I've been a professional auto tech for over 30 years and you all should listen to this fine young man, he knows what he's talking about and very skilled. You know when he makes it look easy, he's a Cracker Jack mechanic! Hats off, well done!
Don't remove the hub nut. Pull the hub with the drive shaft attached by removing 3 hub bolts. Leave the 3 hub bolts out about a 1/2 inch, start the truck and turn the steering left and right. The bolts will hit the frame and pop the hub out. The power of hydraulics. Your welcome.
Who else here has watched the entire Game of Thrones series and all 3 Lord of the Rings movies, and all 3 The Hobbit movies? And among those of who can say yes to that question: who else has a 2nd gen Ram and has watched more Lenny than they have all of the above? I hope they're giving this guy stock options. His chipper demeanor and wholesome shop language makes watching these videos a hoot. Bonk bonk, friends. Bonk bonk. I see no reason these videos shouldn't be used to help install stuff on my vehicle, so let's begin.
When installing the new ball joints, start with the top and you can flip the press so the threaded shaft runs down through lower ball joint hole, saves alot of time/aggravation and you dont need to jerry rig the cups/spacers or need a second person to get it set up.
Instead of using an air hammer to get the wheel bearing out, do like you did with the bolt except get a deep socket and pin it against the back of the axle itself and use the powersteering to pop it out. Works every time.
I have a fairly similar air chisel that I use for the same type of things, and a tip I have would be not to hold it so that you are pushing on the part without using the chisel... Give it a little more space and it seems to hit a lot harder. Not sure why, may have to do with the internal geometry or how far it can throw the hammer(Basically giving it a longer stroke so it can get more energy in each hit).
I wish mine would've came out that easy on my 3/4 ton 😂 took me 5 hours altogether to get both of my hub assemblies off last summer. After going back and forth with a sledge, torch, air hammer, trying to use the power steering a couple times which didn't work.
Can old ball joints make a knocking noise while driving on a smooth road? It’s a knock on rotation of the tire not from the engine, I was thinking ball joints or a wheel bearing assembly. Either way, great video, thank you!
The upper ball joint is meant to move up and down by design. So saying 'thats wasted' while moving it up and down will confuse some people when all the brand new ball joints they keep ordering keep moving up and down.
Superb video and helpful , question please : are Dodge b vans of the same years similar suspension design? there are not many tuition videos of DODGE B vans Front Ball Joints 94-02 , thank you..
+KO251 Thanks for checking us out! Yes, our video studio is based out of Massachusetts, plenty of salt wreaking havoc on our poor vehicles but we make due. 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
So i just installed my ball joints, and when my knuck goes back on there is still up and downward play. The ball joints are sitting on correctly but i notice the pin on the top ball joint goes up and down is that safe?
My 98 had left handed threads on the driver side. My problem was the oil seal on the passenger side can you make a video on how to replace that seal that it won’t leak.
Thank you for this super informative video. I love that you have all parts and tools that you used available for me to purchase. How much did you charge or this job?
The cotter pin and castle nut on my tie rod end are fused together to where I can grab the pin to remove it and the nut lookes partially stripped, any tips on how to remove them would be greatly appreciated. I need to change my ball joints and that is stopping me from removing the assembly
He never showed the passenger side but yes it would help so the sleeve doesn’t fall out. I forgot on one truck and didn’t ad mine fell but was able to use a long all thread and roll it back into the fork and tried 4wd before fully assembling everything and it worked.
Okay , the second one has to be quicker than the first one. My old Dodge is almost 20 years old and that lower ball joint was not giving up without a fight. What's the average amount of time it should take for each ball joint on my 2003 Dodge Ram?
I didn’t disconnect the axle from the wheel bearing. Just pull both out. As for using a pneumatic hammer. No need, just place the socket over the wheel bearing mounting bolts and lightly tap.
So I drive a 98 Dodge Ram SLT 5.2 L... anyways the alignment shop said these ball joints won’t work, and that I need ADJUSTABLE ball joints. however I’ve already installed them.... So question is, how do you adjust caster and camber on these rams without ADJUSTABLE ball joints....?
+Richard Shaffer Our steering and suspension components are pre-greased and sealed for long life and do not require the extra maintenance typically required by greasable versions. Thanks for watching!
This is where I will start! I love your videos you do great work, specially for you taking time to explain in great detail on the how too A+, But man! when you put that rusty ass backing plate back on, I'am sorry that made me cringe. Come on! You guys are 1A Auto! you should have shown how to make the old rusty one work for the cheap folks, then put on the new part to make the install cohesive with the rest of the install and sell some backing plates that wont rust off do to snow or mud or any situation that might make that rusty ass backing plate fail! Just saying. Its like getting a 10,000 dollar paint job then putting back on the old rust bumpers! backing plates are there for a reason and not cosmetics.
what can it be? every time im driving the steering wheel feels like the driver tire it's bouncing i figured it out the only way to make it calm down its by reducing the speed.
+POoCH We wouldn't be able to diagnose an issue like that here, you may want to have a local mechanic take a look at it. Thanks for checking us out! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
I used the tool and the tool blew thru the top of the lower ball joint 😂😂😂had to put a socket. In between the tool and ball joint and it pushed it out 😂🤣😂
You should never install knurled ball joints unless the smooth ball joints were loose in the inner Cs. Once you installed knurled ball joints you can never go back to the smooth ones. There was no point in installing the knurled ball joints in this case.

Well to be honest I’m pretty sure he is pretty good and informative on his videos and def learn about that dodge

mitchell cook I was going to do that but sadly my brothers ball joints were so bad everything was shook loose by the time It got to me haha
Latex gloves aren’t really hand protection brother😬😂
Best part about older trucks, every swing of a hammer comes with weight reduction. 12:50

Gosh if only there was a website I could buy all these parts and tools from.
Very nice video. I will use it to change my ball joints 2001 Ram 1500 4x4.
I need this guy around while I rebuild my 95' 5.9L!! No cap!!!
Would it be the same for a rear 2 wheel drive?
I wish mine would've came out that easy on my 3/4 ton 😂 took me 5 hours altogether to get both of my hub assemblies off last summer. After going back and forth with a sledge, torch, air hammer, trying to use the power steering a couple times which didn't work.
Book time is 3.3 so 4 hours. That’s not a bad time man

What about the clip for the ball joint?
The upper ball joint is meant to move up and down by design. So saying 'thats wasted' while moving it up and down will confuse some people when all the brand new ball joints they keep ordering keep moving up and down.

What is the correct torque spec for these ball joints really need to know thanks 🙏
So no need to torque down lower and upper ball joints to the knuckle?
well done video ty, what air gun are you using, what kind of ball baring tool did you buy how many adaptors came with it, is a 21 set ok
Thank you for this super informative video. I love that you have all parts and tools that you used available for me to purchase. How much did you charge or this job?

Where can I buy a good ball joint press ? Thanks
I might have missed it, but on the 4x4 trucks, is it best to put the truck in 4wd before you pull the axle?
He never showed the passenger side but yes it would help so the sleeve doesn’t fall out. I forgot on one truck and didn’t ad mine fell but was able to use a long all thread and roll it back into the fork and tried 4wd before fully assembling everything and it worked.
what size air compressor ddo you use? and what size air hose?
is a nice video and it help a lot but i can't tie the nut on the lower because it spin could you tell me what i can do? thanks
Okay , the second one has to be quicker than the first one. My old Dodge is almost 20 years old and that lower ball joint was not giving up without a fight. What's the average amount of time it should take for each ball joint on my 2003 Dodge Ram?
Idk if I can do it but I'm going to give it a try 😂
Is this for the two wheel drive model or
four wheel drive model?🤔
4wd
Won’t the gap in the backing plate allow dirt and moisture in?
Torqued the tie rod. Shouldn’t there be a torque setting for the ball joints?
Nice thank you
I didn’t disconnect the axle from the wheel bearing. Just pull both out. As for using a pneumatic hammer. No need, just place the socket over the wheel bearing mounting bolts and lightly tap.
+Airmanmx1 We appreciate the feedback. Sometimes there are multiple ways to accomplish the same repair.
I bought the ball joints with the brackets on it from 1aAuto, how much different are those to install?
+Miguel Alvarez The installation of the parts should be similar to the video we have.
Will Over tightening the axle nut seize the bearing?
+B E Overtightening will damage the bearing and cause premature failure. Thanks for checking us out! 1AAuto.com
May as well have the shop do it. It would cost just as much after buying all the tools necessary
Show me a video of how to take off the seal on your steering box my steering box is leaking power steering fluid
It's supposed to have a telescopic ball joint... That why you have that Play
is the process any different for a 2WD truck instead of 4WD
+Jacob W. It should have many similarities. Thanks for checking us out!
Make sure the balljoints you have match the exact year and model. Video is good in regards to removal and installation.
Do you have a how-to for the 2WD Ram of this vintage?
+ceejay313 We do not have a video for this repair right now, but we'll keep this request in mind for a future video! 1aau.to/m/Shop-1AAuto-c
Have a 97 dodge ram 1500 4x4 i replace all the brakes and now I have a vibration in the front where I'm unable drive
Good video
I’ve never heard vehicle annunciated with an R
Thanks!
I did not remove the bun that way ... I put a thick bolt that pushed itself up with its same nut
Yall wanna use my truck as a demo I'm from texas I dont have a problem paying just like to see videos from yall.
My Hub bolts are actually 14mm, using a 9/16 and an air wrench cold stirp the bolt head !
How much is the price
Outstanding
unnecessary to have to cut the stud off of the ball joint in order to drive it out. Nice way to plug a tool that you have for sale though
Are upper and lower ball joints greaseable?
+Richard Shaffer Our steering and suspension components are pre-greased and sealed for long life and do not require the extra maintenance typically required by greasable versions. Thanks for watching!
+William Ginter We do have a selection of MOOG suspension components for certain vehicle. 1aauto.com

what can it be?

What’s the point in wasting time cutting the stud on the ball joint? I’ve never had to do that on my Ram! Lmao
I think to allow the compressor to push up without bending the nut. Also so he can wack the bottom. But yeah I don't get it either.
Two-wheel drive not four wheel drive please show me how easy
Hand protection😂
Knurled ball joints are an mistake
and i thought my truck was rusty..... jeez
Wrong way to cotter pin a castle nut
+ryan0714 Thanks for the tip!
This made me laugh though, best comment imo... ahaha ohhhh smh
