Volume 1 obviously suffers from its problems with lack of budget, but I have always immensely respected how much they did with what they had. Between good messages and character moments and using the lack of animation budget to comedic effect, there's a lot of fun stuff.
ive always said whats great about rwby is that because it was never afraid to be imperfect, its also not afraid to grow and change in ways that more mainstream tv shows never do because they have an established visual status quo they cant break out of. meanwhile rwby is always pushing itself to change and improve to the point of switching entire animation engines halfway through
Wow, you really binged this season :) Which makes sense, it's very much the intro before the show kicks into gear in V2. Port is a buffoon, but his speech gave me pause when I first heard it. Four kingdoms? In the entire world? The Grimm destroyed all the others? And then Ozpin went and said "more mistakes than any man, woman and child on this planet". Me: oh my god you broke the moon didn't you
Something I think it’s important to note about Weiss is that…her choice to go to Beacon suggests she does know on some level that she needs pushback. She knew living in a kingdom where her family owns the economy meant no one would’ve pushed back against her - on some level, she must’ve wanted to be challenged.
I wonder if the cheering in class thing isn’t also a difference in background - Yang and Ruby went to a combat school, so they’re likely used to having a peanut gallery and cheers when they fight. But Weiss was privately trained, so she’s not as used to having spectators.
One of the fun things is that there are tie-ins to episodes far, far in the future in this episode. Obviously, it often went the other way, they did callbacks; but they do a great job of tying the story together in a lot of little hooks all over the place.
Yeah - with this show you almost have to try to remember every scene, every line of dialogue, because there's probably a callback or a reference to it somewhere down the line. I have always considered it to be a masterclass of foreshadowing as a storytelling technique.
This episode shows one of my favorite writing styles of the show both sides have points and characters learn and progress its not all black and white there is Grey area where people tend to exist.
y'know i forgot Weiss left the room at the end; where is she going!? jokes aside, I do imagine she's going to put her weapon back in the lockers but it's sooooo late at night lol
She might also be going to use the bathroom to get ready for bed. If it was a dorm setup - and given something we see in Vol 2, it's possible that either it's one bathroom per team, or there's a shared floor bathroom. Plus we see later that Weiss has her own suitcase for Myrtenaster - maybe she prefers to keep it in her dorm. I don't think the students are necessarily required to use the lockers - Glynda said they were for extra gear and weapons.
Great chapters!!! We get to see the teams ease into campus life and getting to know one another......and themselves as well. I enjoyed your takes on everything, Lyle. Keep up the great work. 😎👍🏿🌹❄️🖤🔥
this is the episode that made a lot of people ship ruby and weiss. its not my favorite ship, but i do enjoy the concept and see where it comes from. they have a really cool dynamic where they balance each other out, which is great for any friendship, and a good friendship is always the foundation of a good romantic ship
I may be a bit late for those, but life was busy... But i can finally watch it. Comment will be increasing during watchingm so please bear with me if some things might not make sense at first XD 2:40 finally someone who actually reads the posters in the back! You're literally the FIRST one i've seen reading them. Well, guess i didn't have to namedrop the Grim we've encountered so far. Unfortunately this is the only time we see those if i remeber correctly. but i may be wrong there. 5:00 Yep. Just the same reaction as i had when seeing that first time XD 5:41 Boarbatuskm to answer that question. Yeah.. ouch is one word for the argument... Cream and 5 sugars... yikes. That's way too sweet even for my taste XD Even though i have to admit i take 2 sugars and cream. Yeah, the bunk beds are a bit... uhm... lets say "special" XD And yes, Port and Ozpin found exactly the right words for each respective listener. Both girls did indeed need a little push into the right direction. Can't wait to see the next one. oh. wait. that's already out since i'm 4 days late for this one XD welp, see you in the comment there XD
Of course Weiss does contradict herself by saying Ruby has done nothing to earn that leadership, yet her own not listening and letting her own peevishness distract her when Ruby was being a leader by providing direction against the Boombatusk.
9:17- That was the reason why Weiss was chastising Ruby after class as despite being chosen to lead Team RWBY, she wasn't taking the role seriously and instead treat it like a joke.

ruby struggling to not fidget in class but then really working hard to study at night is such an ADHD thing to do
I think it's also telling that Weiss doesn't respond to Blake or Yang cheering her on... but when Ruby cheers for her, she finds it distracting.
Don’t worry. The bunk beds only look unstable.
ruby: did you make a mistake?
ozpin: girl you tell me lol

Cream and five sugars? Want some coffee with that?
I've cut down to four......🤣
the burden that comes with leadership is a huge theme in this show, not just for the younger characters, but for ozpin himself.

osha would faint at this room setup
Osha wouldn't look, they'd be too busy writing up the many reports regarding yeeting kids off cliffs.

By the way you got to meet another character based upon a fairy tale.
Professor Peter Port... or, Peter and the Beo(wulf).
think of professor ports class as defense the dark arts

13:14 East? I thought you said Weiss 😂
This applies to all of us
Thanks for continuing to react to this!! I hope you keep going after Vol 1 is over.
8:21 Keep that quote in mind for future volumes.

Weiss did actually follow Ruby's advice, however resentfully.
Health and Safety? You think the people who fling students off of cliffs care about Health and Safety?
Lol, no but it's the health and safety manager in me that can't help it.

biggest mysteries in rwby: where did blake get a team rwby flag made on such short notice
Ask Mr. Shopkeeper.......😂
i headcanon she just drew on some fabric that was formerly the curtain.
