoyed by the 'unnatural' and forced flow of the 1st part of Shoemaker. I remember having commented more than once that this might have something to do with Tuomas not being much of a vocalist (a thing he joyfully admitted on many occasions) who probably banked on Floor's near infinite vocal flexibility to get away with it. Now I love Floor's live intro to this song even better, when she sarcastically refers to the first part as a great "sing along" 😂 Cheers man & thnx again!

Great reaction! One of my top 5 Nightwish songs. It is a tribute to Eugene Shoemaker, one of the founders of planetary science. He was a world renowned expert on impact craters on the earth and the moon. After he died in a car crash in Australia, NASA included a portion of his ashes in an urn on the Lunar Prospector mission and placed them in the crater on the moon named for him. So the lyrics aren't about a shoemaker going on a trip but a description of Shoemaker's final resting place on the Moon (eternal Earthrise because you watch the Earth rise on the moon, although the moons rotation is perfectly matched to it's orbit around the earth so there is no Earthrise but I like the poetic license). I also feel like the lyrics are also expressing our human desire to explore the universe, to "want to go with you" into space. So Nightwish is not only honoring Mr. Shoemaker but also encouraging us to do the hard work to explore beyond our planet. I spent 15 years working for NASA in manned space flight and hope this song continues to inspire generations to keep up that work. Love this lyric video for that epic ending of the Earth and the Sun disappearing behind the horizon of the moon.

I was once told that people either love Opera, or they hate it.
But with Shoemaker, and this lyric video, if you don't feel something in your soul approaching awe or shock, you aren't human, and have no soul.
Floor's vocals and Tuomas' composition is that much a masterpiece.
Edit: I don't know who wrote that interpretation of Shoemaker, but the song is about Eugene Shoemaker, an astrophysicist and astronomer who was the father of bodily collisions involving asteroids and meteors. He, along with a colleague Dr. Levy, and his wife, also discovered the comet Shoemaker-Levy-9 in the 1990s, before it crashed into Jupiter.
Because of Addison's Disease, Dr. Shoemaker was unable to travel into space during the Apollo missions in the 1970s, or the later space shuttle missions in the 1980s. In 1997, Dr. Shoemaker was sadly killed in a car accident in Australia. To commemorate his life, after being cremated, his ashes were put into an urn with the passage from Romeo and Juliet seen in this video, and was fired at the south pole of the moon, where a crater named for Dr. Shoemaker does indeed exist. Dr. Shoemaker remains the only person to be buried on an extra-terrestrial body not Earth, as others who have been buried in space are not located on any one body, such as James Doohan, who played the engineer "Scotty" on the original Star Trek series.

I take it you know the story of Eugene Shoemaker, co-discoverer of the Levi-Shoemaker comet and the only man to date whose ashes have been placed on the moon?
    [Edit: you got there...]
You liked this you should also watch Ad Astra at Hellfest - forget a minute of black screen, when Floor steps up to the mic after the bows, I literally had to hold on to my chair arms to avoid falling off my chair. The best live version of Ad Astra.
Note also, one of the regular commenter in the Army took his screen name from Shoemaker - shout out Laudato si ad Astra.
Until this song, Ever Dream was Floor's most difficult song but because it is long sustained high notes.
This one because the intervals are awkward and it doesn't scan easily.
    The second singer is Troy.

    Fun fact:
That insanely operatic ending - Floor made it in her homestudio!! When she and Tuomas first had finished the ending in the Nightwish studio - Floor went home to Sweden, but she didn't have the right gut feeling. So she powered up her homestudio - rehearsed - added the chorus - and then gave full Floor Mode.
Sent it to Tuomas - and that's the ending you hear !!!

  • @schout33
    @schout33 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Tuomas had his doubts if this one could be done live as they struggled during the rehearsals to get everything right. Floor convinced him however that she could do it after tinkering with it in her home studio and adding the choir at the end. And of course she nailed it at the various performances since. Eugene Shoemaker is a very interesting person. Just google him to get all the details. He was involved with the Apollo Project to travel to the moon as a researcher of meteor craters, but was disqualified due to Eddison's desease. He died in a car accident in Australia on his way to investigate a crater there. Part of his ashes were transported to the moon by the Lunar Prospector Mission to a crater with his name to get an eternal Earthrise.

When Floor first tried to sing it, she thought it was impossible and asked Tuomas “When can I breath?” Same with the song “Music”. Looking forward to watching your reaction to the live version in Hellfest. I always get goosebumps in the operatic part. Eugen Shoemaker, a brilliant and dedicated astronomer, made significant contributions to our understanding of the cosmos. With a profound fascination for comets and asteroids, he immersed himself in the study of these celestial bodies, unearthing their secrets and shedding light on their impact on our universe.
Throughout his life, Shoemaker exhibited an unwavering passion for the night sky, embarking on a cosmic journey that took him to the far reaches of space. His relentless curiosity drove him to explore the depths of the heavens, leaving no stone unturned in his quest for knowledge.
"Shoemaker" not only celebrates his scientific accomplishments but also delves into the emotional aspects of his life. It captures the sense of wonder and awe he experienced while gazing at the stars, feeling an intimate connection to the vastness of the cosmos.
By dedicating this heartfelt song to Eugen Shoemaker, Nightwish ensures that his legacy lives on in the hearts of those who listen. The song's melodic storytelling encourages us to continue exploring the wonders of the universe with the same childlike curiosity and boundless empathy that Shoemaker exemplified throughout his extraordinary life.
You will understand and love the epic after watching this video several times. 🏆‼️

Eugene Shoemaker was a geologist, and he trained Apollo astronauts to recognize all kinds of minerals and rocks. He had hoped to travel himself to the moon, but his health did not allow for that to come true. In fact he may have been the first planetary geologist. It was a real homage to this scientist that his remains have been laid at rest in the crater named after him, and this song is a brilliant homage as well.

Very fitting day to react to Schemaker on July 20, 2023.
July 20, 1969 the Lunar Module Eagle landed on the surface of our moon with Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin aboard. Armstrong took his first step 6 hours later. "Houston. The Eagle has landed."
Michael Collins orbited above our moon in the Command Module Columbia.
Buzz Aldrin is still with us and is a randy dude.

I remember when Human Nature album was freshly released, Floor was asked in a interview if NW would do this song live, she replied it wasnt really a live song, but if the fans asked for it, they would get it, and they did so, ever since it have been in every setlist i belive, i think Floor was a bit tricked by doing this endpart live i think, and that was why she replied this way back then..lol.. its a great live song Floor, you know it..

When I heard the album Human II Nature for the first time, I was very surprised and didn't really like it ... however, it has become one of my favorite albums ever.
What makes this album so special is that there were no videos from Nightwish for CD2 - that's why Nightwish fans sat down and produced one themselves, which has since been thankfully taken over by Nightwish.

This is indeed one of the Nightwish songs that require some homework before listening to it, but in the end you found out the meaning, great job!
The finale of this song is majestic: Floor's soprano accompanying an amazing view from the crater named after him (and where his urn with the Romeo and Juliet inscription hit the moon surface):
An earthset followed by a sunset.

  • @monicacarolina6480

When you where so important as scientist, researching craters and meteors on earth and the moon, that NASA sends your ashes with a rocket to your own Shoemaker crater on the moon. On his urn is written the poem of Shakespear. Eugine Shoemaker was a big scienstist, who unfortunatly died in a carcrash.
This whole last album is beautiful and with lots of messages. Live Floor is slaying this song too. The opera part is longer live. People wrote it and it is really true. In an interview with Floor , they asked her HOW she managed to sing this complex text. It was what Tuomas wanted and he said indeed 'ah, you will figure it out'' 😂
Thank you sir, and I hope Hellfest will not be blocked.

So, Eugene Merle Shoemaker (April 28, 1928 - July 18, 1997) was an American geologist. He co-discovered Comet Shoemaker-Levy 9 with his wife Carolyn S. Shoemaker and David H. Levy. This comet hit Jupiter in July 1994: the impact was televised around the world. Shoemaker also studied terrestrial craters, such as Barringer Meteor Crater in Arizona, and along with Edward Chao provided the first conclusive evidence of its origin as an impact crater. He was also the first director of the United States Geological Survey's Astrogeology Research Program.
He was killed in a car accident while visiting an impact crater site in Australia. After his death, some of his ashes were carried to the Moon with the Lunar Prospector mission.
The spoken word in this is done by Tuomas Holopainen's Wife Johanna Kurkela ( a section from Romeo And Juliet is also carved Eugene's urn ).
"Shoemaker" has become a favorite song of NASA's scientific community. Tuomas has a deep inclination towards science and this is reflected in many of his plays. This ensured the entry of Nightwish into the history books of science, several discoveries in the field being named after them. These new discoveries include: Alpenglow Rockshelter: Archaeological site named after Nightwish Song. Tanidromites Nightwishorun: New Crab species. Sciophila Holopaineni: New species of Mosquito found in Finland. Ophiomitrella Floorae: New species of Cretaceous brittle star named after Floor Jansen. Tmesisternus floorjansenae: new species of beetle named after Floor.
AND, This song Live will Blow you away (As it did to me and my son).
Song from Human. :II: Nature and it is a Masterful Album !!!!
AND Yes, harmonies is done by Floor and Troy .
    NWSU/FloorFan 🤘😎🤘.

This is from my favorite Nightwish album to date (Human :||: Nature). (I have only bought albums since Floor joined, to be fair.) This is my second favorite cut and made me weep a little again after seeing it more timmes than I can count. The only live videos I've seen of Nightwish since COVID have not measured up to those before (especially Wacken 2013). The lyric videos help follow the words fully, and also contribute to the story being told, especially on Shoemaker. Further, the new bassist (have not learned their name) doesn't sing, so this is the last album to hear Marko sing and supply bass guitar (and he, arguably, made the last track, Endlessness, the devastation it is). Cheers, ,y'all, for another fine reaction. (I started following you when you started following Nightwish, by the way.)

    • @JargonThD
      @JargonThD ปีที่แล้ว

Oh yeah. When you hear mostly a male voice, it's Troy, singing as the voice of Shoemaker himself ("Here I came to be, your reach into the far...."), then Floor sings as all of thinking, questing mankind ("We want to come with you").

The Lyric videos are really great.
This was written in honor of the scientist Shoemaker.
The quote from Romeo and Juliette is what was written on his Urn that was sent to the moon. He is tucked in there watching the Earthrise everyday instead of sun or moon rises.
Do checkout Shoemakers wiki. He was extremely important and always wanted to go to the moon.
I would watch doubles, doing lyric vids first, then the lives. :)
They did 3-part harmonies on this album with Floor, Marko, and Troy.
Troy takes the lead in one song as well, and Markos lead one is Epic!
Film makers are dropping the ball so hard not using Nightwish music. Only the Cave I think has. So EPIC.

Youre right the song is about a scientist - Eugene Shoemaker - who has a crater on the moon named after him, and is the only person to be buried on a celestial body (the moon) outside of Earth, and his ashes were carried to the moon in a capsule that had the Romeo and Juliet Shakespeare quote inscribed on it. The person reading the quote in the song was Johanna, Tuomas' wife who you heard sing 'A lifetime of adventure' Its Troy who is harmonising with Floor....he has a song on the Human :ii: Nature album called Harvest, which you should definitely check out!!
