Interview with Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider of Kraftwerk for Triad Free-Form Radio programme on WXFM-FM, Chicago, 20th of April, 1975. Hosted by Saul Smaizys
Young Ralf Hutter's speaking voice is one of the most melodious ones I've ever heard. Seriously ear-candy. On a more serious note: these guys in their late 20s sound like shy teens, but their thoughts are quite mature, and this incongruity creates a fascinating effect. In their struggling for words you can hear the group honestly trying to fathom the essence of their method and inventing, in real time, the international language to describe their music and philosophy, painstakingly formulating many of the stock phrases they would later rattle off with an almost automatic fluency. That's why I feel this recording is almost historically important.
+sivoxestcanta You also have to bear in mind that they are speaking in a language which is not their own. So, while it's true that they generally struggled for words when they speak about what they do (this also happened in German to a certain degree), this is amplified by the fact that they are struggling for words in a language in which they do not yet feel 100% at home.
It is not their native language. So you would expect some shyness, so they may sound like shy teens , but that is what is lost in translation. That is a problem for not native speakers of languages , shyness can be exacerbated by the difference in language.
I usually listen to the Radio ( LBC London ) at night time, and it helps me fall asleep...I have stopped listening recently, because the current climate ( Coronavirus ) is making me so depressed....So instead I have been listening to this wonderful interview, with these two insightful geniuses....Indeed I listened to this only last night...Today,I have just heard that Florian passed away...I am numb....His work will inspire generations to come....A very sad day - Florian Schneider 1947 - 2020
around 5:30, Florian Schneider speaks of the German "guilt" after WW II in 1975, 30 years after the war ended. Almost 50 years later, the guilt remains - and is passed on from generation to generation. He stated in 1975, "why should we (be guilty)". Florian Schneider was a very interesting man and ahead of his time, and so was Kraftwerk. May he rest in peace.
Amazing how these guys had a vision for what their music would sound like and the visuals they wanted to employ in the future . Equally amazing is how they realized that vision. Saw them for first time in Vancouver in 1975 in a small venue that held 2000 people. Never saw anything like it before and I have been a fan ever since. AUSGEZEICHNET!
This interview is quite fantastic! I like when interviewer says: it is the first time we hear this type of experimental music here in the Chicago-region. This interview is also the first time ever, I hear Florian speek.
I can remember radio stations having interviews like this in 60 s and 70s, not so much now in Australia. There are a few community radio stations that have these live interviews, most are content to broadcast crap.
Interviewing these two geniuses must have been difficult. They were so different and future-minded. Love when Ralf is describing videos and the interviewer just isn't getting it because no one was thinking of such a concept at the time...except Ralf and Florian. LOL
I’m eight minutes in... I just hear it as a calm conversation, like a therapist getting to know a client. Or they’re all high...or just calm. I vote that they’re just calm.
I've listened to Planet Rock by Afrika BamBaataa since inception and always felt like there was something missing in its sonic story. In those days, albums told a story and it's obvious what I was missing was Kraftwerk! The producer for Planet Rock sampled many effects of T.E.E. and well, I hate I've missed out on their gems for all this time.
English or some other language? In any case, I don't think there are any available unless somebody transcribes them. I could do it, I think the sound is pretty clear, but an hour is no little time. So if somebody can provide me with subtitles, I'd be happy to upload them!
The sloppy interviewer unable to control the background noises in the first 1/3 of the interview is annoying; the ringing phone that no one answers and the laughing kids in the next room. No radio station would put that on the air, so it must have been cut from whatever the broadcast version of this interview was. Ralf and Florian are very tactful to ignore all of it and just keep answering the questions. Otherwise a fascinating if predictable dialogue, given all the mythology that eventually built up around Kraftwerk over the next 40 years.
Ralf's voice could make me melt! He has very soft, calm, cool but sweet voice. Typical of gentleman
Unintentional ASMR
Damn, i thought exactly the same. Then i looked in the comments: I'm not alone.

yeah, whatever
I think they spoke very good English. You can tell Ralph and Florian are intelligent people. Also they are candid and honest. Real Gentlemen
They were very handsome too. :)
It's impressive how well articulated they are in a foreign language. True geniuses.
Young Ralf Hütter's voice was so calming and sweet
It was during this interview that Ralf and Florian decided that the phone in their Kling Klang Studio would have a silent ring.

ourplanetdiaries heartbraking news. His legacy will live on

They are so soft spoken and thoughtful. This is the most in depth interview I have found of Kraftwerk. Very insightful.
1 years old and I
This is rare as fuck, thanks for upping!

What a gem! They got so much room to formulate, it's just like watching them think.
So soothing

"We are playing with 2 electronic percussionists".
@@vrat1978 why?
@@vrat1978 thanks for the answer!
When the DJ asks if Kraftwerk has ever thought of making computer music...
oh, believe me, that’s coming...
Ich finde Kraftwerk die Beste Band Allen Zeiten. Und Ralf Hütter finde ich sehr Attraktive Mann mit eine super Stimme und Hüpsche Mann.
me too, I've never heard Florian's speaking voice until this
Love the ‘crocodile word’ for speed limit...
i was 100 days old
Somebody needs to put some good frequencies over this interview. Its beautiful and it needs to be meditated.
This was super interesting, thank you for uploading! The energy level in this is so low, haha, great for falling asleep!

Wow!!! Deadly dudes x
Priceless gem! Thanks
Very interesting this

Wow! Great to hear them talk with someone who’s smart and doesn’t talk over
Would have finished earlier had I known the last half hour was silence ... Thanks though this was unique and great to listen to!
14:20 the telephone call :D
Seriously? *takes the call anyway lol geez it can't wait? The interviewer really seems to be reaching to understand. Space Rock? Jazz?
😂😂
That interview is really a great treasure! Thank you Petty Blue 🖤
They're good lads.
Brain is dancing
Both look unmistakably officer class material in this photo.
Officer Ralf Hütter and Florian.... So sexy
Anyone know what Florian and Ralf are saying in German at 1:02:00?
Florian asks "have we introduced the people with whom we play / perform? Ralf: "no but he hasn't asked" (small giggle)

Thank you 😊
These guys predicted CDs in 1975
oh my god this is the most awkward review ever... still, it's cool

To all the kids here: The strange ringing sound in the beginning was a phone call.....
😂😂
I'm 13 but I know this sound
Interesting
А у Флориана милый голос =3
Is Ralf Hutter chewing on a piece of gum? Sounds like it.
Probably a piece of veggie pizza.

FYI this is the raw unedited version recorded at a private residence. It was later edited and mixed with music for the broadcast.
It would be nice if I could hear this Interview. It is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOO low.
Just turn up your volume. I'm doing the same
