  • Indian Infrastructure Crumbles after Rains: How do we Fix this? | Vantage with Palki Sharma
India's financial capital Mumbai was brought to its knees after heavy rains on Monday. Why does Mumbai drown in muddy water every single year? Delhi's airport roof collapsed a few weeks ago. Bihar is infamous for its falling bridges. How does India expect to become a superpower and attract foreign investment if it can't get basic infrastructure right?

Yes among a host of other reasons. Lived worked in Mumbai in 1969/74 waded in knee deep sewage/water on my way to work as some buses stopped. toilets in Mumbai were on paved roads with the edge of the pavement being used as a step up. Imagine how disgusting chose to live in the UK and have a phobia about toilets so do my sons who are of a mixed marriage. On holiday in B'luru, son complained someone had used a public urinal to defecate.

When China built the Great Wall, they already have quality control standards imposed - every brick made and fired, had to have the maker's stamp on it to guarantee its strength. The walls are tested with arrows and spears hurled at it and if a single brick cracked, the maker will have to answer for it. You can go to the Great Wall of China today and still see those bricks with the maker's stamp that guarantees its' integrity. If people from 2,000 years ago can do something like this so that their work remain standing today, why can we not do something even better and have our construction works remain standing 4,000 years from now? Do we not have pride in ourselves?

When I was in high school in one of the nations of East Africa all my high school teachers were Indian Nationals. This was 40 years ago. They were the best and over qualified teachers. I remember one of the teachers was my Geography teacher. I will never forget the topic in class he thought us and I enjoyed them until today. The topics were such as the Malthusian theory of population growth in China and India, floodings and infrastructures. I don’t have the intention here to discuss but he was comparing the 2 nations that have over a billion population each. He tried to explain in simple term how the Chinese tried their best control the flooding and systematic built infrastructures made China today great achievement in economic developments and has become the 2nd economic power next to the USA. With time it might surpasses USA. Hunger has become history in China and ofcourse the flooding control mechanism India could learn from China.
When it comes to India despite a lot of improvements and developments in the last 20 to 40, I am very disappointed about the infrastructures and poverty in India. Having over a billion population and what I see the infrastructures, poverty and housing issues in India are very cronic; sad to watch this is the role of Government and the government has to have a vision to change this once and for all stop meddling things inside the nation.
Under the current circumstances forget about India thinking becoming Super power at this particular time. This doesn't mean India won't be Super Power in the future if it has a vision that works not poltics. A nation of millions in poverty and poor infrastructures and housing is concerning. The great people of India have to do something unique to change the the situations. It is for the good of the people of Asia, Africa and South America. India can play a big role in the developing countries because we have similarities in so many ways beginning in the history of Colonialism.

Glad to see someone who is thinking beyond petty politics and religion. Here we had a Congress government which in the end gave a poor performance and was thrown out of power. At the same time, the new government which took over promised heaven and we still wonder where do we stand now? Sadly, the government is investing in resources which does not directly benefit the major section of the people. Even after ten years of this government's rule, there is hardly any changes in the grass root level. At the same time, expenditure of products and services has doubled. The profits and shares of the millionaires has increased many fold and new billionaires have risen and still going up.
The people who are the worst effected are the working class, who toil daily for their bread and butter, which is unfortunately the major section of society, does not have the time or opportunity to uplift themselves. The results of the last election reflect this disappointment
