"We intend to walk through this world on our feet not on our knees." Such a powerful statement. We must chart our own path as a sovereign people, with no apologies. Away with the backra massa mentality.

If Jamaica had followed the path of self reliance, even though it would take tremendous sacrifices, we would be far better today. But no, we wanted everything in the western world and in particular America, so, today Jamaica is paying dearly. Foreign investors own Jamaica

The irony was my mother was a staunch Labourite; my father did not get involved in politics. However, looking back now I believe he would favor di party dat gave him his #FarmWorkCard. I also saw young men and women from my community that went to Cuba to trained to become carpenter etc. By the time I became a teenager I was a recipient of high quality medical care from Cuban doctors in Sav hospital outpatient;even at that young age- I remember how professional and friendly those Cuban doctors were- this was free service with magical- cream that healed my liver-spots within days. Thank you First Lady, Mrs. Manley Duncan. You remind me of my principal *Mrs.McGregor* also a PNP.

I agree Mike. Jamaica has been too dependent on outside forces. Singapore has faced hard times by themselves and did great. This is where Jamaica should have been. Lee Kwan Yee lived in Jamaica and studied the Policies of Micheal Manley and applied it back to British drained Singapore.

Yo...this made me so sad. I am very impressed with this docu series. Excellent work. Makes me sad though because the PNP is part of my DNA. My Dad got a scholarship from Norman Manley and studied in the US & Canada. I was born in Canada in 1969 and came home to Jamaica in 1972. I went to Jamaica House Basic School so yes, PNP is in my blood. My parents were true patriots who paid a price for embracing the Socialist ideologies. My Dad lost his job at UWI when Seaga won in the 1980s. My family fell apart. This documentary brings back the sadness. I now live in Canada after contributing to the growth of Jamaica myself. I truly hate it here. It bun mi seh mi lef mi good good yaad come a da place yah. I left in 2008 and it hurts so bad. I miss my home which is now a cesspool secondary to crime and continued inequality. Like, it feels so surreal to not be living in the best place on earth. I have traveled to Europe and Africa and trust me, Jamaica is prime vibes. Aagh😠

If only we listened to Michael Manley as a nation, we would be far better off but due to external forces and power hungry individuals within the country forming the opposition we are still trying to find our way and still have to be going back to those same ideologies Manley spoke of to this day.

  • @monicamartin6069

What I appreciated about Manley, he was straightforward with the Jamaican people. He did not regard nor treat the masses as ignorant & unable to understand economic policies and development ideas. He led by example, would back off his shirt, take a broom or shovel, lay blocks alongside the workers on Labour Day, as comfortably as he rubbed shoulders and had cocktail and dined with world leaders.

    Memories! Memories! Memories!
I came of age during this period.
Now I know the reason I am this way; Beverley the black strong woman who made us realize that we were beautiful. And, Manley who taught us to be independent and not to allow the outside world to use their goods to entrap us. In other words,” Eat what we grow and grow what we eat.”
Beverley, yours and Manley’s sacrifices were not wasted. Many generations have benefited from the ideology and many more will. Those who fought against same are now embracing.
I am grateful that I was able to access tertiary education and bought a house before I was thirty years old.
    Long live Joshua!!!!
    Long live live Beverley!!!!

Agree with you 100%. My husband and I benefited from that whole movement. Bought our first home at 22/20 respectively. It was a wonderful time in our lives that we never stop talking about. Mr Manley brought out the political consciousness in the young people and gave us Worker Participation which allowed us to have a say in our work place. We became more confident and motivated in everything we did. This caused us to develop such a love for our country. When others were running away we hunkered down and enjoyed Jamaica.
Beverly and Michael should know that they did not fail but woke up a nation of young people who were hungry for good, caring leadership. We were willing to do away with American imports if it meant our country would grow. I miss him even in my old age because I have never seen another leader who loved his people so much. He was a man before his time and many of us are just starting to see his vision for our country! I could go on about all the wonderful programs he started..still with us today. Our leaders today...such a shame.

Thank you for producing this excellent tapestry of Beverly Manley Duncan's incredible story. It was a thrill and affirming to grow up seeing this beautiful black woman wearing hear natural hair in a regal afro. Growing up in Westmoreland, a PNP bastion as the time, there was excitement whenever Michael Manley visited. I feel blessed that I met him at the Savanna-la-mar Court House when I was seven, shook his soft hands, and gazed into his eyes, totally mesmerized. His pure, unadulterated love for the Jamaican people was never in doubt. It saddens and angers me that the CIA destabilized our country and condemned innocent Jamaicans to lives filled with despair or early death.

Jamaica is in desperate need of a truth and reconciliation commission…
Aided and abetted by Jamaican nationals, the esteemed Michael Manley was admonished, castigated and marginalized, by the hegemon of that and this day, for having to audacity to function in a capacity commensurate with being a sovereign state.
“As long as this party (PNP) is in power, we intend to walk through the world on our feet and not on our knees.” - Michael Manley
Let’s see to it that history not only absolve Dr. Fidel Castro Ruiz, but also Michael Manley and all who struggled with him for a better Jamaica.
Yes, the sabotaged economy was made to scream, it did crash-in those days, the IMF functioned as a tool against countries like Jamaica.
By means of back channels, Mr. Seaga, actively sought to overthrow the governing administration of that day. Seaga dispatched his proxy and surrogate, Senator Ronald Irvine, to engage the British High Commissioner and the American Ambassador, with the hopes of currying support.
We’ve seen the declassified CIA cables, we all know that Mr. Seaga was the one who advance to need to not only crush the PNP, but to also crush Mr. Manley and in substance, Jamaica.
We are beyond grateful for the courageous and measured Beverly Manley-in my estimation, the woman who made Michael Manley!

I have been preaching that for years -- the need for a Truth and Reconciliation Ministry. Unfortunately, it would be too partisan; it would be truth, according to one's political ideology.

      @LalibelaNile_NileValleyDreams 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

@@agtucker8 There are ways to secure empirical facts. It is for posterity’s sake that this documentary was made; this and subsequent generations will demand changes or a return to jamaica-centric policies of the PNP administration of the 1970s.
This documentary, though useful as a nostalgic reference, is better served as an instrument that inspires our youths to connect with ideals of a man, et al, who sought to deliberately ascend with purpose, conviction and integrity.

The majority of the literature working class people supported Democratic Socialism while there was less support from the illiterates. I remember spending large parts of my days trying to enlighten
many on the virtues of Manley's policies .Even though I was only in my late teens I saw the need to play my role in the interest of nation building.

Beverly must herself be very disappointed at what they have done during their last 18 years of reign smh. This is a very good history lesson. I hope Jamaicans really listen and see how lack of education, media and outside influence can destabilize a country AND ONCE AND FOR ALL WE STOP THE TRIBALISM AND VOTE POLICY & NOT PARTY!!!

According to the Boston Globe two brothers from Jamaica died in Martha's Vineyard. These youths were #UTEC and #UWI graduates. The report stated they died from jumping off a bridge into water-body at 11pm. I think an investigation should be led by fellow Jamaicans so that the *narratives* can be told from our perspective. The way the report was published focused more on the *monetary essence* of Jamaicans working in Martha's Vineyard and there weren't much emphasis placed on trying to investigate the root-cause of these two young-Jamaican- men's life.
Please Adtelligent please send a team to investigate. I will donate$100USD to help with the cost.

At the end of the day, what matters most is economic development of a third world country. This two party political system has caused so many of us to lose sight of the goal.
Instead, the loss of our sovereignty and choice to align ourselves with countries such as America, has continued to keep us destabilized. These countries from the first world powers want to keep all third world countries in their place-at the bottom. We need a new movement with the spirit of Michael Manley's social democratic leadership to move forward with the type of independence we had intended to have during his time.

That is why our best PM Michael Manley wanted all Jamaicans educated, even the elderly who were not able to go to school in their days, so they could understand more of how the country run and the impact on them, even if it was just a little understanding it betta dan nutten. But dem mek Seaga, CIA and America trick dem.
