In another interview, an anchor questioned director Chidambaram on his decision to include all the original 11 actors in the film. The anchor suggested he could have reduced the cast to just 5 or 6 characters. Chidambaram explained that since this is a real issue that happened, and all 11 guys are still together after all these years. He felt like each and every one is important, and that's why he planned to go with that. For me, it really worked, especially after learning about the real Manjummel boys ❤

Baradwaj Sir, the director had stated in an interview that the reason why he chose not to cut down the number of characters in the friends group was because he knew all the friends personally and when the film releases they would feel sad if they were not included in the film, considering that Chidambaram chose to include everyone even though he stated that it would be much easier filming 6 or 7 characters and even though they had many issues while filming all the 11 people in a single frame he was still firm on including everyone in the film.

@@mohammedsalah8611Even i had the same opinion after watching the movie that at least half the gang could be cut down. But later from his interviews and after knowing more about the real incedent i was convinced that it can be ignored, because avoiding a few characters would not give justice, or else the entire story should have been modified on a way it's more just a cinema than the real incedent itself. In that case there were more possibilities of adding new situations and making it more punchy but then it's not a tribute to them but just a movie inspired from that incedent. Now with what we see it's almost fully the real incedent that is portrayed and that makes its own cinnect with the people. Even the character played by chandu seems to hide some potential for a surprising impact towards the end but does nothing special, it was another piece I felt not satisfying but considering again it's the real character who got sort of stuck and did not even talk for weeks in real, that is justified
I would say as long as they have the intent of showing the real story, it's done perfectly, but there was a possibility of doing it just as a "movie inspired from this incedent", and then it could be something entirely different

The main reason this film emotionally connected with me is because it's based on a real story. After watching interviews with the real Manjummel boys, I loved how the director kept 95% of the original story intact. The police station incident and their behavior with the real boys, childhood and 11 guys all are true. So, why was there a need to cut any parts of the real story?

  • @shyamts7125

Chidambaram said in an interview that the cruelty of police showing in the film were much worse in the real incident. They beat them and took their money and left them with only sufficient money to reach home. Also in that journey back to home, they got in a road accident because of the driver and none of them were slept that night.

The boys were constantly talking from above with real-life Subhash after he fell, just to keep him awake during the rescue process. While then Subhash was replying with incidents that took place in their childhood. That's what metaphorically shown in the movie. Also Subhash is not aware of any of the things he said after rescue..

Irrespective of how people may take it, the Police station portions and the lack of help they got from the authorities is an integral part of the story. It is not merely inserted in just to show people in bad light, but to emphasize the trouble they boys had to go through to save their friend. This kind of attitude from the authorities can happen to any of us, from any town, any city. And the movie talks about the determination and fight as friends or well wishers that we have to put thru to save a dear one.

Because he analyses it logically like a proper film critique should be doing and not pander to popular sensibilities. He says the characters of the other friends were cinematically not etched well and I completely agree. Except for a few, none of the friends gets a significant character sketch. Weather it is real story or not that is an undeniable factor which I also felt. The film is hugely successful despite all of this and BR also acknowledges that aspect too. But it is by no means cinematically even close to perfect as many imply here.

    2. Dude wants to cut down the head count lol (bruh it's a real incident and these many people actually were there 😢)
    3. The OG boys returned to their native and kept quiet for months before it was found by the locals which then became a big news as no one ever survived the guna caves fall. Its not for cinematic value its actually what happened

And there are other things, they did not show in the movie like the police snatched their money. Nevertheless the scene shown in the movie, even though it was predictable got us engaged and I think that is what matters.

      1. Okay it happened for real. So call it a documentary then? If they are showing everything as it is without caring about entertainment.
Can’t right? They would have added or deleted scenes according to the story and entertainment.
So it is absolutely right for him to feel it is cliche.
      2. Yes again, it is a real life incident. I appreciate the director valuing the real friendship and casted 11 people. But honestly for a film, it was too much to digest. Could have cut to half and developed each characters well rather than 11 characters simply being there.
      3. Haha, again bro! WE GO TO THEATRE FOR THE CINEMATIC VALUE. I pay my money to get cinematic experience, visuals and dramatic story. If you are showing it as a real story, show it as it is and call it a documentary. I wouldn’t watch it in the theatres.

The very questions that BR raises in this review has already been addressed by the Director Chidambaram in many interviews. Those were valid constructive criticism. Personally i feel the film was as perfect it could get. Eventhough many scenes play to the gallery those were needed to celebrate that act of bravery by Kuttan even more. Overall a very good cinematic experience, something that even 200cr budget movies fail to give us these days.

Yes there were 11 guys, but his point is that because of the decision to include all of them, the film looses individual character building for all of them. As a result only some of them register.
Baddy's point is about the film as a whole, the director wanted to include all of the boys, but we can't deny that including the 11 boys sacrifices somethings from the film

The flaws you mentioned in the review are right. As of a director POV, he could cut the number of friends and remove unwanted dramatic sequences for the better results of the movie. But as it is an real life story,he tried to portray the same as he could, and he succeeded in it. If he avoided such things, he could make a marvellous piece of work. But he stayed to stick with the original. And it won't be loyal to claim this movie as based on real life story. If he portrayed it as a normal survival thriller... the flaws might be double more than the current one, and logically, it won't easily connect to the audience in the theatres.

Its based on a true story sir, the police scenes were reduced as the real manjummel boys had said that the movie only showed 10 to 20% of what the cops had actually done to them. How can you even think about cutting down the number of characters when it is a story about team work and friendship? Every single person in that friends group and the local tamil residents worked tirelessly in rescuing subash. It will defeat the purpose of the film if the characters were reduced. The cutaways to the larger rock formation and hills helped the story telling a lot. Showing the claustrophobia wasn't the main intention of the film. As the director Mahesh Narayanan said for his film Malayankunju, showing the constant claustrophobia distanced the audience from his film. Whereas Manjummel boys handled it perfectly by showing both equally, Subash's suffering and what the boys were going through inorder to save him. The end where the old lady comes and says to subash that you are like a god as he survived the cave where no one had survived before happened in real life and it was not added as gallery pleasing melodrama like you think. Sir you should have at least read or watched some videos about the incident before doing this review.

They said, After the incident, They were surpriced to see the Local woman compared him to God, Since he is the only one to came back from the trap of death to Life. It was some kind of belief for the local people there. It happened in real incident. And it is not the view point of the Writer or director, And no intention to endorse such a belief in any way. And remember, the Main hero in rescue is Siju David, and people didnt call him God, instead it was Subash who was called God by certain locals.. As I said The makers didn't endorse it in any way, but portrayed it as it is, to maintain the intensity of situation. This is not a Melodrama..

Do you know that when the original Manjummal boys returned to their hometown, they also met with an accident? However, these events were not included in the movie. In fact, only a fraction of the incidents faced by the original boys were portrayed. If all these events were included, the movie might have been perceived as overly dramatic.

Ok so i love Baddy & have been waiting for his take on Manjummel Boys. Many times i listen to his reviews not because i always agree to them but cos its a different & interesting point of view. But im a tad bit disappointed with this review cos he seems to have missed the fact that this is INDEED a true story. 11 members, survivor seen as God, police beating up the boys are part of the reality. I enjoyed the movie but i can understand if u say the characters arc could have been developed better but trashing a lot of the genuinity of the movie claiming these are added for drama is not something that i expected from the likes of BR.. Looks like Baddy dint want to review this movie but got forced to do so after the reception it got and then saw it the same day as Premalu ( he seems to be comparing a romcom with a survival drama, like ??). I smell Kjo all over the channel recently.. now makes me wonder if its anything else. Waiting for real BR -respect-worthy reviews!

I felt the movie was overhyped when I watched it in the theatre.. I’m glad it’s doing very well.. but I personally felt, it could’ve been better, I’m aware it’s based on true story, I’m not sure if it was the choice of actors or what, I thought it lacked soul. The film “Malooty” a survival story made decades ago came to mind and I remember it to this day, because of how well it was shot, I’m talking about the scenes where she was stuck in the well, it made me feel claustrophobic just seeing shamili stuck in there..
The only scene I liked from manjummel boys was when subhash suddenly slips and falls into the cave and the look on his friends faces and the utter shock at what just happened.. I felt it in my gut.

Vaathiyare, The apathy and the threatening nature of the cops was required for us to rrot for the character harder. They were trespassing a restricted area and got in troubel, so some people may not instantly root for them. an external force is definitely required. The original Manjummel boys have mentioned somewhere that the cops were much worse irl and the movie has a much toned down version.

it was not a melodrama for exiting tamil audience showing the victim as a god in the 3rd act, rather these were real incidence that had occurred as per the information shared by the group long before through several mediums and also the director himself. also, sharing directors words, this bit was what made the director wanted to make it a movie, the movie of a person who, an atheist turned into a god himself, which i think is interesting. not pushed too hard but showcased subtly.

The film depicts original incidents and characters. The incidents that happened to those friends on that day was dramatic and cinematic. If they have depicted the incidents as such you would have said it was over dramatic
One such incident is the survivor being considered a god by the local villagers and rituals they performed after seeing the survivor.
Another incident is the rain and the friends trying desperately to not let go water into the pit, these were real incident and looks dramatic for someone who watches and criticizes these scenes without even knowing what happened in real

I was expecting this mixed review from Baradwaj, and he delivered! Often noticed that he bring different strokes in his reviews, just to stay different (after all he need to stand out and make the review a blockbuster). But in this case it would have been nice if he had done a bit more research / study (or even watch some interviews) before giving out some lines which borderlines stupidity. For e.g., should have reduced the no. of friends who do the trip, the feet touching scenes towards the climax, or the extended closure after the rescue act. 10+1 was the original no. of friends who did the trip, and the other incidents were all what they experienced. Diluting that will make the movie totally pointless. As a seasoned movie journalist, I wish he had at least given some thoughts into the finer aspects of the movie, instead of dismissing those as melodrama. See you soon at the movies!

Absolutely honest review. I loved the movie, had a great time in the theatre, but apart from the scenes that do work, much of it was forced, and very targeted to make you feel a certain way than organically getting there. But no denying, the emotional high the movie leaves you with cannot be ignored.
P.S: for those saying BR can't stand when a Malayalam movie does well or hating on this review, do watch his reviews on premalu and bramayugam, and the interview with Rahul Sadasivan; you can't be further away from the truth. This movie is about a real incident, but it's still a feature film, not a documentary. So the priority is on getting the craft part right(which they brilliantly did with the art direction and music choices), than the facts.
