Silver is an asset that can be converted into money. Same as real estate or any other hard asset.

@@gentelmenschannel5028 Silver used to be money until 1873. The Coinage Act of 1873 eliminated the silver/gold ratio of 16 to 1. We were then on a gold standard. Gold was money until 1971 when Nixon took us off the Bretton Woods gold system. Neither are money now but hopefully gold will become money soon.
The definition of money is:
1. IT CAN BE USED FOR TRANSACTIONS FOR GOODS AND SERVICES: Today, you cannot use silver coins for transactions unless you are willing to get just the mint value (value stamped on the coin) of the coin. You will not receive the market value of the silver in the coin. I dare you to use a 1964 silver quarter in a bubble gum machine. You will get just a quarter’s worth of bubble gum. You must sell it first for dollars at a coin store and then use the dollars for your transactions.
2. IT CAN BE USED TO MEASURE THE WORTH OF GOODS AND SERVICES. You can’t do that because the price of silver changes every day; sometimes dramatically.
3. IT IS A STORE OF VALUE. In the long run, it will be a good store of value but so are real estate and fine art. All hard assets tend to be good stores of value.
So, silver fails as money. Great asset though. It will skyrocket in price as an industrial metal in a few years.
