Both good, extremely talented bands, but Judas Priest's catalogue of good songs is much larger than Maiden's, and those songs are better songs. Rock Forever probably has one of the best vocals of any song, not just Metal. I also like their ballads better, Before the Dawn and Evening Star for crying out loud. Anthems like United and Take on the World...it goes on and on.
I completely agree. Both bands have had some very legendary albums but if we are going by who has more it's hands down Priest. There are some things Priest has done better and other things Maiden has done better, but I am giving the edge to Priest.
Thank you I think priest are way better songwriters. There are like 55+ songs of theirs I love and can sing to. Maiden has maybe 10 that I really like but I can try again to find more

@dakky Well music is art and art is subjective. I love their 2000's albums. Heavy, proggy, creative and they sound like a more mature band. And they still sound like Iron Maiden.
@Tibor Õsz it's people like you. You'll never read something like that on a mainstream pop song. You are not a metalhead, you aren't worth of the music from either of the bands. I'd give a slight edge to JP mainly because late Iron Maiden is more prog with >7min of not that interesting metal.
@Tibor Õsz You'd want to put a bit less edge on that. By responding in aggressive manner you're just proving my point. Anyways, I don't care what you do. Man, just enjoy what you want. Sure, it's very listenable, but far from Maiden's best writing... Cheers
- Bruce Dickinson vs Rob Halford is not a fair comparison since they have different singing styles: Bruce is all chest, while Rob is all throat. Bruce has more sustain and power in his voice, while Rob sings higher notes. - Nicko McBrain vs Scott Travis is also not fair since they have different drumming styles: Nicko is more "progressive and jazzy", while Scott is more "rhythmic", if that makes any sense. Also one uses the double-bass, while the other does not. - I've seen both bands Live, and it's instantly clear who puts on the better show: Maiden. - Janick Gers helped carry the band at their weakest, he is very active onstage, and contributes songwriting to every album he's been on. Fans should give him the respect he deserves. - Another thing I wished they talked about is band sound: Maiden started playing "Punk" clubs and pubs in London, then became part of the NWOBHM movement, then slowly matured to a Progressive Rock / Heavy Metal sound. Priest on the other hand changed styles more often and sometimes more abruptly: they started as a Glam Rock band, then they adopted the whole biker / leather & metal studs look by late 70's. Then they released a Heavy album (British Steel), followed it by an FM / Classic Rock album (Point of Entry), then went back to Heavy Metal with Screaming For Vengeance. After that they slowly adopted some Glam Metal sounds from the LA Sunset Strip scene in the 80's. Then in 1990 they turned up the dial and released a super Heavy and aggressive album Painkiller with a sound they still uphold to this day. - British Steel: excellent side A, horrible side B. I give it 7/10, and I'm being generous. - When I recommend these bands, I pick Number of the Beast and Screaming For Vengeance as their most iconic. Followed by Powerslave/Seventh son and Defenders/Painkiller.
To all of the people who say Maiden is more melodic, I ask you this; have you even heard Priest's 70's albums? Sad Wings, Sin After Sin, and Stained Class imo are some of the most extraordinary pieces in metal music. There is a combination of georgeous melodies, raw power, and melancholy lyrics that speak to the heart. At the end of the day, if you still like Maiden more, that's fine and you're entitled to your opinion. I just feel like when people say Maiden is more melodic, they don't bring the 70's Priest into consideration.
I always suspect people who say Priest are overrated or 'more classic rock than metal' of not actually listening to their 70s albums and all of their best material. I reckon those people have only taken a cursory listen of their most commercial songs.
Priest could play it melodic, but are heavier than Maiden by far. Maiden never came close to the heaviness like British Steel, Screaming For Vengeance, Defenders Of The Faith, Painkiller and Firepower.
I love both, but I think Priest has the better guitar solos and vocals. Meanwhile Maiden has the better bass and drums. Songwriting wise, Maiden's are a little more formulaic but that's because it works. They mainly have long and epic songs, and energetic short songs. Priest on the other hand had their style really evolve throughout their career and so they have a wide variety of stuff. That's not to say Maiden isn't varied, just that to me they didn't change much in their evolution (which again isn't good or bad). But I feel like it's important to note because that is a double edged sword for both bands. There's people who only like 70s Priest and hate their 80s stuff, people who like both, all sorts of taste combinations. For Maiden, since their style remained relatively the same there's people who love them and people who hate them, and people who think their music gets repetitive. I like Priest just a little bit more because they've a music style for each mood and because of their godly solos. Don't get me wrong, Maiden have amazing solos too but Priest's leads are always so damn good! KK and Glenn really pushed themselves to be better while I feel that Dave and Adrian kind of stayed on their comfort zone. They did obviously get better too but not as good as KK and Glenn in my opinion.
Iron Maiden for Imagery and thematic writing, but Judas Priest takes the cake for many reasons. JP had 6 albums out before IM had 1, so some could say IM was inspired by JP. Sad Wings and Sin after Sin are 2 of the greatest metal albums ever with a ton of variety, I mean "Here come the tears" = greatness. JP to me is more "Metal" because to me one of the pillars of metal is rebellion and JP continued to push the envelope and break the laws (ha ha). IM is very progressive, but so is JP. Everyone shits on Rocka Rolla but is has "Run of the mill" which is fantastic and has a runtime of 8:34. Halford was openly gay while taking shit from the public and still putting out amazing, socially it doesn't get more progressive then that. Also, Don is right when he says "JP does something different every album" which is truly progressive. And fuck ppl, Turbo is great! Halford I believe has better vocal range, which allowed for more variety of metal creations. I will say, Iron Maiden puts on a better live show. The theatrics, the stages, the props, it is a huge production. Also, Bruce is still able to destroy his vocals live while running around at the age of 58, whereas Halford is finally struggling live and engages the crowd to help sing the tough parts. It is not easy, but Priest for me for sure
So love you mentioned "Run Of The Mill." I'm a Priest fan since Screaming, then years later, I fell in love with all the older stuff!!! Rock a Rolla, Stained Class, Sad Wings.. all epic!
I'm very torn on this argument. I gravitated towards Maiden in my early stages as a metal fan but have since grown to love Priest too. Maiden wins in overall discography and consistency. However, there's something to be said for the sheer diversity within the Priest discography. I can't imagine a time where I'm not in the mood to listen to something from the Priest catalog. Maiden on the other hand sticks much closer to their signature formula. There are definitely times where I'm not in the mood to hear anything from Maiden. This is nearly an impossible choice.
Halford vs Dickenson I'm going to say Dickenson. As a front man he is SPRINTING, CLIMBING, HEADBANGING, AND SINGING! He is carrying flags, running into the crowd, climbing on top of the stadium. He runs a figure 8 for 2-4 hours straight while singing and NEVER seems out of breath. Halford meanders around on stage. The difference is Halford walks with a kind of old wise holy figure. Like the Metal God he is he majestically struts in a way that demands respect. But let's be fair, if Maiden is a 10 then Priest is a 9.5
Gungriffen Id say Maiden is the better show, and better value for a ticket. (I just saw em' last weekend, and although I'm not a large Maiden fan, that was THE best damn concert I've been to.)
Halford sings like a real singer so he can't do that fancy shit. His vocals in his songs are extremely hard to hit. He even fails sometimes lol. Bruces vocals aren't anywhere near this difficult. That doesn't change the fact though that Bruce did put on the better shows. Music wise though priest is empirically better lol.
New wave of British Heavy Metal Nah sorry fam, Iron Maiden was the band that got me into rock and I had bought every CD of theirs so yeah I was a fan boy, of IM. Again, they have better stage presence but that's about it, sorry again fam. Priest has made shit that makes the heaviest maiden song into grandma music.
Why does everyone want to decide who's better when I always wanted both group to make an album together, would have been epic... Just sad and pointless...
Both bands are amazing!!! Iron Maiden is my all time favorite band and has been for over thirty years. Iron Maiden in my opinion is a bit better at albums, songs, and live shows than Judas Priest, but Rob Halford is the greatest singer ever. All these years later Rob Halford might be past his prime, but he is still amazing.
I always liked Priest more because they had variation and never really made the same album twice, where's Maidens Painkiller? However I got to say NOTB, POM, Powerslave and SWIT were an incredible run of Steller albums. SSOSS just a little of the mark in my opinion.
Maiden are good. But I find them repetitive. They have a very successful formula as seen by their fame - they have great marketing and a brand. The best thing about Priest is that they have light and shade and are more dynamic. And saying that a metal band has to be pure metal and only metal - what? No wonder some albums I have listened to feel formulaic. I also believe that a big factor in the belief that Maiden are better is because of the age of internet and social media going fans - i.e. too young to have seen Judas Priest at their peak. As Priest have poorer marketing; have been more musically eclectic (therefore lack a distinct brand); and are older, people have to actively seek out their best albums; live recordings; bootlegs etc to really understand. Maiden are more immediate, better marketed and more commercialised. They are a gateway band. That's not to say that they a bad, but they are more simplistic (in spite of the increasing prog direction. The fact remains) and formulaic; Bruce is a strong singer, but again only seems to go in one gear; and they can't do tight, rock solid rock that has a groove to it; nor can they do a raw, vicious and very tightly performed metal as Judas Priest can.
The argument against Janick actually makes me think that the better dual Guitar attack was Dave Murray and Adrian Smith. Because you made the argument that when Kay Kay stepped away and Richie stepped in there was basically no decline in the playing. Whereas when Adrian stepped away there was a notable difference.
Screaming for vengeance is a perfect album. I like every song on it. I've been listening to it since the day it was released and I still love it. The only song I ever skip is you've got another thing coming and that's probably the biggest hit of theor career.
Patrick Funchar Same. My uncle Tim always plays Priest and Maiden in the car when we visit his son who lives an hour away from us. Me got me into metal 4 years ago when I was 11.
I actually started listening to metal because of maiden and I wasn't crazy about priest. Nowadays though lol... Priest is just too good man what can I say.
I think these kind of comparisons are pointless. There's no way to say for sure, it's subjective and this just doesn't do justice to.... IRON MAIDEN FOREVER!!!!!!!!! (also Painkiller is a god damn master piece.)
Maiden ALLLL DAAAYY! But honestly I LOVE them BOTH! Maidens live show seals the deal... However there is those catchy classic rock radio hits and bone crushing deep tracks that inspired thrash, black, and death metal Priest had and that Maiden never wrote. It's tough... I get it!
Took a friend to go see iron maiden for his birthday in 2001. He loved metal, I hated it. I only went because it was his birthday. They were supported by Halford. I enjoyed iron maiden but was blown away by this halford guy. Discovered Judas Priest. Became a metal head. Love both bands for this.
I think Maiden is better than Judas and i love Maiden more than Judas (i love both ofc) but for metal history judas more iconic and important than Maiden. Also i have to add Maiden made a lot of different style of albums, songs
Love both bands. Maiden were the band that got me into metal music (along with Sabbath of course). I love their epic, melodic style with those progressive influences. However, Priest appeal to me a bit more. Raw, faster, furious and undeniably heavier. Rob Halford is the Metal God
I love both bands but I have to go with Maiden. The whole poppy arena rock stuff Priest did between Killing Machine and Ram it Down, really kinda damages their legacy for me. But I find this quite a weird debate, the two bands are about as far from each other as the genre allows, they don't sound anything alike.
4 ปีที่แล้ว +1
If the whole poppy arena rock stuff damaged Priest legacy for you, then Maidens last 3 albums (with few exceptions) would damage their legacy for me. Unbelievably boring and prolonged stuff. Even songs that could be great if shortened are unnecessarily prolonged kinda Red and Black are unbearably boring. Sad to say it. But thats all good for you. Maiden will sell out arenas even with this "metal" songs on their playlist for sure.
Let me settle this: They're both absolutely amazing, maybe the best bands in the metal genre and in the end it comes down to personal taste. I personally prefe Iron Maiden, mostly due to Harris' more aggressive bass playing and I just like Dickonson's vocal work better, but I'll never say that Rob Halford is a worse singer. These two, together with Freddie Mercury, are for me the holy trinity of rock and metal singers. And when it comes to the guitar, Glenn Tipton is absolutely amazing and K. K. Downing is also astonishing but so are Dave Murray and Adrian Smith, Jenick Gers is a bit off an odd-man-out, still a very good guitar playing but he sometimes just doesn't sound like he belongs to Iron Maiden for me.
Phil Larkin consistency? They release an album every time i grow out of them. It takes half a fucking decade to make an album now and it use to be a decent 3. Thats not consistent judas priest for even more time than maiden have made consistent albums every 4 years usually and haven’t disspointed fans.
Ripper owens was a better replacement singer than Blaze, but Blaze wasn't trying to sound like Bruce. Blaze has his own thing, as for Ripper, he modeled his vocals after Halford
I vote Maiden. While Priest had imo better standout singles than Maiden, Maiden's first seven full length albums were brilliant cover-to-cover. On all 7 of them I say the sum of the whole is better put together than any individual parts isolated.
I've seen both bands live and they both give phenomenal performances. Debating them like this is absurd, they don't sound alike at all and in the heavy metal spectrum are fairly different. Both are on top for me
Note - Halford uses his full voice on the recordings - not falsetto like King Diamond. That's what makes Rob so amazing.
Kind Diamond is in his own thing. Should not be compared to these guys. That being said all 3 of them have easily recognizable voices and they all 3 rule!
To the guys who chose Point of Entry over Seventh Son i freakin love you
he has to use falsetto, youre crazy if you think those high notes are his chest voice

Judas priest!
Wait, why is this even an argument? Priest is great, but cmon Iron Maiden. They're the best.
judas Priest - Pain Killer album.✨💫🍻
Do more of these Band vs Band show. This was an awesome podcast.
Iron Maiden + Judas Priest = Iron Priest
Hallowed be thy Name + Painkiller = Hallowed be thy Painkiller
Nicely put
Lets add 50 more combos!!!??
Don't get me wrong priest is an amazing band but maiden got me into metal so I am gonna have to go with maiden.
For me the opposite. Priest got me into metal.
Patrick Funchar Same. My uncle Tim always plays Priest and Maiden in the car when we visit his son who lives an hour away from us. Me got me into metal 4 years ago when I was 11.
Same for me
I actually started listening to metal because of maiden and I wasn't crazy about priest. Nowadays though lol... Priest is just too good man what can I say.
2 different bands in my opinion but Iron Maiden will always be my all time favorite metal band... Up The Irons everyone!!
Judas Priest wrote much better songs IMO.
I disagree
@@adamhendrickson512 Feel free to.... It was just my opinion.
Run to the Hills,
Pashendale..?
Fear Of The Dark...?
Priest is still my preference, but Maiden hit some big social notes.
And it was before Firepower, but now, if they would do it today, it wouldn't be a question
I think these kind of comparisons are pointless. There's no way to say for sure, it's subjective and this just doesn't do justice to....
IRON MAIDEN FOREVER!!!!!!!!!
(also Painkiller is a god damn master piece.)
judas priest!!
It's Priest. They are the second most important band in metal. They created the sound and the look.
But Maiden is awesome, too.
And NOBODY could touch Halford in his prime.
+Mars eclipsed Halford is still awesome
He sounds really good in Firepower
judas Priest all the way!! lml
I d like to like iron maiden but too bad, JUDAS PRIEST
Judas Priest forever! pounding metal drums bass and dual guitars firing on all cylinders.
I love both bands and they both have amazing songs and albums in their catalogs, but Iron Maiden is my all time favorite band ever. Up The Irons!!!!!!
I R O N M A I D E N
Iron Maiden, great band... Judas Priest, better... plus Judas Priest did it first.
AIS Sabbath did it first.
what!? this is Priest vs. Maiden
+Zachary Tomes thats Priest vs Maiden
UP THE IRONSSSSSSS
lost soul FKN RIGHT! 🎸💣☝
I'll go with Maiden, I feel like they have a way more consistent catalogue.
Love both bands though.
I think Maiden is better than Judas and i love Maiden more than Judas (i love both ofc) but for metal history judas more iconic and important than Maiden.
Also i have to add Maiden made a lot of different style of albums, songs
Somewhere in Time is the most consistent album either of them have released
Love em both. If I had to pick a favorite it would be priest but I realize that's totally subjective. Maiden is great as well.
Priest = Metal Gods ...
Mafaka Hnamte *buzzer* wrong
Mafaka Hnamte Sial lutuk...i hming ka en a, Mizo chu lo niin, hahhha...mahse Maiden ka duh zawk. Up The Irons.
Heeyy fellow Indian \m/
I love Iron Maiden
But Judas Priest is WAY better
man you are in every Judas Priest video XD
Spyros As he should with that profile pic, he's a true defender of the faith
I love Judas Priest, but, Iron Maiden is WAAAAY better...
Love both bands. Maiden were the band that got me into metal music (along with Sabbath of course). I love their epic, melodic style with those progressive influences. However, Priest appeal to me a bit more. Raw, faster, furious and undeniably heavier. Rob Halford is the Metal God
That Loudwire Show Make it happen !!!
@ Red and the Black was actually a pretty epic song... As a matter of fact it was my fav song on that album...
Screaming and Defenders poppy arena rock? What the fuck are you on about?
JUDAS PRIEST
Iron Maiden takes the cake for me. Love Priest but Maiden is damn near untouchable IMO, King Diamond being the band that comes in close second.
Low testosterone answer
@@Caroline_Alys let’s hear a high testosterone answer then?
Judas Priest > All the rest of the metal bands not just Iron Maiden
somewhere in time is my favorite maiden album.......
Seriously got the chills at the thought of "drop the needle 'Woe to you, O earth...'" they would be sooo badass, although I do love invaders
judas Priest forever.
consistency goes to maiden, and consistency is key. Maiden
Phil Larkin consistency? They release an album every time i grow out of them. It takes half a fucking decade to make an album now and it use to be a decent 3. Thats not consistent judas priest for even more time than maiden have made consistent albums every 4 years usually and haven’t disspointed fans.
Janick is awesome! I love him!!
Maiden for me
JUDASPRIEST THE DEFINATION OF METAL!!! PRIEST (METAL FOREVER)
Maiden up the IRONS!!
Judas Priest!!! \m/
Maiden, obviously
Ripper owens was a better replacement singer than Blaze, but Blaze wasn't trying to sound like Bruce. Blaze has his own thing, as for Ripper, he modeled his vocals after Halford
I vote Maiden. While Priest had imo better standout singles than Maiden, Maiden's first seven full length albums were brilliant cover-to-cover. On all 7 of them I say the sum of the whole is better put together than any individual parts isolated.
Iron Maiden all the way
Wow why would even debate this I avoid this everytime its ever come up.But when it comes to it its gonna be IRON MAIDEN.Im so sorry Priest
For many people, it comes down to who you got into first.
Iron Maiden
If it comes to guitar Priest is way better
Iron MAIDEN >> judas priest saxon angelwitch diamond head mercyful fate helloween queensryche any band.
Me going into this podcast: MAIDEN!!!!!
Me after the podcast: I HAVE NO IDEA!!
this really isn't a hard question for me, easily iron maiden
I've seen both bands live and they both give phenomenal performances. Debating them like this is absurd, they don't sound alike at all and in the heavy metal spectrum are fairly different. Both are on top for me
maiden for life
love seventh son but would never say it's the greatest thing ever made
Easily Iron maiden
