I think it's important to not label your music as a hobby just because it currently does not earn an income that will sustain you. Labeling things in a way that potentially diminishes their potential can subconsciously limit you. Better just to make music and work on making it better and richer each and every time.
I have been procrastinating on 2 aspects of music making I that have always hated: shooting videos and promoting myself. Hate it, hate it, hate it. But it's time to leave my comfort zone in the last decade and move forward. So... ... Graham and fellow Grahamites: hold me accountable! I don't know or even care what the content will be, but I WILL release my first promotional music video on Monday. Thank you, Graham for the last little kick in the pants I needed. Let's do this.
Hi my name is Raul 🙋...and I'm a procrastinator 😞 but this is a new year and I will make my first complete song by Feb 30th...😄 ok, the 15th...never done this before, nervous but I can do it 💪.. Thanks for this video!
2019 was a good year for my music. Graham helped me get started and in 6 months I wrote, recorded and released one EP and two singles and recorded a handful of covers for TH-cam. It's cool to look back and see the improvement in each song/video. So, next 4 track EP coming out 1st April 2020....promise! EDIT: Mission accomplished ahead of schedule. Just uploaded EP to TH-cam. Let me know what you think!
I spent 2019 mostly with practicing my singing abilities. I was feeling that I hadn't been ready and that my songs wouldn't be good because I needed to 'learn' more and get better and better in singing. Now I'm kind of confident enough to finally finish projects with vocals so I can finally publish songs! :)
I am almost 40. I also have, almost 500 demo songs that i have been writing the last 25 years but never released, not even finished, a single one of them..! Your video gave me a good reason and a proper form of artistic working ethics to start doing something at last! Thank you
Tip #3 is the main one I need to put into practice; I consume so much, but it keeps me from actually making anything. I've actually been unsubscribing from a lot of TH-cam channels and email lists lately, so I'm really looking forward to spending more of my time in the studio. Thanks for the advice, hope you have a great 2020!
2019 was the year i stopped hiding my passion for creating music & started sharing my creations on sound cloud. One year on & ive shared 25 or more songs & finally got round to releasing on the major platforms a few days ago. The one point that im going to take on board is redeeming wasted time. Im still a newb so youtube & instagram are my go to for tips & guidance. Im more than ready for 2020
We must remember that "we love to make a song, it's the funniest thing in the world. it's the reason why we're making music". don't be afraid to make a bad song. try to find what's the problem and make prevention. you have 3 choice. 1. making what you like. you should think about others. "who" is the listener? students? girls? workers? lovers? "when" and "where"? in the shower? on drive? 2. making what others like. you should think about your style and musical desire(or ideal). "why" people should listen your music? 3. making what we like. go on. good luck!
I had to stop the video at 7:04, went to the other room and wrote a song! Somebody had to say this, no more procrastination!!!!!!!!!!!! :D Thank you for the inspiration! Will I be able to release the song on February 2? :))) I will try!
Usually 4 - 5 days a week I just pick out 2 hour blocks and work on music for those 2 hours, then after that take an hour break, then do 2 more hours, and after that I call it a day usually. Or I'll do vocal practice after that. Some days I will study music theory, music production or music history on TH-cam, or I will listen to some popular songs from any era and then look up the chords online.
Great tips Graham! Last year was a breakthrough year for me, thanks to you and other great mixing instructors on TH-cam. I bought an audio interface back in March 2018 with a goal of writing and recording a song. On March 4, 2019 I released 8 original songs, and later in 2019 released 2 singles and 2 music videos, all with the help of my lovely wife. Looking forward to a great and productive 2020!
Thank you Graham. Procrastination was my thing in 2019. However, you opened my eyes and now I have pulled up my socks. 2020 will have my own song and I am sure to follow your tips and tricks to end procrastination. Thank you
Thank you so much Graham. At the end of the year we finally released our album. It was all thanks to you. You have taught us a world of knowledge in the art of recording and mixing. Thank you ☺️
I made a bunch of songs in 2019, you can save your golf claps... unless you plan on doubling them up with some snare or maybe a limiter with some reverb and a stereo widener.
2020, I put out my first 6 song EP and I also did 2 collaborations with one singer and another producer and this year I did another collaboration. I've been watching Recordingrevolution for years and finally I did it. Now I do not feel stressed about putting out new music, I feel confident and calm when I work on my new songs. Making an EP is definitely the best advice
Challenged myself to try and write a song a month in 2019. Wrote 10 new songs over the course of the year. In 2020 I’m going to take my best 6 and record my first EP. Excited for another year of awesome music making!
Great tips! I'm gonna try to clean up my writing process this year. I have to separate writing, recording, and mixing steps better, I try to do everything at once. I end up with a near fully produced 15 second section, and nothing else and then burn out.
Graham, with all due respect for your previous videos and your whole channel (which I like very much), this is probably your best video ever. I could see your real concern about people creating new stuff and bringing nice things to the world. Thank you.
Consumer of Things. I think you just coined a new term, and you are damn correct when you say that. Excellent video! I am always excited about the first video of the year from you, as it is very inspiring. It is like you are waking up everyone who's been sleeping for the entire year. Best wishes for the new year to everyone! I hope we can create and put out the things we could not do last year. :)
Best thing I ever did was writing a lead sheet for each tune. Show how many bars intro, verse, chorus etc with melody and chords. Easy to jot down and invaluable as it forces you to make decisions then keeps you on track during recording, mixing etc. 1/2 an hour’s work that will save you hours in the long run.
Thank you!!! Last year was a good year in recording and releasing with my bands and I got a lot of songwriting complete for my solo album. I've recently been trying to work on completing at least 1hr per day towards working on finishing my solo album. Having a deadline and employing doing something everyday towards it has made it easier to see the end. Still learning to root out procrastination, but making progress. All that being said, having a deadline has been one of the most beneficial lessons I learned in 2019. Happy New Year!!
Thanks Graham. Last year I tried to release a song a month from writing to releasing but my computer crashed and I lost everything and then lost impetus. This year I will release my album. Wishing you the best for 2020.
Here's another great tip in relation to "Break it down": "Work Backward" to figure out the best flow for your project management. Or, as the late Stephen Covey says in The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, "Begin with the end in mind." Tip #3 is my weakness, lol!
In 2019 i started making a lot of music alone. By November I started find my sound. This 2020 after my degree I'll start making 1 song a week. Period. Good luck everyone with your productions. Wish everybody the best year of their lives ♥️
2:56 Tip #1: Set a deadline for your next musical release. 5:12 Tip #2: Break it down into small steps. 8:47 Tip #3: Redeem wasted time in your week. 12:14 Tip #4: Have an accountability partner.
I am gonna implement all tips to improve my music. There is not a less amount of desire in me is stoping me. Its a problem that we dont hav any deadline. A DREAM WITH A DEADLINE IS GOAL.
So true! Overwhelm leads to procrastination. It is good to think big picture, but not at the expense of productivity. Just focus on 1 step at a time. Thank you for the insight and encouragement!
Thanks Graham for the reminder to keep busy doing productive items and not just vegging out all day, I have alot of songs started but not finished, I need to learn how to stay focused and get to the finish line. This could be the year.
Just having a month to create a song is a brilliant tip. I'm raring to go but currently have a blocked ear & have to wait till 7th to get it sorted by doctors which is annoying but whilst I wait, I'm getting other things sorted so I can just concentrate on music from the 7th. Also been writing song lyrics so still doing things towards music. I will definitely implement these tips & thank you for your tips. Happy New Year to you :)
Already decided I'm gonna release at leat 12 songs in 2020. I completed 53 songs last year and released 6. I think this isn't enough b'cos of the amount I chose to release means I need to make that much just to be "happy" with something. This year I'll make more sketches and set time limits and I'll spend less time completing music I won't release but more time on the best ideas I have. It will never be "enough" but I'm consistently creating b'cos it's what a producer does. Happy new Saturday Graham.
I made and recorded a simple rap song in 3 days in time for my birthday because I made the steps outlined in this video. Determination, deadline (my birthday, since I made the song about my birthday) and telling people "can't hang out, I'm busy because I'm working on something, look at your FB feed later". It worked! I wanted to work on it more, but I got it released! The last song I released was 6 years ago.
Really great video! Thank you so much for all you do Graham. Happy 2020! This was the year (2019) I started finishing projects and learning to mix and master. My ear sucks, but it gets better every day and I owe a lot of it to you.
Graham I've accepted you as my mentor. I'm enrolled in Mixing University and the quality of my recordings have brought in very talented artists. Thank you for all you have provided.
Thanks for the vid, Graham. Especially liked your comments at the end since I’m a hobbyist with other more important priorities - family, kids, and career. Tough to keep music going and there are weeks I don’t even pick up a guitar. Go through phases of wanting to sell everything and give it up completely, but I’ve played for 30 years. Trying to keep the small flame lit! Sounds like you get it. Thanks for the motivation.
The thing that discourages me sometimes is that I don’t have a budget to promote my music. I don’t want to create music and not have a video, money to get it in front of people. Maybe I just gotta do it and let whatever happens just happen.
I found your channel last night and I love it. I’ve always wanted to create my own music but had no idea how to start. Thank you for these videos because I am feeling more motivated now :)
You rock, Graham! Thanks for the motivation, I loved it when you gave the challenge to produce at least as much as we consume, if not more. I definitely want to cut back on the time I waste on the internet, so thanks for sharing that!
Yes! This video was so extremely inspiring and really spoke to me! Not even in just the music production way, but in doing anything. Because we all have several hobbies and I think this applies to many things not just music production. Definitely subscribed. Definitely excited to try to start producing music and to apply some of these points to my everyday life!
Graham! Happy New Year!! Another great video. I feel like I MADE all the music I wanted to make last year, I just don't feel like all the people I wanted to hear it did. So this year I'll DEFINITELY be getting an accountability partner to keep me pushing the other things I need to get done. Thanks for the tips, keep up the great work! PS. I would love to hear your thoughts on how to get that music out there for those of us struggling with building a following on social media and all.
Dude, you don’t know how much I needed this, thank you so much man! I actually released my EP last year, but just as you said it wasn’t all I wanted, so this year I’m going for more. Thank you so very much, for all your videos, all you share, your guide and May you have an amazing happy 2020. I’m going to implement them all your tips.
Great video for where to get stuff organized!! Last year i started working on musical projects and your videos were a big part of answering the "where do I start" question. Thank you! Keep up the good work
Breaking it down into small chunks seems like a great idea! It resonated with me because I’m always terrified of the amount of some that I need to do to release an album... so I’ll seriously consider releasing singles instead because honestly that’s all I would realistically be able to do
I bought new monitors and worked for two weeks straight on a new studio setup to prep for the new year. ...and I got sick for the first time in a good five years. January, frickin, first 😑
I learned a lot in 2019 in music and started our cover band called Lighthouse, and i had 3 small music gigs like mix a song or record guitar tracks. I started to take vocal lessons and i feel i'm progressing at it. But sometimes i feel out of world where nothing happens, just like every one of us. My goal for 2020 for our band is to learn my favorite songs and play them in our uni and on the streets :D Mixing-wise, i'll see how it goes, i'll try to take all opportunities to mix songs.
I spent 2019 on vocal trainings and did a big progress. Also I worked to earn money for my new laptop and finally got it. This year I'm playing around with DAWs and doing projects at least demos of my own songs.
Took your advice to Finish an open Project ( easy to start but never complete) so just want you to know that it make me more satisfied that my Songs are completed. Thanks for you mentioning this in 2019🙏GA
I cant spell procast-a -something....but Im a headless chicken and I've suffered from procasta thingy forever. You mentioned in a vid last year to make a simple decision to set a deadline for a song. It didn't matter if it was 2 weeks or 2 months. Well I did just that. Picked a song Id written and set a date to have it recorded , mixed and up on Soundcloud. I overran the date but thats ok. I got it done and am now onto song 2. A very simple tip but a good one. Thanks Graham and have a safe and fantastic 2020. PS...not wasting all night looking at YT vids is something I also need to stop doing. Right..gotta get back to this track. Happy New Year all.
Thank you for the great tips! The part about breaking a task apart into small chunks is very helpful because it makes the task seem smaller and manageable. I will definitely be using this strategy.
i have made myself a plan for finishing and releasing music this year, i have set two deadlines for the 2 singles im releasing in the next few months and i will be releasing my full album in the second half of the year!
I like to listen to these while I work on art and videos. Can't really have it on in the background while I'm working a beat but ya, good motivation while you work.
I will implement step two (break down to steps) and step four (acc. Partner) and it will at least do half the Time I spent on social media to actually do stuff (step three) so that will make a difference already maybe even more than that but I cannot commit to a 1:1 ratio yet... start with small steps.
I'm a HUGE procrastinator. I consistently make up excuses for why I can't be in my studio. I think my biggest excuse is that I make myself feel guilty for the amount of time I'm in my studio, the less time I'm with my wife and kids. My kids are really young (6 & 2) and require more attention right now. I know my wife doesn't care but I make myself feel bad and I struggle to get over this hurdle.

Thanks Graham for the reminder to keep busy doing productive items and not just vegging out all day, I have alot of songs started but not finished, I need to learn how to stay focused and get to the finish line. This could be the year.
This is some great tips Gram! Thanks so much, I have been procrastinating for years now, will try to follow your guide. Happy new year!
That's a really good point!
I wish you all the best for 2020!
Let's make music!
I plan on watching the rest of this video sometime later this week.
Why hurry?
There are 4 weeks in a month to choose from.
Thanks i need to hear this. Appreciate you for sharing 🙏
You're a great speaker and I can tell you're passionate. Thank you for your work.
Thank you! Keep up the good work
This dude is laying it down. Love that thing about consumerism - Hit it hard for me
Breaking it down into small chunks seems like a great idea!
January, frickin, first 😑
Liam Cronin doing the same brother🤘🏻🤘🏻
Thank you Graham.. This has been my weakness in making music.. These steps will help out a lot 👍
Graham! You're a great guy! I just came here to say i'm grateful to have your channel to watch to. I'm so thankful! I make music today because of you!
My goal for 2020 for our band is to learn my favorite songs and play them in our uni and on the streets :D
Mixing-wise, i'll see how it goes, i'll try to take all opportunities to mix songs.
Thank you so much for this video. I'm new to making music and a new subscriber. I loved the setting dates and finding a person for support.
These are some great tips man! Ending procrastination is the first thing I'm gonna do tomorrow!
lol...
Breaking it down into small steps realllllly really helps
I’m gonna use my calendar the most this year, already been using it.🔥
A Very happy new year....
This video is gold. Thanks! I needed this.
NYE: I'm sad. I made so much music in 2010's .. and now the decade is over.
Today: I feel good. The D7 will be a great year.
A new decade starts at the 1 counter in a decimal system.
E.g.: The 80's started at the beginning of 1981 and ended at the end of 1990
I cant spell procast-a -something....but Im a headless chicken and I've suffered from procasta thingy forever.
Great video! I need to get myself going this year!
Thank you for the great tips! The part about breaking a task apart into small chunks is very helpful because it makes the task seem smaller and manageable. I will definitely be using this strategy.
You gave me a push forward thanks for the positive energy
Mr. G is always On Point, I've learned so much great guy, he always let's you know the Home Studio is very Powerful
Dang! Straight from the heart. Thanks Graham. I'll challenge myself to become a better producer this 2020. CHEERS
i have made myself a plan for finishing and releasing music this year, i have set two deadlines for the 2 singles im releasing in the next few months and i will be releasing my full album in the second half of the year!
Thank you graham. This video is very helpful. I just bought my new equipment for recording. I am real beginner. Your videos helped me a lot.
Thanks
I like to listen to these while I work on art and videos. Can't really have it on in the background while I'm working a beat but ya, good motivation while you work.
Happy 4 year anniversary to this
Thanks for the videos. Great guidance because I'm teaching music and record a bit too.
I will implement step two (break down to steps) and step four (acc. Partner) and it will at least do half the Time I spent on social media to actually do stuff (step three) so that will make a difference already maybe even more than that but I cannot commit to a 1:1 ratio yet... start with small steps.
Thanks man those are the kind of works I need now.
great to the point and motivational video! thanks
