    In Colorado you can lease the 15# tank at a grow shop that sells growing equipment for vegetables, flowers, pot etc about $100. it has the handle on it. Best thing about doing it this way, when you empty the tank, just take it back and they will exchange it for a full one for about $10. No worrying about the 5 year recertification. Same as welding gas leases. BTW: Grow shops are open 7 days a week unlike welding gas outlets, also have many more locations. Michael in Colorado.

    I bought my first Powertank in 1999 and have used it without a problem since then. I now have 4 (long story) that I use for various tasks from airing up tires, running air lockers and other things. I did have a tire inflator spring a leak and Powertank repaired it at their cost and paid for the shipping back to me. I have no experience with the others.

    I picked up a PowerTank from them at Easter Jeep Safari 2 years ago and did a review on it. I will agree with you that i think it is the best product as far as quality goes. It is more expensive but in the end, i didn't want to do be dealing with recert or parts failing. I really like my PowerTank.

    That cover on the bottom of the power tank also keeps tank from rolling away. Thats why it has the hex shape around it.I've got them on my scuba tanks.. I've got a couple of scuba tanks that are from the 60's. They passed certification no problem. I bet power tank never has to pay out on one of those claims. Mine are for my air rifles mostly. When they go below 3000 PSI, I use them for airbrush and whatever else. But then those yeng shuei(?) High pressure compressors flooded the market. I think they're down to low $200 price range. Now I just use that and a couple of out of date carbon fiber scotty scba fire fighter tanks that hold 4,500 psi. I got 2-30 min tanks for $50 on Ebay. So for under $300 you could get set up with HPA. You could pipe in all the pertinent equipment (regulator, separator, drier , etc.) on your fire wall or something

    I have the Smittybilt tank. I agree with your assessment in that it can be a little fussy, freeze up, warranty isnt that great, customer service not that great and had to replace tank valve. But, since I dont use it that often its OK. Kinda like buying Harbor Freight tools vs Snap On or Matco.

    I purchased a c02 tank from a convenience store that was going out of business for $10. They were used for their soda machines. I adapted the connection on the tank and now use it for my welder. I’m sure with another adapter or two I could get this tank to fill tires as well. The welding store I use, trades out your empty tanks for full certified tanks. Seems like another cheap alternative to build a kit.

    Love the channel. I have had the 150PSI fixed regulator and a 20# CO2 tank from airgas, I just swap it out for 20 bucks when it's done. Used that for years, no issues (just to air up). Fabbed up a cage for it at one point but now it just goes in the drawer in the back

    I started with a budget CO2 system, then to a P/Tank system. I now have 3 P/Tanks and their regulators. Just airing 1-2 tires (my last truck was 2wd, only lowering the rear tires) with a standard regulator was OK, but it would start to freeze up while filling the 2nd tire. My new truck (2018 Raptor) being 4wd needs to air up all 4 tires and the P/Tank gets cold but doesn't freeze up. The quick coupler on the P/Tank regulators fits several popular hose ends.

    I got mine for about $70. Swapped an old o/a bottle setup that I didn't need any more for a 20# CO2 at airgas and got a Western 320150 fixed regulator. Gonna get a 5# bottle & hose and fill it using the 20 since I got electric tools now and don't need to run impacts any more. Don't have to worry about cert when you just swap at the welding supply.

    I manage a cylinder requalification company. We find that most aluminum and steel C02 tanks fail examination due to corrosion & pitting of the internal walls of the tank. This is caused when all the water used in testing is not completely removed from the cylinder or using a lower grade C02. The aluminum tanks will deteriorate rapidly in this condition. We just failed several 5 year old cylinders due to this. I would use caution in filling aluminum alloy wheels with C02 due to the same type of corrosion. A better alternative is a SCUBA or SCBA (fireman air pack). Its just breathing air but at 4500 psi rather than 900-1200 psi using C02.

    I love my DIY setup! It is extra gratifying to park next off to the side of the trail entrance next to the guy with onboard air with manafolds on all for tires and be aired up and rolling in the fraction of the time! I have molle panels in the rear windows of my XJ and have that little 5lb tank strapped up back there with quickfist clamps and it fits perfectly. I do the tank swap from keen and have no issues, every place exchanges but not all fill. I did grab the adjustable regulator you showed on the amazon list, but from eBay as it was cheaper. I used to run mine without the powertank style handle and smashed the regulator on a tile floor in my house. One thing I did do on my setup was to use HF fittings on the regulator, hoses, and inflater.

    Seems like using a standard tank that the gas supplier can exchange would save a lot of trouble. From running a fab shop (and having welders that use pure liquid CO2 tanks) I was very aware of the cost per pound of exchanging tanks. Contents are always higher priced (per pound) the smaller the tank size. Always fed my welders from 50 lb. aluminum tanks. They were about $30-32 to exchange (60 cents per pound). A 20 lb. tank might be $35-40 to exchange ($1.75-2.00 per pound). When you are talking industrial CO2 bottles you want to be certain the supplier gives you one made for delivering VAPOR while upright orientation. Some fire extinguishing equipment (restaurant grease hoods) uses CO2 tanks that deliver LIQUID while upright.
    (an internal dip tube delivers liquid contents from the tank bottom). You do not want to mix them up.

    I have the Poly fixed regulator. You can buy just the regulator ~$100. You can pick up filled used CO2 bottle at any gas supply store. Just ask for an aluminum bottle. Mine works great, but will freeze up on heavy use. 1 word of warning, turn off the main valve EVERYTIME you are done using it. CO2 likes to leak down on hose fittings and will drain your bottle overnight. I was thinking to use a small inline air tank for expansion that would help on the the freezing issue. Pretty sure all tanks have freezing regulator issues. Its just the physics of expanding gasses.

      With the 40"s on my jeep I've never had the powertank valve freeze up. The smittybilt built would slow down without fail by the 4th tire. I'm not sure about how this is achieved but the powertank regulator is definitely superior to the smittybilt. Its gets frosty but it keeps on moving co2 👍

    I obtained refurbished used CO2 tanks (Soda/Beer/Fire extinguisher) from my local CO2 Refil station for ultra cheap, $20 for a 5lb tank, $30 for a 10lb tank and $50 fr a 20lb tank! All good for another 10 years. I have 4 tanks from Powertank, 5lb, two 15lbs, and a 20lb. I bought another refurb 5lb, and two refurb 20lb tanks. I use the 20lb tanks to refill my 5lb tanks. And my 24oz “paint ball” tanks. That I use for firearms training.

      Do you know much about filling a 10lb tank from a 50lb tank? And even when you fill your 5lb tanks with your 20lb tank do you turn it upside-down or do you have a hose inside to only get the liquid? And is it a 1:1 fill? Like a 20lb tank will fill a 5lb tank 4 times? Or is it more?

Nobody where I live fills tanks, just exchange. I would really like to have a one of the tubes that Power Tank uses so that you can use your tank in the horizontal position... It's a pain in the ass unstrapping a 20lb tank and dragging out of the back of my Jeep every time I wanna use it !!!

    Swap out tanks at a place like Airgas, no need to worry about recertifying. I got my regulator, similar to the power tank one on amazon, 70 bucks. The tanks from Airgas are beat up, so I stole a pair of the wife’s yoga pants and made a sleeve for the tank.

      Most CO2 cylinders and industrial gas cylinders including welding gases are "filled" by swapout unless it's a special case. Cylinders don't need to be pretty, just pass visual inspection. Criteria are online or ask at the local welding supplier.

      I bought a pretty tank way back in the day from viair, like 20 years ago. I still use a CO2 tank for somethings..., I have three different sizes now, I tried to keep that pretty tank as long as I could but finding a place that will fill it getting harder every day. Most of all the welding supply places where I live only do swap outs because they go through a major gas distribution company. IMO, get a standard tank, buy whatever Fancy or cheap fittings you want for it and send it. Your tank will be updated every time you swap out... no need for certification. Also, I use the power tank hose and reg on my generic tank...the only problem I have had is the power tank gauge broke, but I also had ARB gauge break as well. I now buy my gauges from Grainger

    Multiple cheap tanks give you much more CO2 than one pretty decorated cylinder. Hydro dates don't worry me as I just swap them out when the hydro date gets close by exchanging at my local welding supply (not an option with pretty decorate boutique cylinders). Lease costs add up over time while owning a few used CO2 cylinders is cheap and eliminates running out. Decorated cylinders are just a way to spend more money on a system industry solved before anyone reading this was born. Handles and tank base condoms are available online from a variety of vendors. For QDs I use brass Milton high flow pneumatic fittings. Regulator gauges BTW are just simple cheap Bourdon tube gauges easily replaced with matching gauges which can be sourced anywhere. Unless you damage a cylinder it will pass certification. Owning a variety of regulators is cheap BTW so having more than one as backup is handy. Multiple cylinders ensure I have ample CO2 for MIG welding, seating tires etc.

    After more than 10 years of using my Co2 system I regret not going with an electric or mechanical system with a higher initial cost. I did the math and I could have bought a high end electric pump after two or three years of paying for Co2 fills. Co2 airs up tires faster but I usually have plenty of stuff to do at the end of a day on the trail. I wouldn't depend on Co2 to run air lockers, Murphy would make sure I ran empty at the worst possible moment. On the plus side Co2 is great for running air tools, unlike electric or mechanical systems it is "on demand" no need to run the vehicle while using the tools.
    On re-certifying tanks, I use exchange tanks. No waiting for them to be filled. They look like crap so I rattle can them to match my rig, my truck has a rattle can paint job so you can tell I'm not big on looks.

At 120 degrees tank pressure skyrockets to 3000psi!!! The same pressure the safety releases/blows out.

      Not fast enough. It requires power. They are expensive. They don't last very long. They overheat with big tires. They produce condensation. Lots of pros and cons with this stuff and nothing is black and white unfortunately.

    Can some one tell me why to have a co2 tank and not just a 12v air compressor. I have a Viair 444c and totally happy with it. I can actuate my differential locks with it and fill the tyres if needed. (actually newer even heard about co2 tanks earlier)

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Both 12 volt and c02 are great options depending on what your doing. The co2 is awesome for its reliability and extremely fast air up times. With 40's the co2 tank is a must. The power tank airs up my jeep at about 1 minute per tire. The fastest 12v pump I've used was around 4 minutes a tire and they tend to overheat by the time you air up all four. But 12v compressors never run out of air. With my overlander I plan on running a 12volt setup because it's only on 32s and a 12v pump takes up very little space. Every job deserves the right tool 👍

    You can fill tires faster at 250psi than 150psi? I didn't think Pounds Per Square Inch had anything to do with that. I thought it was all about the CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) when talking about filling a volume of space (aka: Tire)?

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The higher the pressure the faster you fill to an extent. If you fill at 150 vs 250 you see a big difference. Maybe I should do a video

    • @BradIXXI
      @BradIXXI 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      A video might show you that CFM is exactly what it means, Cubic Feet per Minute. Regardless of pressure 45CFM at 250psi will absolutely not fill the same volume of space faster than 45CFM at 150psi, unless physics work different where you are. CFM means a fixed volume (45 cubic feet) in a designated period of time (1 minute or 60 seconds). Does not matter if your pressure is 5psi or 500psi the CFM rating of the regulator determines how much volume comes out over a given period of time. Hit me up when you pst the video.

      You are simplifying something to try and win an argument that didn't exist until you manifested it.
      Fill a tire with 1 psi. Then fill a tire with 100 psi. Your very weak argument states this is all about CFM and both tires fill at the same speed. Psi and cfm have a complicated relationship. I was a journeyman plumber for 15 years and we train apprentices to understand this relationship. You are using half the equation on purpose and it's pretty dishonest. what about using a scuba tank? how does it compare to co2?

  • @EthosAtheos
    @EthosAtheos 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm curious if any one using CO2 has had issues with it rotting the rubber inside a tire. CO2 + H2O = H2CO3 or Carbonic acid, Not a very strong acid I gran you that. The CO2 is dri but it mixes with any humidity already in the tire. If you are going to buy a tank and regulator ect. wouldn't it be just as easy to get a nitrogen tank instead? Or am I missing something?

  • @brentheltsley7187
    @brentheltsley7187 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hey Nate, I’ve only borrowed Nitrogen tanks from friends before. Was thinking of putting something together for myself. Why CO2 over nitrogen? What I used had like 2,000psi in it. Just curious.

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nitrogen works as well but co2 is cheaper 👍

    • @morbo5061
      @morbo5061 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Co2 over nitrogen because far more gas volume using co2. That's because the co2 is a liquid under tank pressure with a gas space. As that gas is drawn off more co2 liquid turns into gas. That's why co2 tank stays full pressure until nearly empty when all liquid has turned into gas. Nitrogen is just a high pressure gas only and tank pressure drops as its used. Take two 10lb bottles of each and the co2 will fill several times as many tires.

    I'm curious why use a C02 tank instead of a compressor?

    • @Deadfeat
      @Deadfeat 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      CO2 will run air tools. A compressor relies on a running engine, or electricity. A 12v electric is a joke for anything but adding air or running lockers. Adding a re purposed AC compressor works great, but is much pore complicated and does require your engine to be running. Sometimes that's not feasible. Also having over 100 psi helps for resetting broken beads. Then again , so does starting fluid!

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I think I'll do a seperate video on this. Both systems have their pros and cons. The co2 is nice because it uses no electricity and is capable of FAR more pressure! This is valuable for folks like me with 40" tires! Filling a 40 takes forever but when you can crank your pressure up to 250psi it takes less than a minute. Also, the air is super dry and has zero oil. 12v and belt driven a/c compressors produce moisture as they compress air. This gets into whatever your filling or the tool your using. The converted ac systems get oil throughout the on board air system as well. Somthing that needs to be filtered out before you fill a tire. Oil based products eat each other so this is dangerous to have oil in your tire. When your filling 40s its taxing on a 12v compressors as well and many overheat on the 4th tire. Pros and cons to all systems, I choose the co2 tank for many builds but would be happy with a 12v system for an overlander or something a with a smaller tire. All the problems I listed with 12volt and belt driven pumps can be over come! But the big one that can't is speed unfortunately. Thanks for watching 👍

    Why would higher pressure fill a tire to 30psi “faster”? Fill is about volume isn’t it?

    • @DirtLifestyle
      @DirtLifestyle  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      The pressure on the gauge represents the resistance going through the air line. This resistance represents the tank pushing more volume. It's the same principles in plumbing. If your water pressure is 30PSI and you try to fill your tub it will take a while. If your water pressure is 80PSI and you go to fill your tub it will fill in less than half the time. More static pressure = more static resistance = more static volume. Static in this case meaning the measurement while filling the tire. At 250 psi it fills my 40 inch tire in under a minute which is crazy.
