Bad Beekeeper + Loads of Honey

  • I've been a busy bee these past few weeks and haven't been out to visit my colonies. This is my first inspection of Primrose and Bluebell in a few weeks and a chance to bring the honeybees more frames to build on. It's also an opportunity see if there's any honey to extract.

    Thanks for sharing your experience in beekeeping I find it interesting.
    Regarding having honey packed by the bees in an old brood comb. In my opinion, it should be the natural cycle of a brood frame which is; In, Up and thenOut.
    Remember that the standard principle is; Establisha 10 frame colony then as soon as all frames are drawn out and capped with brood its time to add a next super to allow the queen more are room for laying. Hence, you will apply the checker board method of moving sealed brood up and inserting empty frames between brood frames in the brood chamber. As soon as the adults emerges from the capped brood in the upper super they will be backfilled with honey which will be removed for extraction. At that point, you can assess and determine what can be returned to the brood chamber or rendered, base on their their condition.

    Two deep hive bodies, medium supers on top, check hives every two weeks, makes for less mess, and less agitated bee's! We don't even use Queen excluders.

  • @paulsiwy6097
    @paulsiwy6097 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    You might want to put 2 or three frames of drawn comb from the extracted frames into the new honey supers to draw the bees up past the excluder. I don't use excluders anymore since they slow the bees passage into the supers and sometimes causes them to avoid going up, especially into undrawn frames. The next thing that happens is you watch half your bees take off as a swarm. I make sure to have at least one to two boxes of supers that have no honey yet to ensure the bees have lots of space. Crowding equals swarming.

    Hello! My name is Vitaly, I'm a beekeeper from Ukraine! I liked your video about the beekeeper! In our country very rarely you will meet girls who are engaged in beekeeping, it causes huge respect to you! What kind of bees do you have?

  • @Jangle2007
    @Jangle2007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    That cinches it. Bee keeping is a hobby I need to get serious about. Need more pollinators around my berry bushes, never mind that I love honey comb and seem to be addicted to it.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      My honeybees are very close to our allotment garden and I see them foraging and pollinating all year long. If you grow edibles they're such useful (and interesting!) creatures to have around.

    • @Jangle2007
      @Jangle2007 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi, Lovely Greens: Allotment garden is an interesting term to me. Here in Vermont (New England!) we have "community gardens".
      In my own yard space at home, I created a couple small home-made hives for solitary "orchard bees" (bumble bees, it seems). Given the precarious state of pollinators in the US (no-thank you, Monsanto), it is a pleasure to see the bees working my blue berries and raspberries.
      All the best -

    Great video!
    A few questions:
    Is there any news about varroa and illegal imported hives on Isle of Man?
    The bees are mostly A. m. mellifera, how to they behave?
    And from which flowers is this honey?

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's been no more word and no reported cases of Varroa thank goodness! As far as their behaviour, the bees here are fairly gentle. They're a smaller black British honeybee that have in the past been bred with other types -- one of my colonies (Primrose) is far more yellow than the other (Bluebell). That's the Italian in them. They're also slightly more edgy but still I'm told they're very gentle in comparision to other honeybees.

  • @T289c
    @T289c 7 ปีที่แล้ว +15

    Forcing those bees down into an already crowded brood chamber will make them swarm. That hive was honeybound and the queen has no where to lay. You didn't inspect the brood chamber to see if you needed to open up the brood nest?? Downward pressure causes swarming especially that early in the season, the bees work UP during summer. I hope that queen has space!

      Ah those folks are lucky! Not sure I could afford to buy some. But I do bet it is so very tasty! I love honey. We get a bit of honey from my husband's uncle. He has honey bees brought to the farm to work the alfalfa field. Then the guy who owns the bees brings Roy some honey that is so tasty. My husband & I use some to make bbq sauce, some for tea, not sure what to do with some. LoL

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Honey BBQ sauce -- absolutely YUM! Local, raw honey is best so your uncle's supply is the best option for you :) Saying that, honey tastes different around the world so when you're next on a trip, make sure to have a taste of their local variety.

    • @SansaStarkofWinterfell
      @SansaStarkofWinterfell 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh I do try to get different honey from different places sweetie. We took the Captain Morgan BBQ sauce recipe online and have worked for the last 7 yrs or so changing up the recipe. We added Jack Danial's Honey for the alcohol instead of Captain Morgan. Plus I put molasses & honey in a bit more portions than the recipe calls for when the sauce is going to be used for chicken & pork. (makes the sauce much better for those meats) We can it up so that it'll last all year long. I put more tomato sauce so I can simmer it down too. I hate having much less than the recipe calls for. Heh Gotta have the sauce! We bbq all year round, even in winter here just sweep the snow off the deck! LOL

    Your frames are lacking spaceholders, thats why the bees build so much burrcomb on the sides of the frame. In Germany, where I am from, it`s either the so called "Hoffmann" spaceholders or little pins to keep the frames apart. It`s all about the "beespace", which is about 8mm. If the space is greater than 8mm the bees will draw it out with wax, if it`s smaller, they`ll use propolis to fill out the gap. NEVER leave empty space in a box! ALWAYS put all frames in the box! or you will have a shitty time removing the honeyfilled burrcomb from the hive. Greetings from Germany

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      In National hives the Brood frames have spacers built into them. In Supers, the frames sit into metal spacers built into the sides of the Super boxes.

    This is why 8-frame equipment is usually better. It's much lighter and easier to work if you are of slight build, like ladies tend to be, or if you are over 30 and a man and value your back :) There are other advantages to 8-frame equipment as well. You should give it a try!

      ahh yes, I heard you say "10-frame" and you had an American accent, so figured you were using Langstroth 10-frame hives. If you are using BNH's carry on, though there will come a day when you switch back to 8-frame equipment :P Those 10-frames get heavy when were in our late 40's! :)

    I don't know why most beekeepers are not using skeps rather than hives.

    • @Lovelygreens
      @Lovelygreens  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Because to harvest honey from a skep, you have to kill or displace all the bees.

    • @berthayellowfinch5471
      @berthayellowfinch5471 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, you do not have to kill the bees and yes it requires work to properly maintain skeps and beekeeping. The same is true of hives except that hives have their own unique problems. Hives do not produce more honey and there are a LOT of bee failures with hives.

    • @berthayellowfinch5471
      @berthayellowfinch5471 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lovely Greens, I found something on the internet and there's even a youtube. Did you know the ancients "called" the queen bees out of the hives to split and develop new hives? I couldn't believe it! I know bees "toot" but had no idea about calling the queen bees. Bees are so interesting!
