    Although the warden dropping a portal activation item would be cool, the devs are 100% clear they dont want players to Have to kill the warden for any important drops. I'd love for a warden head or a warden cape to drop though

      Baseless thought here, even if they don’t drop anything now, if the portal-like structure turns out to be as unique as it seems, perhaps something it provides access to could gather drops from the warden (like, it tears open the warden’s chest and gathers something from it, since the design being similar to the soul sand is kinda sus).
      Although, I doubt any potential item they might add later in development would actually do anything. It’d just be a cool collectible.

    Having the Swift Sneak Enchantment be on the leggings is indeed a fantastic idea. The chestplate and leggings feel kind of lacking in Enchantments compared to boots and helmets.

      This is likely not done as to prevent stacking speed bonuses from other enchantments. Can cause wacky results.

    It would be cool to see the sounds when you right click the warden in spectator mode

      someone actually asked about this in one of the ask mojang videos! and iirc, they said that it's a really cool idea and they'd love to do it, but it's more of an easter egg thing and would take a fair bit of work, that so it's not top priority and might be something they do later on

    One thing I haven't seen anyone mention - healing potions damage the warden so it is definitely an undead mob

    6:13 Actually based on testing, the warden can be summoned in any biome, but only with 0 sky light level (so either a roof or at night)

    Even if the "statue" is not a portal in 1.19, It allows Mojang to add a new dimension trough it in a later update if they ever want to. This way the lore and structure is already there for it.

    The hype around this update is huge tbf.
    This "portal" thing got me very interested. Even if it may not lead to another dimension, I'm pretty sure it's gonna do something extremely cool anyway.

It could wholly be something that can lead to mystery and speculation for some time to come and then like a “something’s been brewing down in the deep dark” kind of update. Have little lore hints to it all and then boom one day a major update is announced and it is then a portal.

      i want to feed this theory a bit because i hear nobody talking about it… the pillars with the waterlogged skulk and redstone lamps… what if when they are all on they open the portal. i have many ideas how this could be done but the water logged block and extra space in there is making me think 4 axilotils. also because the wardens “antlers” look like there things on their head.

      Oh, for sure! Mojang 100% knew that we were gonna wonder what that "portal" thing really is, and I feel like they intended for us to think it's a portal. I don't think they'd let us down now. SOMETHING is going to be done with that thing, and I think we can be completely certain about it! :D

      Yes, this update(1.19) seems very minor. Maybe they will add this portal as an actual portal with cool mechanics as a surprise. And they called that thing that looks suspiciously like the centerpiece a small statue of a portal. Also they said something special would be in the middle of the ancient city.

    I don't think the Warden would drop anything to activate a portal. That would give players an incentive to kill the Warden, and the devs have said plenty of times that they don't want to do that.

    I think the center structure is a portal that they’re putting in for the future. It doesn’t do anything now, but they’re giving themselves an option in case they decide to create a dimension. Its location and ambiguity also lets them decide at what point in the game you’d be able to find the stuff require to light it.

    I think the statue could be a portal between other ancient city statues, essentially enabling long-range, wireless teleportion.
    However, if that mechanic isn't in 1.19, I think it'll be a dimension portal.
    This is because I don't think they'd implement a new dimension into 1.19 as it's already got a decent amount of content and they still haven't updated the end yet.

      @@SilvyReacts They did not say (that I know of) that they would update it again. However, end cities game a good chunk ago, and well before the "1.13+" updates where they overhauled 1 "major thing" almost every update, starting small with oceans and working up to bigger things like "the nether" and "Caves", and the end is lacking the similar "style of overhaul" that all those and more have gotten so far in the recent updates

      Maybe. I just feel like the End already got it's update. That isn't to say more can't be done, but to be frank ... I like the way the end is.
      It's one of those types of place that I feel it being more empty adds way more to the atmosphere of the place than if you started filling it with different biomes and crap.
      Edit: I would like to point out, that I wouldn't mind if they did another update of the end. I am just saying that I don't think it actually needs it. And if they decided to do another, I would like for them to keep the empty feeling, kind of like the backrooms, but maybe add additional places to go like, maybe crashed ships, and destroyed end cities. Maybe add some sort of ore.
      I just wouldn't want a drastic change that would remove the empty feeling.

    I think another area that doesn't spawn hostile mobs other than the mushroom fields is pretty nice. It would be a challenge clearing out all the shriekers, but after that, the area can make for a great base. I also like the idea of using shriekers to spawn wardens that protect your base in a server.

    Instead of a portal to new dimension, it could be fast travel to other deep dark cities. Considering how much work is required to make a new dimension

      @@aidan6620 Eh, just assign the randomization some values and you’ll have a base layout to work with. The only time-consuming part would be making the decorations and setting the proper atmosphere, and other details like that.

      @@yojojo3000 It's much harder to add a dimension to the game than just creating a new generation. There have to be reasons to go to that dimension, such as new loot, structures, mobs etc that take ages to make.

      And if their intention was to add a new dimension from the beginning, then I’m sure that they’re already a fair chunk of the way into the design that they want

    The shriekers get "reset" when you die. After you died it takes again three times to summon the warden :D

    I think the portal theory makes sense since the actual deep dark biomes in game are quite small, and it mostly leads to just the cities

      Yeah, but mojang have said they won't make a new dimension until they have "gotten the first 3 dimensions to a good state" so I certainly doubt it

      I hope it's like the end. The main island is quite small, but when you enter the gateway the world gets massive. Hope it's the same for the deep dark.

    Here's my two cents on the 1.19 ancient city: It's intended to be a prison. Although there are no cells or iron bars like a jail would have, the frame of "reinforced" deepslate is holding back the actual boss of the ancient city. This is why the frame is "reinforced" and unmoving like bedrock. This is why the Warden is named accurately like a prison warden. And this is why we don't know what the Warden drops, yet, because we are supposed to use whatever it is the Warden gives us after it dies with the frame of reinforced deepslate and spawn in the new boss of the game.
    What this new boss is could still be literally anything, but considering the texture of Sculk compared to the texture of the End Portal (Not the End Portal Frame), the Sculk might be an Ender-related species. I don't mean the Endermen and the Sculk family are directly related, I just think they come from the same place: The End. The Sculk looking like the End Portal(and the sky in the End)could mean that the Sculk are supposed to keep the End separate from the Overworld. And if you refer to the Minecraft Dungeons lore, the "Heart of Ender" is a boss you fight after defeating the Arch-Illager, who before that point, kept the Heart of Ender at bay. This follows the similar trend of defeating the Warden and fighting an End-related boss.

    The warden is intended to be a chase sequence/failure mode for stealth, it doesn't really make a lot of sense to make fighting something that can two-three shot you through enchanted netherite armor (and is stated will have anti-cheese powers to prevent you from just pillaring up or digging a small hole) be the key to unlocking something as significant as another dimension, since that will lock out anyone attempting to fight the thing legitimately; as due to the slow regen of hearts, even using golden apples or enchanted golden apples won't be enough to outpace it's damage. If the blocks are, in fact, a portal, then it needs to be something the player either needs to bring into the ancient city or is otherwise made using something found in the city.

    Not a lot of people mentioned this, but the warden is classified as undead, it takes increased damage from smite and splash potions of healing. Killing the warden by hand without cheesing (not using explosions, dripstone or any other obscure environmental damage, also not using any cover such a 1x2 hole in the wall) in survival on hard difficulty seems to be best done with a smite 5 netherite sword (The DPS of the sword outweighs the benefits of using an axe), a turtle master potion, a normal golden apple and full protection 4 diamond/netherite armor. The warden seems kind of too easy for something that is not intended to be killed, rare items like notch apples and totems are not required to kill it even on hard difficulty, depending if mojang want the warden to be truly unkillable they might need to buff him.

      I guess 500 hp wouldn't be enough for the warden. Honestly that amount of hp is already approaching modded mobs levels of hp, so making it even higher seems really ridiculous, just to make it more difficult for the players trying hard to kill the warden.

    It would be awesome having another dimension. Something like The Dark Dimension. Darkness effect could be permanently on (slightly counteracted by night vision) Having the other skin variants as different hierarchy of wardens would be cool also. The ones in the overworld could be "Exiled Wardens" or something.

    Tango tested some of the spawn rules for the warden and it seems independent of biome and location in general and more on light level. Somewhere sub 12 (i think) should do.

      Light level of less than 12 seems sufficient, so even just adding a roof overhead can be enough.

      In the tests Tango did in a livestream, he was able to summon the warden at very high light levels, but only as long as it was night. So it's either light level based, just with a high threshold as you suggested, or it's based specifically on the sky light level, which is separate from the block light level. The second was my initial assumption, but I suppose both are equally valid, and I just need to do more testing on my own.

    It should really be that the shrieker number (the 3 times it needs to be summoned) resets after summoning the watcher. If it's a per block limit, the watcher will rarely be summoned.

    The wardens can be summoned in any biome, the requirements are a shrieker to spawn them and a light level of I think 12 and under. Tango did a lot of testing of this on his recent deep dark testing stream and he had the wardens spawning via the shriekers in a mooshroom biome, on half slabs, on glass and even on stacked up carpets. The only way the warden wouldn't spawn was if there was daylight levels of 13 or above. I'm not sure if torch generated light levels of 13+ can prevent the warden from spawning as well or if it has to be daylight.

    I think that the wall (the wither resistant block, shaped in a portal in the deep dark city) will be used as a portal for future updates, possibly for a harder boss. This would make sense if the deep dark cities were hard to find, possibly with the goat horn that would make a “shriek” or raid start sound in the direction the city is located. They could be as rare as strongholds, with better loot (due to warden being hard to kill). I think this would make a good addition to the game, adding a challenge for hardcore players. (I posted this comment before watching the whole video, I know Xisuma mentioned it)

    This also supports the Portal Theory: In RetroGamingNow's lore videos he established that 2 things are needed for interdimensional travel in minecraft: Hard blocks and heat. We have both here, the reinforced deepslate and the soul fires below.

    those Frame blocks are incredibly curious, they do have good potential with the novel use with their semi permanent nature but their formation is combined with their strange properties makes it really suspicious

    The ancient cities look absolutely amazing, I'm a sucker for terrain gen/structures but I just love that they're interested in adding these things. Always loved the surprise you get when you're exploring and you come across some ancient ruin, imagining what it was like originally and things.
    If I could make one suggestion it'd be a block found in the ancient cities which has some kind of rune engraved into it, but in some long-lost language, and perhaps if you place them in such a way as they make a word then something else happens.

    A water lagged sculk sensor is silent. This means you don't hear it as the redstone lanterns above light up. Now, why they would naturally generate this way is a bit confusing, but I think it implies that whatever previous civilization that made these structures actually fully understood how these sensors worked. Kinda like the redstone traps and piston puzzle in a jungle temple

    Maybe swift sneak can be for leggings, but there is also an alternate version of the enchantment called "Quiet step" or something that that decreases the range at which sculks can hear you while walking, that is for boots and is a little more difficult to obtain, being rarer and possibly requireing a different and more tricky method of getting to any chests that may contain them.

      I did try that. It seemed to be like any other mob. Even it’s digging down animation wasn’t that cool in spectator. The camera froze in the direction it was last facing and you could hear it digging below the camera, but the camera didn’t move with it. Once the animation was done, the warden despawned and I was no longer spectating it. It was just a free camera again like the basic spectator camera.

    I feel like Mojang are using a handful of ideas from Game theory - Ancient Civilizations, Wither-proof portal frames, etc.
    And my best guess is that an Ancient Civilization opened the portal which released skulk and wardens from another dimension. Though I'd assume they'd never add that dimension since that'd be too much.

    Does anyone have a theory on why there is Soul Sand and Soul Fire under the center "portal"? I find it very curious that we have Nether blocks in the Overworld and I'm wondering if this has any lore implications, is a hint as to what the "portal" may be used for, or is it purely aesthetic? I'm also wondering if this is a hint that Wardens don't like Soul Fire...
    And I don't think that the Warden is going to drop anything; not even XP. I think that the prize for finding an Ancient City is going to be the loot (more than just Swift Sneak) and whatever this "portal" has to offer, and that the Warden is just going to be part of the challenge. This would be consistent with what Mojang did with the Piglin Bastions and Piglin Brutes; give the player something worth looting and then make it a challenge to loot. Of course, the Warden is several steps up in challenge from the Bastion/Piglin Brute, so hopefully the loot/reward is commensurate with the challenge.
    I'm also wondering if the Goat Horn may have something to do with the "portal". I can only imagine that blowing the Goat Horn in an Ancient City is likely a really bad idea as you would probably activate every Sculk block around you and summon a dozen Wardens, but perhaps it is part of the key to unlocking it...

    In my opinion, Swift Sneak should be kept as a boot enchant, and Depth Strider should be moved to being a leggings enchant instead. All the other boot enchants make sense for why they're on the boots, but people move slower in water because its harder to move your legs underwater, it has nothing to do with your feet. It would make way more sense for an enchant that improves your movement speed underwater to be applied to leggings instead of boots because of this.

    I don't think it is a new dimension, for now... The developers once said that they would only add a new dimension when they were completely happy with the existing dimensions. Since they are still updating overworld biomes and there are lot's of rumors about an end uptade, I don't belive we're getting a new dimension now

    9:30 I think the purpose of the water logged sensors is so when you walk and light up the lamps they don't alert the warden and activate other things by accident? I haven't played around with them yet but if you can water log them to "mute" them but have them still work would be really cool!

    That frame is definitely a portal, you cannot convince me otherwise. It will just take a few updates before it gets used, but I think it makes perfect sense that they want to add another dimension to Minecraft. Either it's for the Aether dimension (maybe with a different name, but that same air/water/order theme) or more likely, it leads to where the shulkers come from. Which is probably a dark dimension.

    The sensors have watter in them cause watter makes them silent, so if you activate them you won't notice

    I think the portal is a teleporter.
    First of all, the Deep Dark has almost exclusively been utility features. XP storage and wireless redstone are features with many applications, and I think that's the theme here. Additionally, while it may be too early to tell, the fact that you can pick up and move the block despite it being a supposed portal block seems odd. A teleporter would need this property, however, in order to be useful

    Little correction: Shriekers can actually summon Wardens in any biome, as long as the light level is 11 or lower. In other words, if you are in multiplayer, yes, you can go up to your friend's house at night, put down a shrieker and a sensor and potentially make him not your friend anymore.

    Makes sense, i imagine that the mobs have instinct fear of the city, because anything that makes sound get clapped into oblivion by the warden and their rests are assimilated into sculk.

    You're right that there is a mod containing a dimension called the Deep Dark, and it's existed years before the vanilla Deep Dark was announced. It's called Extra Utilities. It's what I thought of as soon as I heard the announcement.

    Mojang added the ability to have custom dimensions via data pack during the deep dark development, Mojang rarely adds features the game doesn't use itself. That said, it could just be a new nether portal frame block, after all soul sand can be found in ancient cities

      Which would actually be a rather intelligent thing to do. Imagine you are Mojang, and you're working on making a new dimension, but then alongside that you have to come up with a new "stronghold" for the portal room and all the Overworld portal stuff... Setting this up updates beforehand is smart thinking.

    People have made the Warden spawn via Shrieker in a shadowed area on the surface. I think all you had to do at 6:09 (when you said it only spawns in the Deep Dark) was put a shelter overhead.

    It does seem like there is something about those giant portal statue things that are important, without a doubt. I don't know if it will be a dimension, of if it is, i doubt it will be a very big, full or fleshed out dimension based on what Mojang has said in the past about making new dimensions, but to assume that the statue in the middle does nothing would be ridiculous, especially with those weird pillar blocks it seems to be made out of. There is something else to it for sure but what that is, we will have to wait and see, and while i would love for it to be some cool weird new place we can visit, i would not personally hold my hopes TOO high for it in that regard for the time being. We thought there would be more nether dimensions during the update, and they only added the basalt deltas after fans asked for one more biome, i doubt even with the amount of time this is being worked on that a theoretical deep dark dimension would be very expansive. I think at most we can expect something akin to the end, pre-exploration update. Just a giant, but still not very giant, room or island for us to maybe fight a boss or solve some puzzles in or something...

    I'm thinking the Deep Dark Portal Statue will be a portal that allows connection between other overworld Deep Dark Portals, for pocket-dimension travel between vast areas of your world. Like a 100:1 compression that lets you cover huge swaths of your world, almost similar to how the Warden can appear anywhere in the Deep Dark Caves biome.

    I think the Sculk Shrieker is incrementing a value on the player, when it => 3 it runs the code. However I think they forgot to set the number back to 1 when it reaches 3. This would explain why it rests when you rejoin as it's not actually saved to the world.

    I like to think that the big statue portal used to be functional but the parts required to keep it running are now missing or broken, and the warden/skulk blocks are from that other dimension that the player does not have access to. Idk if they will add any functionality to that portal statue in the future, but my bets are that it will not act as a portal once its officially released.

    Maybe the portal leads to a skulk dimension where everything is skulk, and the skulk is a fungus that travels through dimensions to consume them, and that's why it can infest nether blocks too, because we may find traces of it in the nether.

    Well, it may mean small PORTAL statue, as a smal statue of the portal in the center. And the similarity to the Warden can just be a stylisation of it by prior inhabitants.

    My personal theory around the portal is that mojang said there would be special loot in the cities, but all the loot is kinda lack luster.
    So, if you open the portal it will lead you to a small treasure room "dimension" to collect your reward, however, great risk great reward, because like the end portal, it will make an enormous amount of noise when opened, and instantly summon the warden (who will be incapable of following you into the dimension) so you will have to be extra careful when leaving

    You should all consider that the definition of Portal according to the Oxford dictionary is:
    _"a doorway, gate, or other entrance, especially a large and imposing one."_
    That's right, it may just be a glorified big decorative door, which is a very Minecraft thing to do.

    This is another reason why when you die you only drop ~7 levels. If you stayed in a farm and stockpiled >100 levels then when you die by the skulk, it would spread significantly.

    Tango did some testing of the warden on stream and it can be summoned in other biomes but it needs to be dark enough.

    It would be really cool if they added a new dimension. It would also help explain why the devs took especially long in adding the Deep Dark and related stuff. Also, it took the devs a pretty long time just to add a structure. (Yes, it's big but it didn't take them nearly as long to add say the bastion remnants.) If it's a new dimension, it could also explain why so many 1.17-18 features were pushed off. Adding a new dimension is no easy thing, especially if they added a bunch of new blocks, mobs, and vegetation. It would be REALLY cool if they added a new dimension, especially a Deep Dark one, but it doesn't seem quite right or very likely. For instance, the devs have been very quiet about all this except for the very close attention to detail and community about the deep dark features. But, in game play aspects it doesn't make much sense. Will there be a new final boss after the dragon? We don't need anything more to go to the end... What's the use?
    TLDR I hope they do and there is some evidence and structure to the theory that it IS a portal, but it doesn't seem likely. :( (But then again, they haven't added a new dimension in recent years.)

    I think it should be a portal between deep dark cities, for overworld travel. Youd have to unlock each one as you found it and only travel amongst already opened portals

    I think the shrieker being world bound is a good thing, but there should be a global (or distance) reset
    So that you can’t just sprint up to them and break them before they set off the third time

    I think that skulk catalysts should be able to spawn skill catalysts if it is far enough away because right now they are unable to be duplicated like the skulk, skulk shrieker, skulk and skulk sensor.

    my theory about the portals is that they'll take you up to the surface to provide an easy escape from the warden once you're done looting. If not the surface maybe the nearest space where the warden cant easily get to you.

    I think it would be cool if the deep dark portals lead to another deep dark city, and it could be used for travelling quicker. You should probably have to obtain something that might not be so common to actually activate it.

    Warden can be summoned in any biome though, it requires a lower then 15 light level. It even summons in mushroom islands

    I love that the devs seek out suggestions and seem to listen. It explains why Minecraft has been successful for over a decade. Too many game developers seem like they couldn't care less about player feedback.
