  • Howdy good people! Welcome to 8th Day Chronicles! Thanks a bundle for stopping by and watching our videos! We sincerely mean that! Come along with us on the farm today as we discuss small-scale hay equipment for small farms. Hay mowers, hay tedders, hay rakes and hay balers...all small-scale and suited perfectly to the small family farm.
All price quotes we provide in this video was current prices on internet websites at various reputable farm implement dealer sites as of February 8, 2024. I am sure with inflation rampant at this time those prices are subject to change at any moment, unfortunately.
All equipment choices we suggest in this video are those of our own personal opinions and should be viewed as such. Buy the same at your own risk!
Thanks for dropping by the farm with us today and we sure appreciate it much! God bless you and your family!

another option for the small scale haying is using a scythe, pitchfork, and hayrakes, an average person that is expierenced mower can mow an acre of grass in about 10 hours

I like your video, however there is some of the information that is hard to agree with. The Bush Hog can be used to mow hay! King Kutter used to make what is called a hayside Brush Cutter with a removable side just for that. You could still do that today by removing the proper side. Next is the drum mower, I have one, its a ccm 165, really like it, but weight wise nothing short of a 50 hp utility tractor is going to run it! You can Power it and turn the blades with a lawn mower ( if it had a PTO) But. I have a 30hp new holland compact tractor with loader and loaded tires, spread wide. The tractor weighs 4000lbs +or- with loader and bucket and it will not even hardly pick the drum mower off the ground much less swing it to the side to use. Again the best value in making your own hay is NOT new equipment, It's finding the right equipment on the used market and knowing what you need to buy! Also if you buy a tractor and hay equipment you mite as well buy you a tool box....because you are going to need it and the tools to go in it....new equipment or not!

      Thanks a bundle for watching!
A "regular" style rotary cutter is going to chop grass into too small pieces. Specialty-type cutters may work fine, Ive found the "normal" bush-hog (rotary cutter) wont. I have used a drum mower very successfully for some time with my 32hp Kubota. My 32hp machine lifts and runs my Farm Maxx drum mower with no issues. You are right, need to be mechanically-minded to be a hay farmer, things break and happen to the best of machines. Good deals out there for used equipment if you're careful and know what to look for and to buy.
Appreciate you watching, thanks a bundle!

The baler went ok some what slot of questions.I'm starting on mower tomorrow is a FDM 165 manual lift.
I'm finding no assembly instructions. I'm not a master mechanic by all means is just myself and the wife.
Not really slot of friends if any. Do I need the the spacers for mower to raise the mower did buy buy the kit u had a video on this which I can't find.
Is there a assembly video for there's 165 thank you sorry for all the questions.

Good luck with the hay equipment! Ask Carver Equipment if they have any assembly instructions for the mower. My 135 hitch assembly was very heavy and took me and another friend to get into position to bolt up.
On the cut lift kit, start out with just 1-2 spacers and try the mower to see how you like the cut. I wouldn’t suggest just putting a bunch of spacers on right from the start. If your hay fields are rough and bumpy, I feel adding too many spacers could possibly make the mower not cut as cleanly.
