He was on pace for 58 points this season and that’s two points lower than Doughty’s best offensive season. It’s going to be very interesting to see if Karlsson can go back to his full potential with an extended break.

Probably a fairer assessment of Jake Allen than you’d get from most Blues fans. I’ve been saying since Binnington made the Cup run that I don’t know that Binnington is more skilled than Allen. But he has the mental component that Allen just doesn’t have. Maybe it’s largely that the Blues kept pushing the #1 label on Allen (while giving 50 more of a, oh, you’re still here?). Regardless, he had about 3 years in a row where he lost all confidence for about a month, arguably helping two coaches lose their jobs. Not having a good backup plan didn’t help.
My only problem with this is Nyquist. I like the guy, like his play for the most part (as a wings fan), but what I noticed after years of watching him; he is a great goal scorer. I'm not arguing that. One of the main gripes I had with him was that he seemed soft on/with the puck. He was constantly pushed off, never forechecked hard from what I saw. Maybe hes changed his game after detroit, but I wouldnt have him that high. First round yes.
I’m fine with you putting Henrique that high because I’m a Spitfires fan and I’m all for giving those Memorial Cup winning teams love Also Matt Martin filling the Windsor native quota
This was a successful first round for Buffalo in my opinion. Sure they could have taken several other defensemen at #12 (Carlson, Karlsson, Josi), but Myers was a Calder winner and a very good defenseman for Buffalo, and Ennis was also one of their better players during his tenure there.
This is a very VERY good list. Proof of it is the fact that I'm an Oilers fan and looking down the list from Jake Gardiner there aren't that many players below him I'd rather take. I'd personally prefer Scandella but I know that's just a personal bias because I'm naturally against anyone who plays for the Leafs. Also think that Tyler Myers should be above Eberle. Great list, though!
its crazy how much things can change in just three years. when this video was made that was pretty much the correct order. now plenty of things have changed.

This has nothing to do with the video, but one day I liked a couple posts on twitter and Zach Boychuk decided to follow me, I got so hyped that an NHL player followed me, but then I realised that this guy follows anyone that has an interest in the sport.
I would still definitely have Karlsson over Carlson (and potentially Josi as well), sure he's struggled over the past 2 seasons, but he's still a 2 time Norris trophy winner, and his point totals are just really impressive (603 points for Karlsson vs. 478 for Carlson).
His last three seasons have seen his game decline. I think injuries have taken their toll, but Josi, Doughty and Carlson would all be ahead of him in my opinion. I took a lot of heat two years ago for saying Karlsson wasn't the best defenseman in the league. I still think he gets overrated. Josi is criminally underrated.
Having a crystal ball and knowing Karlsson's injury issue. And that Pietrangelo and Carlson have Stanley Cup rings. I think Josi should go 4-6 instead of 3
If I redid this draft, I'd take Josi first. Ahead of Stamkos, ahead of Doughty. He's just that good. Completely dominant across the board. And I think EK65 has been better across his career so far than Carlson has. Yes, Carlson is better right now, but no, taking him ahead of Erik is not fair. Josi, EK65, Stamkos, Doughty, Carlson.
So ur telling me MY TEAM (the kings) could have drafted Doughty AND Karlsson in the same draft, on the same team...that just doesn’t seem fair, those guys now compete against each other for the vesina😂
This would be my list plus adding a couple of the honourable mentions just for fun, let me know what you think 😊 1. Stamkos 2. Doughty 3. Josi 4. Carlson 5. Pietrangelo 6. Karlsson 7. Holtby 8. Atkinson 9. Eberle 10. Bailey 11. Henrique 12. Nyquist 13. Stepan 14. Markstrom 15. Schultz 16. Brodie 17. Spurgeon 18. Gardiner 19. Myers 20. Allen 21. Demers 22. Calvert 23. Smith 24. Hamonic 25. Borowiecki 26. Scandella 27. Ennis 28. Bogosian 29. Wilson 30. Martin 31. Del Zotto 32. Boedker 33. Sbisa 34. Colborne 35. Hodgson
Thank you for keeping Stamkos and Doughty where they were. Also, respect for not picking Karlsson at #3, just because he can score a lot of points doesn’t make him the best player.
The Islanders got trashed so hard for this draft, especially by Leaf fans who took future HOF'er Luke Schenn. Four of their picks are on this list thanks to that trade down strategy. And 2009 was arguably an even better draft for them.
Worst draft I can remember for Montreal. Finished 1st in the east in the regular season and felt they could trade away their 1st round pick for Alex Tanguay. Of the only 5 picks they had in the draft, not one played a single game in the NHL.
The way Canadians brush off Karlsson with the he’s a one way player argument is hilarious. No other defence man has been as dominant as EK the past decade. The way he drives play and command games is unique. He’s fallen of yeh but god look at doughty he’s not been close too a Norris season lately either. When you se a single player carrying a team through the playoffs like EK did from his d position it’s obvious he has what no other defenceman on here has had. None of the others have been the best player in the world. Karlsson was that year.
Just a Mountainbiker the term is defenseman for a reason. Ur supposed to be defensively capable and he has never been that. He’s just about as overrated as PK is
I think Erik Karlsson goes number 2 or 3. He carried the Sens in 2017 to the ECF on one foot and was considered the best player in the world at the time.
@@maverik094 You can argue that both ways. Karlsson has more career points and Norris trophies. Also Kings had carter, gaborik, richards, kopitar, williams, quick, brown and the preds blue line was stacked in 2016 so its a blatant lie if you say that Doughty and Josi didn't have more help in their deep runs. What did Ottawa have.. uuh Anderson played well and yeah Mark Stone? Also Karlsson was going to win the conn smythe if Sens win game 7, Josi and Doughty were not even close. Imo prime Karlsson is just better... Nowadays tho I would take both Doughty and Josi before him because the injuries really blew the tires out from below Erik.
Not just because I'm swedish - but there's some serious recency bias going on here... looking back at overall performance, I feel the top three should be 1. Doughty, 2. E. Karlsson, 3. Stamkos

Why Erik Karlsson at 5 and not 2, 3, or 4? You never really touch on it.
Daniel Siekris Probably because of his recent inconsistency if I had to guess.
2008 draft, one of the few years I had no idea who the Leafs should draft.
I find it funny that 3 of those top 5 picks were all together and won a cup on the lightning not too long ago.
Tampa currently has three of the top 5 draft picks from this draft on their roster
I still want the Thrashers jersey in the thumbnail.
😂 You're definitely on something.
Caps got lucky with Holtby and Carlson cant believe they were taken that late
So ur telling me MY TEAM (the kings) could have drafted Doughty AND Karlsson in the same draft, on the same team...that just doesn’t seem fair, those guys now compete against each other for the vesina😂
This would be my list plus adding a couple of the honourable mentions just for fun, let me know what you think 😊 1. Stamkos
2. Doughty
3. Josi
4. Carlson
5. Pietrangelo
6. Karlsson
7. Holtby
8. Atkinson
9. Eberle
10. Bailey
11. Henrique
12. Nyquist
13. Stepan
14. Markstrom
15. Schultz
16. Brodie
17. Spurgeon
18. Gardiner
19. Myers
20. Allen
21. Demers
22. Calvert
23. Smith
24. Hamonic
25. Borowiecki
26. Scandella
27. Ennis
28. Bogosian
29. Wilson
30. Martin
31. Del Zotto
32. Boedker
33. Sbisa
34. Colborne
35. Hodgson
I miss Nyquist he was solid for us
I feel bad for Jake Gardiner
The Islanders trading back twice to get Bailey got them the extra picks to pick up Hamonic
Thank you for keeping Stamkos and Doughty where they were. Also, respect for not picking Karlsson at #3, just because he can score a lot of points doesn’t make him the best player.
Aww, was expecting Shannon to acknowledge how Barry Melrose hated Stamkos.
I would take Eberle 8th
If I did a re draft I take Erik Karlsson 2 after Stamkos
So many first name that starts with J
Zack Smith?
EK before any other dman except MAYBE Doughty. He was so dominant he’s closer to stamkos than the third pick player
He’s just about as overrated as PK is
Habsfan 43 🤦🏻♀️
Great to see #2 all time Jokerit defender make the list! Karlsson is great but I'd still take Lehtonen over him 😉
I think Erik Karlsson goes number 2 or 3. He carried the Sens in 2017 to the ECF on one foot and was considered the best player in the world at the time.
Doughty was better and won 2 cups. Josi was in Cup final in 2016. Both played major role there.
maverik094 winning cups or making it there doesn’t make you better. Healthy Erik karlsson is one of the best hockey players in the world
Even Slava Voynov was better in his NHL years than Karlsson!
Nowadays tho I would take both Doughty and Josi before him because the injuries really blew the tires out from below Erik.
maverik094 I agree, I would probably put Doughty just above Karlsson because of Cups. But Karlsson is much better offensively and carried Ottawa.
Not just because I'm swedish - but there's some serious recency bias going on here... looking back at overall performance, I feel the top three should be 1. Doughty, 2. E. Karlsson, 3. Stamkos
poor cody hogdson vancouver screwed his body over by not treating him properly
You have 4 Islanders draft picks going in the first round.
Imagine the Sabres with Karlsson and Carlson
And maybe Don Waddell trades Josi to Chicago
I’d take karlsson over Josi personally but nothing wrong with Josi
